Rick,
No have not ordered one yet, but will do so next week!! Don't know just what availability is at this time, but will find out either Monday or Tuesday. I like the concept and find the Tikka T3 Tactical very handy and would imagine the Ruger to be just more of the same. Glad to know there are shorter, handier mags available and you and I both know a fellow who can make a thread protector or better flash hider if needed. Happy New Year to you and yours!!

Ruger must have one designer who is in charge of ugly...

And he worked overtime on that thing!

At least he didn't put a three corner barrel on it. Roll Eyes

"seen the new Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle?"

Well, it IS ugly.

It's NOT a sniper rifle, a common hunting rifle nor a wall hanger. It's a pure tactical rifle for field work and, for what it's designed for, it's really a beautiful bit of work. I'm sure the good Col. Cooper would approve and IF I were planning to spend a week at a Gunsight rifle school I would want one!

I tried some bolt action rifles with detachable magazines, and decided I didn't like that, and have none now. Same with a thumb hole stock - tried it and didn't like it. I did try a red dot scope once and kinda liked that.

I sure would like to have a rear sight like that shown on the rifle.

The Ruger laminate stocks are nice to use, so nothing wrong there.
That silly magazine must be there purely for the visual effect, as it's almost as long as a FAL magazine. A double stack 10 round would make far more sense in a "Scout" role, as that sticky out thing will be a PITA from low prone.
Mount an Eotech & it'll be good for anything out to 300yds & beyond.
As someone else said; pity there ain't a lefty version.

Well, I thing Ruger missed the point again. Seems like now that they're well on the road to making some of the ugliest semiauto pistols in the world, not they're gonna uglify their rifles as well.
I agree with Col. Cooper's idea of the scout concept but that Steyr was ugly enough to abort a lady crocodile. The one I did handle though felt awfully good.
As Cooper's original idea of a scout rifle had semi-serious connotations, I always wondered why he accepted the Steyr, which if I understand it, is not a controlled feed rifle.
I think I would have liked that Ruger Scout a lot more if they'd dump that large magazine and go with the 5 round stripper clips as used in the Mausers and Springfields. As the scope sits well forward and out of the way, I think it would serve just as well as the assault wannabe look of that magazine. Also, I would like to see at least an 18" barrel, with or without that flash hider. Even with an 18" barrel, that gun is gonna be loud as hell. My ears have been messed up from load noises for way too many years. I don't need another ultra loud rifle aggravating the situation.

The magazine is a bit much, though.
Just wish they'll chamber it in 450 Mar or 350 RM.

Never understood the removable mag concept on scouts as the mag can be lost or damaged easily, and that nullifies the "under any conditions" requirements of that type of rifle... now a charger guide and stripper clips ala Mauser make sense.

I'd do it with that stock, as the pull can be easily lengthened, a blind or hinged mag. I like the rail on the quarter rib, and the rear, easily swapped out peep sight.

20 inch barrel/no brake/no hider.

Compartment in the stock for an extra rear sight and a trifle or two.

I guess that if you took the Ruger Scout, put a black scope, a bipod and painted the stock black or camo, you would be "Tacticool".

Looks like a marketing thing to me.

Well, don't know what it is, but Ruger is to announce on Jan. 3rd at 2PM a firearm that everybody must own or at least that is what their e mail alert says. Now, could it be uglier than the just released MKII 77 tactical/practical rifle or could it catch the eye of those former "wannabees?" You Ruger lovers and haters need to tune in on 1/3/11 at 2PM and see just what this is all about. Could be a life altering experience.

I kind of like it, but then I have a lot of Rugers. Something like that might be handy for chasing deer and hogs here in the Itawamba County river bottoms. I'm not a big fan of flash suppressors on hunting rifles but based on my experience with a buddy's AR-10 carbine I'd say it might be a help. A 5-rd magazine would be plenty good enough for me. I want to try to get a closer look at one and hold it in my hands. If I don't spend too much money at DSC I may order one. If anyone wants to call me names, suit yourself! beer

I like it. Very functional, iron sights, 7lbs, controlled round feed. Seems like the classic description of a scout rifle. Looks like a good gun for hogs in the brush here in South Texas.

Will that be the new African 9.3x62 that everyone's been talking about since the distributors have updated their list of soon to be available Rugers?

They're not trying to push anything on you that you do not want. That's like saying they are trying to push left handed rifles on a right handed shooter, because they sell left handed rifles. There is a market for Cooper style scout rifles, and several have made factory offerings of such over the years. Ruger wanted a shot at it, and they sat down with those who are the big players of that market and designed one to meet certain goals for that market. It appears they exceeded all those goals and may have ended up with the best factory offering for this market to date.

I'd not take it as a personal insult to your personal taste in rifles, this scout is simply no different than offering a lefty, when very few people actually want a lefty.

GaryVA,
It could well be the 9.3x62 offering, but not sure that would justify the remark that everyone should own one?? I happen to have a built M98 in that caliber, like it a lot and works well, but am sure it ranks way down on the list of calibers sold throughout the year/nation.
As for the GS "scout" rifle just announced, I will know by tomorrow what availablity and market price is and do plan on purchasing one. I would have preferred a slightly longer barrel, but overall it does appear to have been well thought out. I do understand 5 rnd mags are already available and with the std. threads on the muzzle there are a lot of flash hiders/brakes that can be sourced easily.

I can appreciate all the features except the magazine. Bringing out a rifle for a standard cartridge that must use proprietary magazines does not make a lick of sense in this day and age. Too many surplus magazines already in circulation: M1A/M14, M110/SR25, FAL, etc.

They should have used M1A mags. They are available in 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 round. Something for everyone.

Yes it would have made more sense to have use m14 mags.

Now that they have the basic plat form. Let them bring it out in 338fed,358,win 260,7mm08,243 and others.

I've read that this rifle will use a magazine designed by Accuracy International and available from a couple vendors so it's not like you're stuck if Ruger abandons the rifle after a short period.

Where you used to see conversion kits to use M-14 magazines in bolt guns, I haven't seen one in a while and understand that there are issues in getting a bolt gun to function with any double stack magazine. I believe most detachable bolt rifle magazines feed from a single position.

I would still have rather seen a standard box magazine with a provision for stripper clips. Is anyone actually making stripper clips in this day and age? or would you be stuck scrounging the gun shows for some 1950-1960's stuff?

Rick,
Champion's Choice offered them sometime ago and may still offer them in both 223 and 308/'06 or .473 diameter case rim. Have a couple older Rem 700's with milled slot for stripper clips, front receiver relief cut and rear receiver bridge milled to insure clean extraction.

Yes, some years ago Moe's did a conversion on Rem700's to accept M14 magazines, but was not all that popular. There are 'smiths out there still doing that type of conversion I understand.
