A .308 165gr Speer Nitrex Grand Slam bullet/cartridge accidently loaded and fired in a 25-06 rifle on a recent hunt in Namibia.

The two pictures below show all that was left of the 25-06 rifle.

I can see the action is a Mauser...

notice the remains of the scope!!!

I sure hope the shooter is okay... but the pictures don't make his prognosis look so hot...

Sorry, but that is a pretty dumb thing to do...

This wasn't another Dick homer Cheney incident was it???

According to the shooter it was a single shot RSA action. Unknown to me, but still.

The shooter came off very lightly in this accident as you can see in the next picture.
However, his whole face turned dark blue after a day or so.

Be careful what you load, especially if you keep your eyes on the game being hunted like in this case happened to the hunter and an unexpected .308 round ended up in the chamber.

That's why some of us old guys carefully lay out our ammo at night and load the proper cartridges into our cartridge pouches when we have time to think. It's never the time to mix ammo when you are on a serious hunt, and most of us have seen the accidents over and over in our lives. This hunter is a very lucky man!!!

Just have to ask, how is it someone tried to put 308 in a 25-06? They look nothing alike. bewildered Glad the shooter survived that one.

How the hell did he get this to chamber? You'd think a .308 should be fat enough to not quite fit in a 25-06 chamber(?).

At any rate, oops, ouch, and I'm glad no one was seriously hurt. This event demonstrates why you always pay attention when firearms are involved!

Gentlemen,
Several months ago someone was posting pictures of a .308 Win that apparently was fired in a .25-06. According to that account, the only thing that happened was that the bullet was swagged down to .25 cal. This would tell a different story, and probably a more accurate one. Glad the shooter made it. Good reminder to keep the ammo straight!

The action was a Musgrave RSA single shot and the scope was a Zeiss 8x56. He was watching the herd and fished into his jacket pocket for a round, loading it without looking down. He used the same jacket the previous day, when he was out with a 308 rifle and one round made it into the next day's hunt with the 25-06.

A good friend used to shoot 308 ammo in his 03 Springfield all day long when he didn't have any 06 ammo.

This spring, I shot a 260 rem round through a 25-284 custom. The 700 action and barrel handled it Ok, it was scary and it required a weighted mallet to open the bolt.

I cleaned it all up, shot it with a 25kg bag of sand under and over the action and all is OK. The first group I shot without the sandbag measured .70.

That was my first thought too.

But then I thought about it again and realized that this was a .308 Winchester round in a 25/06 rifle.

The chamber of the 25/06 rifle is long enough to accept the 25/06 round, which measures 2.185 inches (55.5 mm) from the base of the cartridge to the base of the cartridge neck. The .308 cartridge measures 1.710 inches (43.43 mm) from the base of the cartridge to the base of the cartridge neck.

The diameter of the cartridge base of the .308 and the 25/06 are exactly the same, .473 inch (12.01 mm). But the .308 is a short cartridge, while the 25/06 is a long one (30/06 length). So although the .308 bullet and case neck would certainly not fit into a 25 caliber chamber (for example, a .308 round would not chamber in a .25/08, or a .243 or 7mm/08, for that matter) the .308 cartridge is short enough that the bullet and cartridge neck would fit into the long 25/06 chamber without coming into contact with the tighter .25 caliber portion of the 25/06 chamber.

But, when fired, the powder gasses would try to force a .308 bullet down a .25 caliber barrel, and that won't work, so the pressure would become so high that it would (often anyway, if not always) destroy the rifle.

Two years ago I had a customer do the same exact thing. Difference being, the rifle was a Ruger M77. Action, barrel and bolt stayed intact. Hogue mono stock was destroyed. Extractor retaining ring was destroyed. Large peice of brass cartridge head was lodged along side of bolt, jamming the bolt release in the open position. I removed the barrel and was able to shake the brass peice out of the action and then remove the bolt. He sent the mess to Ruger with the truth about what happened. They sent him a new rifle. Free! I have had many occasions to think about this event and am still amazed that the shooter was extremely fortunate to have had only minor speckling of brass in his mustache. The action and bolt, other than the extractor ring, looked to be reusable. (I wouldn't) The Shilen barrel looked perfect although we both thought it best to discard it. I was really impressed with the strength of tha CAST Ruger action as well as their excellent customer service.

guys this is a real danger the 308 fits into a 2506 or 270 perfectly and the body taper acts as false headspace this is not the first time this has happened.

I had a guy I worked for do the same sighting in customers rifle blew his ass out in the floor he looked like the guy in the picture the bullet was just sticking out the end of the freshly destroyed sako bbl.
