What will be your next Medium bore rifle?

I am starting to look into getting an older classic in 35 Whelen. Haven't looked into brands yet though. Would like to eventually have a 7mm STW and a 35 Whelen

I am a bit of a medium bore addict, and would have to say that the 35 Whelen is my favorite. I highly recommend it.

I currently own a 350 rem mag, 35 whelen, 338 federal, 338 win mag, 7-08, 300 weatherby, 35 remington, and a 9.3x74R Chapuis double. Like I said earlier, I use the 35 Whelen the most, along with the 350 remy and the 338 win mag. I also dig my 9.3x74r. I'll be testing out the 338 federal on deer and hogs here in a couple of months.

My next medium bore will probably be either a 9.3x62, 9.3x64 brenneke, or a 358 norma mag. However, it may be a while, as I don't need any of them and I don't want any of them enough to cough up the cash. Big Grin

Am not much of a small bore fan. Have .223, 308, 30-06, 308 Norma Mag, 338 Win Mag, two 9,3x62s and 9,3x74R. I like what I have. I think I'll do a relatively light 338-06 next.

Right now its a toss-up between a .358 Win on a 1910 Mexican Mauser action or a 9.3X62 on an Interarms Mark X action. Will end up buildong both; but which to build first is the question.

I'm starting up a 280 AI, unless I get some negative feedback on a few feelers I put out.
I like the idea of a 35 Whelen too though.....and I don't have one of those either!

Good luck with your new project.

Man its a sickness ... the 375/08 is at the 'smith getting the barrel set back to tighten headspace ... and I so wanted to build a 35Whelen or 358STA ... but I'm personally back at the big bore end gathering components for a 458AR.
Cheers...

My next medium will be coming home shortly. It will be the first .308 i have ever owned.

I have always thought I wanted one but to me it is only "right" for either pre 64 feather weight or mod. 88/100

Finaly found a nice pre 64 Model 88 that I can afford ( almost) Can't wait to wring it out !

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I have a browning BLR in a 358 winchester. It used to be my primary deer gun, and I really do like the cal. However, I've found that the extra case capacity in the Whelen really does make it a more versatile round.

Con-

I'm interested in this 375/08. Is it a 375 in a 308 caseing? What kind of ballistics do you get with one? Don't mean to jack the thread, but it doesn't seem to me that you could get much performance shooting such a large bullet out of such a small case...

Right now the next guns on my list are all small bores: 204, 223, 22-250, 220 swift, 6mm, 6.5x55. After those are in my safe (when I get a safe) I plan on acquiring a 7x64, a 338 or 325, and a 375.

My favorite 'smith is currently re-barrelling my 300 Win Mag to 8mm Rem Mag.

I don't have any .338 or .358 bores....would like a 338 RUM and a 358 STA, but I've probably got enough thumpers for while....maybe a Win Mag and a Whelen instead?....

Cheers,
Canuck

Again, can't advocate enough for the 35 Whelen. thumb

I've also had a bit of interest in the 325 wsm, but I'm not particularly fond of wsm's, and I know that my 338 win mag will out perform it and handle bigger bullets. That said, a 325 wsm in a BLR would be a nifty little mountain rifle... perfect for goats, sheep, mule deer, and elk. Cool

I am looking seriously at a Blaser R-93 barrel in 6.5x55, but I am having trouble justifying it since I already have a couple of 270 wins.

I'm trying to talk myself into a 4X4 Mossberg in 30-06, but realistically all I ever need for size is my 270. I'm holding out for them to bring it out in 223. I know, a bunch of you think it's ugly. Roll Eyes

I've got my heart set on a Ruger #1 in 9.3x74r

Although....... I might consider a 338 win or a 340 wby if I came across one at a "I'd be stupid to turn this down" price. dancing

yeh, like that's gonna happen. Roll Eyes

Stephenwhite- What does that process involve, and what sort of ballistics do you get with a 358 STA? Thanks.

