What do think about the 338 RUM? I really like mine. I plan on taking it to Africa and shooting a Zerba with it. I guess its just a great gun.

Any coments?

If you are serious, go for it if you shoot it well, me, I'd rather save my shoulder/teeth and/or ears if it has a brake on it.

Everyone has their own recoil 'threshold' mine is about at a 338-06, Magnums don't feel too comfortable, but that is just me, and I don't want to practice with them to 'get used to it' either. Rather just enjoy my other options, but again, if you are asking a serious question, if legal-not sure of laws, it will be very adequate as far as you can place your shot.

A good 225gr or 250gr bullet out of that 338 Rum is just about the best long range big game combo you can come up with. Recoil isn't that bad and a proper brake isn't noticably louder than unbreaked. People get some funny preconcieved notions in thier head about muzzle breaks, mainly from reading too much and experiencing too little. I had a great break on my 338 RUM, the ports angled out away from the shooter, while bigger it reduced felt recoil very well and was no louder to the shooter or anyone behind him than any unbreaked rifle.

Another side note, write this down.....

GUNS ARE LOUD!!!!

Half the time the same people who are complaining about muzzle brakes on rifles will think nothing of shooting big bore revolvers like 454, 500 S&W, 460 S&W, any of these will be loader than a braked rifle.

I also love mine. I have found it to be very versatile. I only have a few rifles. So, besides the factory rounds, I have had a small commercial loader (down)load some milder rounds to plink, 200 gr and 225 bullets @ 30-06 velocities (for those weight bullets), 225 gr bullets @ less than 338 Win mag velocites and "ouch", 300 gr bullets @ 2,700 (under the 2,750 max I read about). I guess you can do this with any caliber. Since the rifle only weighs 7.75 lbs, I do think I am going to have a "quiet" brake put on.

never heard a 'quiet' brake but I was always next to them, and they were LOUD, esp. the bigger mags. I am sure design, and being 'behind' the gun instead of beside it helps, just not my thing, but the ballistics of a large 338 are impressive for long shots.

Guns are loud, and I value the hearing I have left after much damage at a young age with my dad shooting trap, and no plugs!

I have tried the 7mm, 300 and 338 RUMs. The 338 was by far the most accurate overall.

I have just ordered a Gra-Coil Reducer for Rifles.........it fits in the butt end of the rifle and the this model has a maximum compression stroke of only 5/16ths of an inch. That should stop a scope going through your head. Big Grin

If it works it could be a great alternative to a muzzle break.......................................

With my 338 RUM I do have a brake on it for shooting on the bench but I take it off when I
use it for hunting and screw this thread protecter on to protect my threads.
on over the threads.

Here is a picture of the break. It has to be quite large to be effective, the ports are angled away from the shooter so the break has to be bigger than the barrel to get enough surface area for braking effect. This is a very effective system that isn't noticably louder than an unbraked 338 RUM. I have a buddy who has the three large wholes drilled in the side of his barrel, now that does make it quite a bit louder for people standing around. I think design is the biggest factor in percieved "loudness" and blast.

My reply has less to do with the 338 RUM and more to do with a braked rifle...

My 338-378 Weatherby has the factory Accubrake on it... The other day at the range I was chatting with the folks on the benches next to me (I did try to get a bench away from everybody but it was a busy day) and they said the noise wasn't all that bad.. Essentially the factory brake doesn't send the gases perpendicular to the barrel but somewhat forward so it does help out those next to you as well...

For the "quite brake" I have found the BP-Tec VA Comp to show all the signs of a well engineered product and intend to have one installed and "tuned" this spring.

For those that are interested you can find their brake on the web at www.bp-tec.com.. They have demo videos on the site that will give you a concept of how well they work..

Ken....

My 338 RUM was and is Awesome ... Man is it fast ........275 gr KBC @ 2800 fps...... I was haveing so much fun with a 375 I made up, that I sold the RUM... relly wish I hadn,t.......I finally decided that the factory 250 gr Swift ammo couldn,t be beat by me in reality............................It,s one of those , one rifle to do it all ,, Very Well!!!Were I to move up north.. It is the 2nd rifle I would have made up.........The 1st being a 358 STA............. A friend of mine on POW has one and wolves arn,t safe to 800 yrds....... He put a muzzel brake and a BIG scope on it. and knows the ranges where he hunts.... I hope you relly enjoy it ... The Holland quick discharge muzzel brake doesn,t have ports on the bottom and it wouldn,t blast dirt every where if you were shooting from prone position.........

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
