I've got a pushfeed M70 in 458 that I keep thinking about converting to a 300 Win Mag.I'm thinking a 24" #5 Lilja or Pedersen barrel and either a Mcmillan or High Tech Specialties stock.

Funny thread to bring back to life. Took 10 years but the 7mm STW and 300 saum I talked about are in my safe now.

So have yall achieved your goals of your next rifle in the past 10 years? What is the next going to be?

I already have a 7mm 08 Kimber Montana, 280AI in Sako L61R and a Simson M98 100+ year old 9.3X62 with full rib and octagon to round barrel. I used to own 358 Win, 308, 7X64, 270 etc.

I would love to own a 350 Rigby DR Wink

I want an 8x68S. I particularly want a Weatherby Europa but would be happy with a Krico, Voere, Brno,or whatever else presented itself.

Talk about resurrecting the dead! But in the last few years I've slowly migrated from the fast .30's to the more sedate velocity wise medium medium bores.

I've had a .350 Rem mag for a while and I'm always amazed at how well it works. I have used it black bear hunting mostly and no bear has ever required more than one shot or traveled anywhere after being hit. A guide friend I sometimes hunt with always looks a little pained if I don't bring it along.

I bought a .338 win mag a few years back (my first) that I like a lot. I'm beginning to understand why so many like it so much. It's a very versatile caliber.

Last year I picked up a CZ 550 FS in 9.3x62 that as yet hasn't tasted blood but not for lack of trying. This week it's going to hopefully find a blacktail deer to devirginize it. Big Grin

That is funny. As I have got into reloading and looking at manuals, I have become very intrigued by a bullet of at least 160 grains, .600 BC, 290 SD, at 3,100-3,150 as the perfect plains game/all purpose rifle.

Low and behold the 7mm STW delivers with 168 grain Accubond. It is a little light on SD, but compares well with these metrics with 300s with 160,180,200 grain bullets. I do not want to get into the 7mm vs 308 debate as I see them doing the same thing, and no one has to agree. The Accubond has become my favorite bullet.

My next rifle may be a 7mm STW with 26 inch barrel (I like long barrels and long cartridges) on a control round feed model 70 or clone action. But there are hunts getting in the way. Let’s see how long it takes me.

I also have an infatuation with the 358STA, but the 375 Ruger got me through it.

That's my issue now. Selling a few rifles that I wanted but don't need so I can do a few guided hunts in 2019. Or put in for a few public land hunts.

You will enjoy the STW when one follows you home. Mine has been lightning on Texas animals so far with the 160gr Sierra Game King. Can't wait to chase Mule Deer with it in November.

I have no idea.

It depends on what interesting thing crosses my path. My last two rifles were a Ruger No. 1 in 270 Win (my first 270) and a Ruger No. 3 in 30-40 Krag (my first 30-40).

I have a 30/06. I killed my first whitail with it a doe, then my next three all bucks.

I have and taken game with 5.56x45, 7mm/08, 30/06, 270 Win, 375 Ruger, 405 Winchester, Modern 50cal Muzzleloader TC Encore, that Winchester branded Apex Muzzleloader (Spanish knock of of Omega), 357 mag, and 458 Lott.

Mostly whitails with feral pigs, one big Eurasian boar and two 120ish pound boar, two hands full of turkey, a Fallow Buck at 210 pounds, and one elk cow.

My bags are not as big as most here. However, I am convinced with the 5.56 not included within cartridge class there is a lot of overlap.

I have nothing but love for the 30/06. I own two of them. But when looking for just a step up in general purpose bolt action category my three year love affair with the 270 Win and reloading for it brought me like so many to the formula I gave you above.

This leaves the 416 Remington, 308 M1A, and 500 Nitro unbloodied in my current stable. Not including some handguns.

So many interesting cartridges, so many places animals left to hunt.

This month I picked up my first 7mm Rem Mag as well as my first .270 Winchester. I really like the .270.

I think the 7mm is going to go in the safe with one of my 308's as guns to let people borrow. Or for my nephews to hunt with.

I've never been fond of the .270 Winchester but I guess it was because it wasn't in the right rifle. I haven't even shot this gun yet and already want to keep it around for the long haul.

My .416RM may get the nod as a back-up elk rifle if I get bored. You can never have too many .30-06's. 10 may be a good number to be "close" to not needing any more.

As far as new stuff this year, I guess it would be Ruger Africans in 275 Rigby and 6.5x55.

Wayne at AHR is close to delivering my CZs in 9.3x66 & 6.5x55 with his #3 packages.

And tomorrow I take delivery on a Dakota Classic Deluxe in 338-06.

It’s been a good year I guess. Smiler

I have an action, suitable barrel blank and brass/dies for a 7mm Dakota I need to put together. Built one for a friend several years ago and it's quite the performer. On the other end of the spectrum I want to put together a small Rem Model Seven in 458 Socom with DBM for a light handy brush/hog rifle too.

I currently have 338 Win, 35 Rem, 35 Whelan, and 375 Win. The two 35's are favorites. Of interest to me would be 338-06, 9.3 x 62, and 358 Win.

Maybe another 30-06, after all, I only have 3 of them. Frowner

Actually I have a Whelen, love it. But I still want a 338-06. You gotta love the excellent 338 bullet options.

I think that I have quenched my thirst of cartridges from 7mm through 416.
Rifles in cartridges that I already have, perhaps a different story. I still have a few that I am having modifications done on.
As far as new rifles, maybe, a used 30-06.

I am going to get an MGM Machine barrel for my T/C Encore in .30-06. Probably 1 in 10" - 26" barrel.

I have so many over lapping rifles between .270-.300. My only excuse is you pick whether you want to use a light rifle, long range rifle, semi-auto, single shot...otherwise a lot of my .277-.30 caliber rifles are extremely close in velocity and energy. Just try not to think about it so I don't have to thin out the safe.

I don't sweat the overlap. If I like the cartridge, I may have more than one rifle in it.

As to overlap, in honesty a 223, 30-06, and 375 H&H with a 338 Winchester tossed-in would cover all my hunting.
But, I like various types of 7mm's, .308's, 8mm's, 338's, 375's, and 416's.
Many, many really have no meaningful performance differences in actual use.
Most times to me, the scope mounted on it makes more difference than cartridge.

I'm pretty well set for medium bores with several 30 calibers (30-30, 308, 30-40, 30-06 and 300H&H), a MS in 8x56, a 35 Whelen, a 9.3x57 and a 375 H&H. I have been ogling a lefty 8mm Remington Magnum, a MS 9.5x56 and a Savage 99 300. In reality I don't need any of the new ones but since when has reality ever come into play when it come to gun purchases.

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." For me, it’s the 358 Norma.

I own a 358 STA, but not a Norma.

I guess we always want what we don’t have...

my favorite newest rifle is my 6.5-06. It is on a Mauser 300L. Wayne York, Oregon Gunsmithing built it for me. I topped with a Leupold VX-6 , 2 x 12. I shoot 140 grain accubond. It is a sweet little tack driver. Performed flawlessly opening weekend of deer season, busting a buck at 350 yards.

Sounds like a wonderful rifle. I would like to have one made some day.

Congrats on your buck & your good shooting!
