Quite possibly a 7MM STW. Been looking at the "flat advantage" it has. I'm intrigued.

I am happy to say NOTHING!!!

I have about any bore that I may desire...

I am going to do some switch barrels on some of my favorite actions...
there are a few varmint rounds that I'd like to play with.. like the 17 Fireball, and the 20 BR.. but all in all.. I have about any round I'd ever want to use...

and switch barrels are going to allow me to actually thin out the gun cabinet a lot....

besides the few varmint rounds I'd like to play with... I'd like to rebarrel a rifle for a 30 Remington and a 25 Rem, and maybe a 35 Remington.. all switch barrels...

and I need to add a Savage 99 to my collection of classic rifles...

but beyond that, I am happy to say, I am set! banana

now the next joy I will get in firearms is passing them on to my son! which is a good place to be in!!!

I have a G33-40 action thats clean as can be and a .284 Lothar Walther barrel, I kinda was thinking about a 280 but lots of gab about the 280 ancestry and inability to be accurate..but I have never seen a LW barrel that wouldn't shoot great and I have used a ton of them...

But I have always had a 7x57 until recently, I have a ton of brass and loaded ammo for it, bullets by the thousands maybe, and it has served me well over the years..Maybe a long throated 7x57 for the 175 gr. Nosler would be to my liking...

358 Winchester. Trying to decide whether to buy a Ruger Hawkeye in this caliber or build one. I have a browning medallion in 308 that I picked up cheap for the purpose of rebarrelling to 358.

Dempsey, it is tempting though! Looks like a great project!

I'd put a Kimber Montana in .338Fed in the safe. I don't need it either as my .358Win does just fine. But I think that it would make a great all-around hunting tool, especialy for elk. BT

the 358 norma intrigues me. mabey the 375 ruger necked to .35 or .33... mabey to .416?? lots of good possibilities, i think if i were to look at a factory round it would be a .340 weatherby or a 338 ultra mag, downrange hammer like a 375 and the trajectory of a 7 mag, hard not to like that.

I plan on turning a 375R into a semi custom rifle based on a cartridge that seats a .366 (9.3) in a .375R (Ruger) case. I'll have to rebarrel the 375R, but should be a fun project with what I hope will be a good effecient cartridge. archer

A 358 Ruger (when the finally come to their senses and make one), If not a 358 STA… But I would rather not have a wildcat.

Other than that I'm pretty much married to my current rifles... Now a 458 Lott.....

I sold my last one with the intention of replacing it but the deal fell through on the replacement...

it (the replacement) was a Sako V in a Borden Rimrock Stock.

I currently don't have a bolt action larger than my .338 WinMag. I really have no need for a .416 or anything larger, so I've been contemplating a a .375 Ruger, or maybe even necking it down to 9.3mm. No, it won't do anything that a .375 won't do, but it's just something I have an itch for.

A funny thing followed me home from the store today. .30-40 Krag sporter with professional (not mailorder) classic american stock with squarish oval checkered forend, ebony grip cap, proper checkering. Bore was filthy but I figured as long as nobody had shot corrosive in it I'd take a chance. Looks like a mirror after 2 hours of scrubbing. All I planned to do was buy a can of Kroil but you know how these things go...

Must have been a grandpa's gun that somebody stuck in a closet and forgot. Sidemount weaver too.

Now we'll have to go see if it shoots.

UPDATE: It shoots bit over 2 MOA so far. Might get a Leopold. Bit of scrubbing done it some good. Be a nice alternative to the .30-30s.

My next medium bore will either be a Savage 99 in .308 (if I can find a decent one for a reasonable price) or a Model 700 XCR in .338 Win. That will probably be it for the medium bores for me...then it'll be onto the big guns... BOOM

Well I already have a Rem 700 stainless 338-06 with a 25 inch barrel.

I have been thinking about a 280 Ackley Improved on a Browning 1885 High Wall with a 28 inch barrel.

Thanks, I might have to give Hank a call and see what we can work out! I found one at a local store, it was kind of beat up, but for $450, I thought it might be a neat little project gun.

I'm having MG Arms in Texas build me either a 358 Win. or a 350 Rem. Mag. on a Rem. Model 600 Action. The rifle will weigh about 5 pounds without a scope. I plan to use it on a horse-back hunt for Moose in BC in the near future.

No speeches about recoil. I know it is going to kick like a mule, but I shoot a .458 Lott and .404 Jeffery off the bench quite often, and it can't be any worse than one of these.

I guess a lot of people look at the ballistics and realize it is a practical cartridge for most of the places and ranges they hunt.

I know it's been a favorite of gunsavy hunters in PA for many many years.

Really? I can't see what the appeal is!?! Relativly high ME for close ranges when compared to other '06 based cases. Is that it? enlighten me all you 35W fans.

If the 270 won't do it the .338 will, if the 338 won't I can't afford the hunt!

Ray - If you are hesitant about a .280 Remington chambering because of reported acuracy problems, please just put that "fret" behind you and go for it....

I know you are seasoned enough to know in your heart of hearts that EVERY bore and chambering has folks out there who have had bad experiences with them. As the old saying goes (sorta paraphrased) "Sunshine happens".

I have a .280 right now which I bought for $225 at one of our gun club's swap meets. It used to belong to a fella who was in the regular pitching rotation for the Houston Astros, He had a load for it which would regularly shoot 5-shot, 100-yard groups at around half an inch. He sold it cheap to a local body-shop owner, with whom he hunts a lot, when the accuracy started to drop off a bit. (They both graduated from High School here.)

Anyway it was at the club swap meet mainly for use as an action. Is built on a nice FN Mauser with what appears to be an electroless nickel-plated barrel (exterior only), and a hand shaped, inletted, checkered, and finished laminated-walnut sporter stock.

The body shop guy is a friend of mine also, and he said he was selling it because the throat in the barrel was well gone and it was now a 1.5-to-2.0 MOA shooter, at best.

So I bought it and took it home, planning to either get the barrel re-bored to something larger, or to just rebarrel it altogether.

But first I had to try it out, just to be sure. And to try it, I had to clean it. After a week of cleaning, I finally had all the copper out of the bore. Then, off to the range.

Well, the very first group was with Barnes-X 120 grainers, as I intended to see if it would work well enough for antelope if I didn't get it re-done in time for desert-goat season. That group and all the rest fired the first day at the range averaged right at half an inch for 5-shot groups!! The bore or throat weren't bad, they just hadn't been properly maintained!

I know that's just one rifle experience and a lucky one at that. but it serves to make the point that what we read or are told should often only be used to guide one's curiosity and experimentation when talking about rifle accuracy.

He would have reported that as a lousy 2 MOA rifle, while the first owner would say it HAD been a .5 MOA rifle for a while, and I would have to say that right now it IS a.6 MOA or better rifle. What's a guy to believe?

Bottom line...if you hanker for a .280, go for it. It will probably work out just fine for an experienced rifleman such as yourself.

Best wishes.....

The 35Whelen kind of bridges the gap nicely between standard vs magnum cases and big vs small bores. For me personally ... its also about my recoil limit where I can just pick up a rifle after an extended absence from shooting and shoot it well. With its available projectiles it also shoots flat enough for the average hunter and can bridge the gap between medium game and stuff you really shouldnt be tackling with a 35cal. Great all-rounder as is the 350RemMag, 9.3x62 and to some extent the 338WinMag.
Cheers...
