Perfect Scout Rifle?

Hello!

Let´s not discuss the merits or non - merits of a Scout rifle, please!

My perfect Scout rifle would be:

CRF ( Win 70, CZ 550, Ruger or the MOA guns, the MAUSER 98 ;-))

Stripper clip feefing possible

double row mag, perhaps detachable ( but still stripper clip chargable!! ), made from an already established mag "base" -M 14. SR 25. FAL, ... 5 rd mag should fit flush.

Open sights

Posssibility, to mount a scope. Now I think the scout scopes are just "Scout Jokes"!

But the possibility to mount a scope, well forward, detachable, with perhaps two rings before the scopes adjustments, and with BIUS, is, what I am looking for! ( QD Rings or A.R.M.S. or LaRue ... please see the Picatinny on the new Ruger Scout )

Easy to get some peeps for Weaver or Ruger bases, but how to scope those rifles then??? Both is needed: scope and iron sight posssibility!

Was not there a Company, who built Scout rifles on Win 70 CRF actions? ( Brockman??? )( please help me!!! )

THX, Hermann

Brockman makes scout rifles, as does Grizzly Custom

Brockman makes a Talley sight base that has a pop up aperture site in it

XS sights has a aperture that fits on a weaver base, as does NECG (New England Custom gun)

The FN sniper rifle is a Win 70 CRF with bottom metal that takes detachable mags, that would be a good action to use for your project.

Now for a scout rifle, I agree except for one point, that of the inability to rapidly reload the Savage 99. Now if you consider the Winchester Mod 88 with detachable magazines, that might work.

I have several...

My first one was a Remington 600 .308 with Leopold Detacho Mount and 60s vintage Redfield IER scope... Very light weight and well balanced...

Second was a Remington 700 Youth/synthetic .308. It has a B-Square Scout mount, Leupold IER scope, NECG peepsight on a Weaver base and also have a 3-9 Redfield Widefield with AccuTrack as a long range scope.

Last (at least for bolt guns) are a matched pair of Ruger stainless Frontier Rifles in .308 and .358... Leupold IER scopes, 1.5-5 Leupold scopes, NECG peepsights and Williams bases with XS white line posts....great hunting guns.

They are not perfect but they work....

Best scout rifle ever? Hands down; Steyr Scout Rifle, .308 w/ Leupold Scout Scope, built in bi-pod with box magazine ande spare magazine built into bottom of stock. If you haven't seen one or held one, take a look. I've sold a couple and customers love them.

About two years before Ruger brought out the Frontier I wrote them a letter describing almost the gun they brought out but they left out the following from my suggestions:

Their excellent banded front sight;
Their fold down rear sight like on the rib of a Ruger #1A;
Synthetic stock;
18.5" barrel

I like what they brought out but really miss the very strong banded front sight. Their new Gunsight Scout is interesting...but too tactical...it's also not stainless.

A Winchester model 1895.

If one was to do it, like, really smartly, one would fit better open sights, re-stock it in laminate, cut the barrel and mount a weaver rail for a red dot sight.
Kinda like this:

To make it take-down would perhaps be a little iver the top, wouldn't you agree?
I admit, it would be handy when traveling but still...

Fact is, stripper clips could be used if I was to re-mount the load "ears", but as the rims of the case tend to overlap in the wrong way, the mother of all jams occurs. Fortunately only on the shooting range when trying!

Sorry: 8,2x53R

Kinda hard to get the extraction reliable with rimless ammo as the gun was originally made for rimmed ammo, you see.

Would you perhaps sell me the "ears" for the stripper clip loading of 7,62 x 54R rounds???

Better: i would LOVE do own a decent Win 1895 in 7,62 Russian ...

Perfect scout rifle? Thats an easy one, Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.1 or 2 with an XS scout scope mount and either a synthetic camo stock as I have on my hunting Enfield right now or a laminate. Played with this idea for a while but haven't ever had one built for some reason.

Sorry, no... I have them on my other Winchester. You know, the one in 7,62x53R. Far as I know, no-one has ever made one in 7,62x54R. Big Grin

Look here for a 7,62. I think Erkki holds two, at least he had another not too long ago.
The 8,2mm seems to have the "ears" in place still. He would probably sell them separate, too.
Here are the contact details.

Actualy Lars, no one has ever manufactered from the factory an actual 7.62x53R Finnish, the 1895 Winchesters were all chambered for 7.62x54R Russian-unless Sako redid them as they did the Mosin rifles? By the way, thanks for the link! There are some nice, rare peices there. Staying on topic a Marlin 336 in .30-30 with XS sights would make a dandy scout rifle as well.
Cheers

I don´t want to nitpick, I know both Ammo names might be correct, but I stand by the designation I used:

OK, I give in.

I will not, however, start calling the round x54R. Smiler

The Finnish commercial ammunition manufacturer Lapua does not make a difference between the 53R and 54R, but produces cartridges that will function in weapons chambered for either one.

I have actually as far as I can remember ever seen an ammo box (let alone a gun) with x54R designation.

I realy wish I had kept my 7.62x54R ammunition when I sold all my Mosin's, or at least a few of the boxes then I could take pictures of them and post it and not just pull links off the net. That being said I see no reason for a Fin to start calling it by the Russian name, personaly I'm a fan of the cartridge and jealous of the sight you linked.
There are some amazing rifles there that we never see here in Canada, the only Mosin I have left is an old 91 in a Finnish stock that actualy has the acceptance marks of not only Russia and Finnland but at least one more. It also has an American made bolt body, just can't recall if it is Westinghouse or Remington-the barrel is still the original Izzy and looks realy nice on the inside but the rest of the rifle nothing matches so I haven't shot it.
Cheers

I have the best scout rifle. It's a Rem. 760, best running game rifle I have ever seen. A scout rifle in a bolt gun is too slow. It also made the 760 into a MOA gun. The scope is mounted on the barrel.... Tom

It never ceases to amaze me the number of serious Blaser shooters/Owners (I have six of them!) that also have at least one Scout rifle.

In my case, I had an early Scout on a Remington 600, Williams FoolProof rear sight and Brown stock, one of my closest friends still owns it, then a Steyr Scout that I sold off for more Blaser stuff and now a new Ruger Scout...go figure. Not to mention this "Practical Rifle" in Remington 6.8SPC.

As I posted in another post I have shot 3 Scout rifles from the Gun Site smithy and several "clones".

The Steyr Scout would be the best, IMHO.

But the Ruger appears to be worth a look.

I used my 9,3x62 scout during the 1999 hunting season when drive hunting. That's the year it was made and I wrote an article for a hunting magazine. With it, I shot 1 fox, 2 Roedeer and 1 hind (Red deer), all running. The combo worked very well indeed, but not better than my FN double 9,3x74R (fair weather) or my 9,3x62 Blaser R 93 (foul weather), which BTW are both much nicer to look at... I found the scout concept interesting but, having experienced it, I no longer think it constitutes a progress, as compared to a conventionally mounted "battue" scope.
