I've got a Steyr Scout in .308 it's kind of like the proverbial ugly girlfriend who's great in bed.

I took it to South Africa several years ago and got to hear all standard BS you hear about it every time it's taken out. That was until we all went on a Springbok cull and I was out shooting everyone by a wide margin at ranges that I had been informed by the unwashed would be impossible to make with that rifle.

The only place that a scout set up falls down IMO is when you REALLY need the magnification like when you are trying to pick out the correct buck back in the brush amongst several bucks and the light is low.

Otherwise I can out shoot most guys with their regular hunting rifles in most situations with the ugly little Steyr.

And a nice thing about the Steyr is that you can remove the Scout scope, and attach a regular scope when necessary.

I use a Blaser R 93 Tracker [19 3/4", 50cm barrel] in 308 and 375 H&H as my "Scout Rifle".
So they are really "Psuedo Scouts".

They both have 2 scopes and Doctor Optic red dots. I am cross eye dominate and can use the red dot with both eyes open but not a scout scope.

I do not have a detachable magazine, and thus no 10 round mags either, so my reloading is a little slower. Not a problem in hunting IMHO, but a Coopers vision for a Scout Rifle is one that could also double as a defensive rifle if necessary.

If I was not such of a Blaser Freek, I would have a Steyr Scout...

I have actually as far as I can remember ever seen an ammo box (let alone a gun) with x54R designation.

Anyone have the link to the gunsmith that makes those scout type rifles on the mauser 98? His had the wood still covering the barrel with a opening for the rear sight.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Each has his own version of what an ideal scout rifle is and what an acceptable scout rifle is.
For me, an ideal rifle would be one with both scope and irons, light weight, accurate cold shot, 30 cal or larger, good trigger and short barreled. I have thought about getting a dedicated " scout rifle " but own and shoot a Remington model 7 in 308, stainless - 20" bbl. in Remingtons plastic stock. It has had a trigger job and is glass bedded and shoots .5 ".
After shooting it for many years I am very reluctant to go to anything else. This rifle fits me and is my quickest rifle except for a DR I own ( about tied for speed on target ) I regularly outshoot target rifles to 300 yards from a rest. So I may have irons aded to this rifle and consider it my scout rifle. Its light weight makes it a pleasure to carry and it handles so well I am sure I would do no better with any other. Just food for thought !

The Remington Model 7's in 308 are great rifles.

I have shot several of them on paper to 600 yards and on steel to 800.

Since my eyes prefer a conventional scope, they also work as a "Scout Rifle" for me.

Yes , my eyes also prefer the conventional type scope and on this rifle I can make FAST hits in
a very accuate way so this is a scout rifle in my eyes.

Yes I agree. I have shot or seen shot about 20 Rem Mod 7's, in calibres from 223, 243, 6mm, 7mm/08, several 308,s and a 350 Rem Mag.
ALL of them have been VERY accurate.

Most have been shot to 300 yards, with several of the 308's to 600 yards.

How would you guys rate the Remington 600 as a scout rifle?

Obviously the scope is mounted wrong for a scout rifle

If I'm not mistaken, the 600 was the basis for Jeff Cooper's first scout rifle. tu2