338-06 and I surely don't need it. I have several 30 cals, a Husky 8mm, 338 Win. Mag., a 35 Rem, 303 Brit. and 2 .375s. But I like it.

Well I think mine is going to be an 8x57 providing the sportered k98 action I have is worth useing. It was drilled and taped crooked and if I can redrill it for a one piece base I will build on it.

Lets see current medium bores calibers I own .277, 7mm, .308, .311, 8mm, .338, and .358. Not too many gaps left to fill guess I'll have to get a 9.3 someday. I figure my next purchase will be a .270 Win in a Classic Featherweight when they come back in June.

My next one is going to be a 9.3x62. I just finally got started and hope to have the action and bottom inletted by Feburary so I can have it barreled and sights installed while I recoup from some possible surgerys on the elbows. I don't really need this cartridge but I can't have all of them in .270win although it's always tempting. Smiler

maddenwh,
Yes its a 375cal on a 308Win case. I've only gotten the 225gr Hornady to 2350fps from a 22" barrel so far. Due to some compromises ... when built the rifle ended with headspace in excess of what is should be. So ... its back at the 'smith to lop the ports off and shorten the barrel to around 20", bring headspace back to spec for a 308Win based cartridge ... and then the experimenting can begin again. With excess headspace I had a horrid time with primers backing out and then flattening ... kind of made me a bit nervous. I'll get the 375/08 back up and running as a summer project whilst waiting for the 458AR to be built.
Cheers...

Con- I thought there might be some challenges with that set up. I hope you get it all worked out. I'll be interested to see what it'll do out of a 20 in. barrel. Might make a fine "brush" rifle. Sounds like it will be similar to the 358 winchester with a fatter bullet. The .358 win has long been one of my old favorites for deer. elk, and especially hog hunting. archer

I don't really need this cartridge, but ...

I love this. I had this discussion many times with one of my buddies when we go into MEN's stores and check all the gear out. We inavariably leave there with stuff that we could do with out (if we really try Wink), but it is rather nice to have. Then we quickly convince ourselves that we only live once and that an extra gadget won't hurt us, or this pair of gloves we should have bought ages ago (damn that one night was cold), or it is time to buy a new pair of hunting boots and give the old pair to the black trackers/guides on the farm, or we agree there and then that we should have this new Sure-Fire torch so we don't step on the puffadders.

I have two mid bores as works in progress.

The first a 35 Whelen in tang safety Ruger that I have had for several years. Now is its turn to get some work. First problem is that it has a very long chamber like 3.5 OAL with 250 gr partitions as well as close to that with 225 gr TSX and yes only a 3.4 max due to magazine.

Second is a Husky in 300WM that is at the gunsmith as we speak.

This will make eight among 30'06 to 35 W including (3) '06's, 300 H&H, 300 Wby, 300 WM, and 338-06. Guess I qualify as a mid bore nutcase! Oh, and a 7-08 and 280 Rem. Gave away the two 270's to sonsinlaws!

I guess a lot of people look at the ballistics and realize it is a practical cartridge for most of the places and ranges they hunt.

I know it's been a favorite of gunsavy hunters in PA for many many years.

I do not know anyone personally who owns a 35 Whelen. I just find it interesting because most people "remember it" instead of "own it". And since it didnt get very popular when it came out and never had a huge following I find that very convincing to get one Big Grin

Buglemintoday you are making a good choice. Theres just something about that round, its powerful and seems to be very accurate. I have one and hopefully I'll get to take my first bull elk with it in a few days. Don't let people tell you its a woods catridge either, mines pushing a 225 gr. TSX @ 2730fps and I stopped there because it was accurate. I haven't tried to push it any faster. Good luck

I just bought a Remington 700 CDL in 35 Whelen, I also have a Sako AV 300 win mag, a 308 kimber 84m, a 700 25-284 semi custom. I had always wanted a bigger bore, I'm not sure where it exactly fits in to my hunting needs but I'm having fun.
