Has anyone seen the new Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle? It's uglier than some of the jacked up stuff coming out of Russia. And I thought those stainless synthetics with the boat paddle stock were ugly! This makes some of the Russian stuff downright beautiful. LWD

Interesting the reactions. When I saw it, I thought it looked very "functional". I don't think it is intended to be a beauty queen but more a police type application. I've never seen an AR15 that was attractive but they sure sell.

Ugly is as ugly does. I agree it ain't a beeutyful rifle, but I can see it being purchased for a youngster's first rifle and being loved. The adjustment to the recoil pad is an admirable trait in the vein of a youth rifle. .395 Family Member DRSS, po' boy member Political correctness is nothing but liberal enforced censorship

Ugly-yes, but I like it! Getting harder and harder to find factory guns with open sights. Matt FISH!! Enfield had a model like that used in the jungles of Burma. It was ugly too! Know I do see some real potential for a a quality sniper rifle here. Replace that carbine barrel with a #7 contour and reconfigure the stock and Ruger might have something worth buying. Captain Finlander

Yep, a lot of thought went into that. Put on a 16.5" barrel and add a 2.5" flash suppressor. I always thought that I drank Ruger Koolaid. I own and shoot more Rugers than any brand. Heck, I even could kind of like the boat paddles, and always wished I had bought a 256 Hawkeye. I just cannot like this rifle. The innovations that I like are the adjustable butt pad/length of pull and the idea of a clip fed 77, but the rest just lets me cold. Maybe there is a shooting sport where you can use a higher capacity magazine, short barreled 308? Maybe it has its uses and I'm sure they will sell some. I'm certainly not part of their target market. Bfly Work hard and be nice, you never have enough time or friends.

It's not going to win any beauty contests, but I'd like to mount an Aimpoint Comp M on one and slip out to the range with a couple hundred .308 rounds. I Wonder if they'll offer a smaller capacity magazine? I had a Remington 788 in .308 several years ago that had an awesome muzzle flash till I had a smith thread it and attach an M16A2 flash suppressor. It almost eliminated the blast and reduced recoil to around .243 levels as an unforeseen bonus. The brake on this Ruger might offer the same benefits.

I have to admit it looks like a dandy bush gun for spot and stalk in the willows and alder where I like to hunt, been using my Parker Hale No.4 Enfield since I was 13 but this rifle from a pure function standpoint I am not opposed to. The flash hider could go but I've seen the muzzle blast from the M44 Mosin so it may be a good thing if it works. Looks like a cross between the Frontier (which I think is a nice shooting rifle for medium distance) and the Rancher semi auto that ruger has had for a long time. I've never shot one of them but sure didn't like the peep sights on it. Both front and rear sights look like cheap knockoffs of the M1A. I'll bet 90% of the buyers will put a scout scope on it and then you're really no better off than using the standard Frontier.

About time someone put a box magazine with more than a four round capacity on a bolt rifle.

Not gonna get my $995.00. I don't think Bill would have made it so ugly. Now, un-scout it and give me a 24" barrel and the option of either a flush box magazine or an M-14 magazine. What are the screws that go through the stock for? (Fore and aft of the magazine.) A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

It's not pretty, but I like it. If they extended the scout rail all the way back to the rear sight, doing away with the proprietary rings altogether, I'd probably get one. I'd ditch the flashhider for a simple thread protector (saving a couple of inches), and have two scopes pre-sighted-in with QD rings, one a scout scope and the other a higher-magnification variable of traditional design. I'd keep the sights, and probably put a sleeve on the stock to hold a back-up magazine. Then I'd realize that it wasn't as good a utility rifle as my Steyr Scout, and promptly sell it. Sadly, I am familiar with this pattern of behaviour. John

Well, the Steyr won't win any beauty contests either but the 308 sure shoots well. I was suprised it did so well with a 16.5" barrel. Thats an outstanding rifle!

I like it too. Very much form follows function and about the ONLY alternative to an Enfield No4 in countries that don't allow self-loading rifles. Now, personally, I think it would have been better with a double stck magazine like an Enfield as I think that the one on it is too obtrusive for fast handling. I could see it very useful in parts of Australia that is for sure. And New Zealand too. But, to be honest, Parker Hale did it better, earlier, and cheaper with their Scout Rifle. And in 243 as well as 308! With both a ten and five round magazine option. Rifle isn't mine BTW I searched the image of the internet...so sorry it's a bit big! Sadly here in UK it had a limited application and Parker Hale pretty much went out of business some few years later.

I agree on both counts...not pretty, but an exceptional shooter. The barrel on mine is 18 or 19 inches...I didn't know it could be had with a shorter one. Steyr has had several variations. John

If you are interested in the concept please buy a Mauser FR8 for Guardia Civil in Spain. Much more history, also 308, Mauser system, peep sight and yes it is (at least in EU) easy to get for Ruhers ridiculous price tag.

I like it but wish it would have a bit longer barrel. I gave up buying good looking rifles long ago after away they get beat up. I'll have check with my ffl buddy and see what wholesale is haven't brought a gun at retail in 30 years. I have always thought that putting a flash hider on my scout rifles would be a good idea. With some good bullets it would make handy dandy brush gun.

How about going with a molded stock with a mag well that would take ak mags or m16 mags then you could have it in 7.62x39 or 223. would be even uglier yet but what neat rifle. Form follows funtion.

Anything that needs more than a five round magazine and a powerful cartridge with a POINTED bullet. I suppose it is basically the same functionality as a lever action 30-30 but with the capability of four more rounds and a ballistically better bullet. If I had a lot of cull work to do...say as in Australia...it'd make sense. Or if you were out seeking four legged "game" but anticipating dangerous two legged "game"! In Britain apart from practical rifle shooting of the quasi-military type I doubt it has a function...and certainly little that an Enfield couldn't do better (except ammunition availability).

Apparently this rifle uses a magazine made by Accuracy International. Brownell's and Midway sell both a five and ten round version. They're pricey at $65.00 each but a couple of five rounders would be good for hunting use.
