I recently purchased a new gun and thought you guys might be interested. It is a .300 WinMag - H-S Precision Sporter Lightweight Pro Series 2000, 22" fluted barrel with threaded brake (24" w/brake on), 12 1/4" LOP (I'm short!) - Swarovski 1.5-6x42 illum 30mm 4A 1K ret. scope.

I am shooting Federal Premium Grade 200 gr. Nosler ammo. This gun has been nothing but great since I picked it up. After the initial sight-in, it is shooting really well. I have only recently been learning to shoot left-handed (right-handed and left eye dominant) and I have about 30 rounds through the gun. I still have a ways to go - 3" group at 200 yds; 1 1/2" group at 100 yds - but I am encouraged by the gun's performance.

It must be okay. I killed an 11 point buck last week - one shoulder shot at 115 yds and he just fell over.

I'll make an attempt at posting a couple of pics, but bear with me if I screw that up.

I'm extremely pleased and would highly recommend H-S Precision. I think the price was reasonable and product is terrific.

Wow, you did everything right. Very good choice with H-S, and even smarter on your choice of scope. I'm impressed with your choice of ammo. Too many people get caught up with more speed in a magnum when the idea is more bullet weight. You should enjoy this rig for a long time. thumb

Nice rig but have you shot it across a chronograph? That 22" barrel is defeating the purpose of a 300 Win Mag. A 24" would have been better ( at least 100 FPS ) & the barrel length would have been 26" with the brake.

Good shot on that buck.

Be very careful of ear damage. My ears are really shot from shooting and age. I should have been way more careful. I fired a few shots in the field with my 270 WSM where I wear no protection and I swear my hearing took another, permanent, step backwards.

A buddy has been much smarter. He got some hearing aid like devices long ago and he wears them all of the time in the field. I think his are called ESP or something and they look like a large version of the old fashioned hearing aids.

I had a 300 WM with the Boss for a while and it also had the non muzzle brake device with it. The recoil reduction with the brake was substantial. I never liked shooting the 300 mags anyway due to what I perceive as high recoil velocity but with the brake on I blasted off an entire box of ammo just for fun. One must wear double ear protection when shooting with a brake. This means both plugs and muffs. Even then!

As to the muzzle velocity I am going by what gunsmith Sisk reported over on 24hr. The barrels that he cut back lost about 20 fps per inch and not 50 fps. So your velocity is just fine with whatever it is.

You can't beat youth. After years of hauling around cannons I have latched onto a five pound 308 and I am convinced that it will do. At least I am convinced this morning.

Doug, the barrel length was based on the fact that I am 5'1" and 112 pounds and my arms are the weakest part of my body. The longer barrel makes the front of the rifle just a little too much if I'm going to do very much shooting. I am lifting my small weights every day for strength, but my left arm is much stronger than my right. I'm going to try some 300 yd shots next, and will try to do the chrono then also. I figure so far it is shooting as good at 200 as it is at 100, so it can't be too bad!

Savage, I believe in protecting my hearing very much and am always careful about it. I am having a set of the EAR Inc. protectors made, which I'm sure are similar to your friend's.

The gun weighs right at 9 1/2 pounds and seems to be perfect so far. Unless something drastically changes, I'm going to have a .375 made within the next few months. The .300 is for a plains game hunt next year and hopefully the year after a dg/pg hunt with both guns!

I'll try to get my deer pictures posted in the next day or so.

Thanks for the comments - all of them are welcome!

Excellent combination of rifle and scope.

I commend you in dealing with the eye dominance by switching shooting methods. As a sporting clays instructor, I've seen too many people struggle with the eye dominance for too long before switching to left hand shooting. The muscle memory and coordination necessary to so this really does not take that long to acquire and makes shooting much more rewarding.

I'm left handed and had to learn to shoot right handed to instruct. That was a challenge since I'm left eyed also. Not so bad now and easier on the students.

Good luck and have fun with your rifle.

Nice rifle! Me too: R handed, L eye dominant. I learned to shoot L handed a LOOONG time ago. Seems awkward to think about right handed.

Let me know when you want to sell the rifle.

Excellent rifle. And well thought out. Its obvious that you use your head for something other than a hat rack. And I will defend your choice of scopes to the death. I have elk hunted with a 300 Win for a whole lot of years with a 1.5x5 Burris on it and I have never felt handicapped.

OKAY!!! The pictures of the .300WM should be in a previous post on this thread. Here are the deer photos:

I ordered the .375 last Friday - it will be almost identical to the .300, but the stock will be their brown/black stock - just like the green but a sort of khaki brown color. Same scope but w/o the ill. ret.

Hope my pictures come out right. I really appreciate all the interest and replies guys. Any info/comments are always appreciated.

But do me a favor. See if you can get more women involved in the hunting culture. Lots of women. thumb Cool

Thanks for posting the pictures. It is indeed a nice buck but the best part for me is the big smile on your face! I see too many people caught up in head hunting who forget the simple pleasure of a successful hunt and do not seem happy.

Good luck with the .375 -- I'm sure it will serve you well. Are you going to inaugurate it on some hogs?

I'm not that into the details on reading the chrono results, etc., but ran the Federal Premium Vital Shok 200 gr. Nosler Partitions through and the "mean" figure was 2887. I know some of you guys had a question about barrel length, velocity, etc., so if there are other questions or comments, please feel free. We were using the Oehler 35P w/printer if that helps anyone. We will probably do another run just because I was able to get several boxes of ammo from the same lot and I know that can sometimes make a difference. Just FYI. Hope to hunt a few hogs this weekend or next week. Good luck everyone!

boom stick, no ring on the finger is correct, but not really "in the market" either. I just find that while I love all the totally female things - pedicures, shoes, 5 star hotels, etc. - I also really love most "guy" things too and really feel more comfortable "shooting the breeze" with the guys more so than the girls because, as you say there aren't many out there that truly love the hunting, etc. Alot of women seem to claim to like to hunt just to get included and I really enjoy it myself. I use to always get in trouble in gatherings because I wanted to be in watching basketball, boxing, etc. instead of in the other room discussing wallpaper. What can I say?

I try to recruit women whenever I can and I actually get alot of "you go girl" responses from women, so I promise to keep it up for all you menfolk out there. I'm a country girl at heart and took your post in the way I believe it was intended, so don't worry about it. I think I can hold my own! Wink

Hi Girl
Nice rifle and deer. Your 375 sounds like another winner. What will the weight of the 375 be? Are you planning to use it abroad? Hunting and shooting is way better than wall paper. That's sort of why some of the rooms aren't finished. Big Grin

I know where you are talking about and I have been there. I have a friend who is on that lease also and it is nice country. I killed my deer a little further north at another friend's father-in-law's place. I'm not sure exactly where it is located as it was a last minute place choice and I am one of the most geographically and directionally challenged people on earth, but I know it was a ways north and I think east maybe. The important thing is that I knew what to do when I got there!

I just got a new scale that I think will be more accurate for weighing things like guns - better than a bathroom scale anyway. I'll reway and let you know if there is any change. I know my .375 is going to be about 3/4 - 1 lb heavier - wow!
