Just picked up a barrel for my Blaser R8 in this caliber. I have some ammo. What should I expect and what should I like?

You should expect that barrel to be toast in 1000 rounds +or-.

You will love it. You will get far more than 1000 rounds of barrel life. Match your bullet yo the game animal and do t ask it to be your moose rifle. DRSS Kreighoff 470 NE Valmet 412 30/06 & 9.3x74R

How does it compare to the 6.5 PRC?? I’m thinking about building a 6.5mm rifle and hadn’t thought about the the 6.5-284. Go Duke!!

I wouldn't hesitate to kill a moose with it. That said, it's not much different then a .270 There is nothing I would use a 270 for that I wouldn't use my 6.5x284 on.

Just out of curiosity, what is the parent case, if there is one. I'm not familiar with this one but it looks remarkably like a 7X57 necked to 6.5 w/slightly increased case capacity. I'm just curious. Never mistake motion for action.

Parent case is the .284, short fat case with a related rim. Very similar performance to the prc. Very accurate round as well.

You get a blaser match barrel ? You will get at least 10k rounds and if you loose accuracy within 10 years blaser will give you a new barrel (regardless of round count) I was interested in it but I went the 300 norma mag route and am very happy with it. Mike

Mike, It is the match barrel from Blaser. Thanks for the info. I am liking this one a lot based on the comments.

If you own a silencerco omega suppressor - silencerco sells a m18x1 cap for it and other silencerco models. If you want to run it unsuppressed buy the blaser muzzle brake - recoil will drop down to 223 level. I shoot my 300 norma mag with the muzzle brake - recoil is less than 6.5 cm. It is too damn pleasant for a barrel where bullets cost $6 a pop. Mike

You'll love it because it's almost as good as my 6.5 x 280AI. Barrel life: If you don't keep shooting it when the barrel is hot, you'll get way more than 1000 rounds down the tube before accuracy suffers to any real degree. You will NOT got 10,000 rounds before accuracy is totally shot! Yes, I've shot-out enough rifles to have a bit of knowledge on the subject. With that said, chances are that you'll accidently "clean-out" the accuracy before you shoot it out unless you do lots of target shooting. PS: keep the muzzle off the floorboards of the truck so you don't mess up the crown! Enjoy the new cartridge! Zeke

I don't understand why you guys don't just buy a pre-64 model 70 in 264 Win Mag and put a new barrel on it, but variety is the spice of life! Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

I'd think you could love it or hate it depending on what bullet you shoot, at what weight, at what animal, from what angle, at what velocity...... StalkerJack

The 6.5/284 should be loved because for all intents and purposes it is basically a 6.5/06 in a shorter action. It was the 6.5 Creedmore on steroids before the 6.5 Creedmore ever existed. AK-47 The only Communist Idea that Liberals don't like.

This. I have a fast twist 6.5-284 (and a 6mm-284 and a 284). I also have a 6.5 Rem Mag and a 6.5-06, there is little difference between them ballistically. - dan "Intellectual truth is eternally one: moral or sentimental truth is a geographic and chronological accident that varies with the individual" R.F. Blaser barrels are nitrided and will last several times the life of a typical rifle barrel.

Rebarrel it to the 7mm-6.5-284 aka the 284 I like the idea of the 6.5-284 for heavy bullet hunting rounds and not so much long range target stuff. You only burn barrels if you load to the max but have the ability to über load. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. I get about 1500-1650 rounds through mine before it opens up to 3/4 MOA. I use mine for long range hunting and 1,000 yard rifle matches. I typically load the 142 grain SMK at 2860 fps for match use. I'll trust it to put a bullet anywhere I want at distances way past where I'll take game and I've shot coyotes past 700 yards with it. My best 10 shot group was 5.2 inches at 1,000 yards. The 6.5x284 is still winning the Wimbledon Cup at the Nationals. What's not to like: Inherently accurate Light on recoil Easy acess to good cases 6.5mm has some excellent bullets
