300 H&H Question ?

This cartridge does not appear very popular these days. The larger 375 version has a much larger following. The 300 has such a gracefull appearance. I have heard that case life is short. Does it offer much more than say a 30-06? Any users of this old classic?

i never experienced any shortened case life. the round is a good round, especially handloaded. It gets to 300 WM type ballistics. why not more popular- its not quite a fast as a 300 whambam mangalum, and todays crowds demand the nth degree of velocity so when they finally hit the elk at 50 yards they can tell everybody it was way across the canyon a mile and a half away. In all reality i have to say that i really don't find much difference between an 06 and a 300 (boy am i gonna catch hell for that statement)

You can have unduly short case life with the 300HH if you full length resize after every loading because it has a minimal neck which thereby promotes case stretching when fully resized.

It is the slickest feeding round I have ever dealt with; and absolute marvel to chamber. Performance is between the 30-06 and the 300 WinMag. Brass is currently hard to find. Kudude

Largely displaced by all the new "wonder" mags, the old 300 H&H keeps pluggin' along. A good 100f/s slower than the 300 Winchester magnum, the H&H is every bit as good.

The .300 H&H is as good as any of the magnums and as good as the .30-06 but some of us like the slightly lighter rifles chambered in the old '06.

My .300 H&H was my sole rifle on Safari and the Kudu and Gemsbok died quite respectfully. Had I used a .30-06 the same result would have happened.

For those wanting a .300 Magnum and they find a used H&H they have found all the .30 caliber they need!

There was a thread about it here: https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...=836108177#836108177

It is said that Holland's Super 30 as it was also known was their answer to what we in UK called the .300 US Government Cartridge. (Or 30-06). Designed to give 30-06 performance but with lower pressures in the heat of Africa and India.

Hmm.. Well thats pretty much true about any belted case or any rimmed case where the case headspaces at the belt or rim. Repeated full length sizing of these type of cases is always bad..

Yep.. The .300 H&H is one marvelous cartridge. It was introduced in 1925? and as slower burning powders became available over time it got even better. It is a dream to reload as it has enough neck to be able to use any bullet one wishes, and as kudude said, for as long as it is, it feeds flawlessly.
Unfortunately, it has become victim to the general publics desire for newer, faster, better, and of coarse the firearms manufacturers have responded by making what they believe are newer, faster, better cartridges.
Well IMHO all these are in fact newer, but they are not all that faster or better..
With my .300 H&H I can safely push a 180gr bullet out of a 24" barrel at 3000fps.
Now I have chonographed factory .300 Weatherby 180gr ammo out of a Weatherby rifle at a little over 3100 fps. Until you get into the 'ultra' mags the Weatherby is still the hottest .300 magnum is it not? So what does a hundred fps equate to? Ok, you get a few more yards of range... Big whoopie.. All the elk I've killed with the H&H didn't just up and throw a yellow flag saying.. "Hey! you shot me with an obsolete cartridge!"... No they just died and wound up in the freezer.

Ok, I know we gotta keep the economy going and all that stuff, but I will NEVER give up my .300 H&H!
I guess since I also shoot 7x57, 30/30 and .358 Win, that makes me an old fashioned kind a guy.. Cool. Cool
I am kinda pissed that W-W quit making brass for it..

Why do they call it common sense, when it is so uncommon??

My Rem 721A in .300 H&H is and always will be one of my favorite North American game rifles. Does everything it needs to do. I have a favorite couple .375s and some other .300 Magnums (Norma and Win) but I sure love that 721. Can't see any reason to think of it as obsolete. Reloading is simple, no full length resize unless absolutely needed and a bit of case trimming now and then and you're good to go. This may be from somebody that still hunts at times with .30-40 Krags and other "obsoletes" but I think it's still a perfectly valid cartridge choice for most game animals on the planet, just hard to find factory ammo on local store shelves in North America. In Africa that isn't a problem at all.

you need to recheck your chrono. I've owned and used both the 300 H&H & Weatherby and there is an honest 250 fps difference. Now as to whether that's worthwhile, that's another issue alltogether, but my 300 Weatherby clocks right at 3250 fps with factory ammo and I have no problem duplicating with factory loads. My H&H in turn can achieve 3000 fps (3010 to be exact) with 180s. I've not experienced issues with cases either and I full length resize. jorge

What's your barrel length? Mine is 26" and I've seen 3175-3190 from my H&H with some 180 loadings. Noslers and a couple grains more than you are s'posed to of 22. Shoots better a couple grains down and at about 2850 though.

The .300 H&H performs about the same as the .300 Win. Mag. or the .308 Norma. Its' factory ammo develops about 200 FPS higher velocities than FACTORY loaded '06 ammo with the same bullet weights. But it requires a longer action and magazine box than the '06 length cartridges. This MAY help explain why its' popularuty has declined since about 1963.......
