Budget is the constraint usually. You can buy a Winchester, Remington, Dakota, Kimber, Ruger,Sako, and others and get 1 MOA with slight tweeking and maybe out of the box. Depends on what you want to spend.

Great cartridge ! Its really anybodys guess witch rifle will be the most accurate. if you handload, you aught to be able to get any of them to shoot prety good. If you are wanting target grade accuracy, i would probably go with a sako. But if you are just wanting a good acurate huting rifle, i would just get the one that fits you best and just feels right when you shoulder it. A tweek here and the and most likly it will shoot for ya ...tj30,06 freedom1st

AAdams, You might want to add Tikka to your list of rifles to look at. I picked up a T3 hunter, wood stock/blue action-barrel, in 25-06 and was able to get under 1 1/2 at 200yrds without even trying to work up a load. If thier SS version holds to the same you should have a great shooter. Smedley PS This thing has the smoothest bolts I have come across. Well at least for a rifle under $1000. ______________________ Smedley ______________________ From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' I am pretty fond of Savage, but you might also look for a new old stock Tikka 695, They are both accurate out of the box. Lt. Robert J. Dole, 10th Mountain, Italy.

SPS Stainless, once you adjust the trigger it should be good to go. Sako would be my 2nd choice, but only if you want to spend alot more money. Jay

I second the SPS. My son's 06 SPS is a MOA rifle. All I did to it was adjust the trigger. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I bought a 700 sps in 06 in the late summer of last year. I never knew what to expect but boy have I been suprised and pleased with the results. It has been a 3/4" rifle consistantly with everything stuffed into it so far( except for win factory 150's) and with its preferred load it is a 1/2" rifle for 3 shots. Nice light rifle more than accurate enough for any hunting I will ever do. All that has been done to it is trigger adjustment. The price on this rifle was excellent which allowed me to be able to spend more money on leupold optics. Now if they could just make one in 25-06 with a 24-26" tube life would be sweet.

I'd buy a pre-64 model 70 and drop it into a McMillan stock... If you must go SS, and $ is no object, do as above, and have a Hart install a new 30-06 barrel...

I just got a remington mod. 700 xcr , have not shot it yet ,but expect good things , seeing my other remington's shoot well.

I really don't see the need to put a Hart or any other match barrel on a factory 30-06, most shoot under moa and occasionally under 1/2 moa at any distance one should shoot at game and would be a waste of money, IMHO. But, a good stock such as a Mcmillan, H-S etc. would or could make it shoot better, we shall see in the spring with my H-S equipped model 70. Jay

Apart from agreeing with NE about the Blaser, there is a lot of sense in staying with a rifle you are used to - i.e. the M700. That will keep all your safeties and operations the same. Basically, there are maybe 1000 rifle brands which would do, everybody has their own favourite. But I think you made a sensible choice by staying with something you know well. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... I have been in 4 Wal-Marts, 3 had ZERO firearms, just empty cases, they said Wal-Mart is getting out of the business, they can only sell the stock on hand.

Less guns sold from Wal Mart may drive the business to smaller gunstores and, to my way of thinking, that would be a good thing. The ever multiplying Academy's, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, and Gander Mountain's will also step into the gap. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Do the Remington SPS's Lock the bolt with the safety on?? I own a bunch of '06's in Browning, Remington, Winchester and one other that I can't remember. I like the Remington because its a older rifle that locks the bolt. I love the Browning, short degrees to lift the bolt, and the love the safety since it is located in a good place, also if you are buying this rifle for horseback hunting in the west I would go with the browning since the low profile bolt design is nice for putting in a scabard. I like the winchester too. Since this is my newest gun I am still getting used to the three position safety, but I do like it. Not as much as the browning but I like it. I would buy a browing and put a 3.5 x 10x Leupold on it. Thats what I have been using since I was 12, and a lot of game has fallen to that rifle. If this purchase is going to be a "one gun" for traveling or something along those lines, I would use Dual Dovetail bases and buy a HS Precision or McMillan stock for it. Spray Paint the gun black, green or another earthy color. Stainless sticks out and it reflects. Good luck in the purchase. Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent. DRSS .470 & .500

Sako stainless synthetic, incredible rifle. Also, although not stainless, consider a Blaser. Got to be one of the hardest rifles out there.

I use a ruger 77MKII ultra light stainless with syn. stock its every bit as accurate as my Remington 700BDL and it sports a 20" If i wonted the longer barrel it would be the Ruger77 all weather stainless with syn. stock or the 77 sporter which is stainless with laminated stock. You need to go out and hold them and see which one feels best in your hands you cant go wrong with the ruger 77 remington 700 winchester 70 and alot of guys say that sabvage is very accurate and on another thread a few guys have mentioned Tikka as the way to go. Good luck with your selection. You already made a great choice by choosinf the .30/06 Later Tanoose

Wal Mart is the largest firearms dealer in the world. ther has been talk they would buy Remington. They respond to one thing and that is the desires of the consumer. That benng said. I have a Tikka T3 and regard it highly. My favorite 30.06 is a 1964 Remington 700BDL Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing.

I read a post either on the accurate or the greybeard forums that a walmart manager in a texas walmart said that they soon would not be selling anymore firearmsm in there store and all other wal-marts, i'll try and find the post and i hope its not true although gander Mountain can match any price.

No, the Remington stopped locking the bolt with the safety on almost a decade ago. Infact Remington has a recall program going on the Rem700 to replace the safety arm with the newer style that doesn't lock the bolt.
