which rifle brand and action. Having only one rifle to hunt backcountry elk in Colorado then taking it to Africa for plains game. A lightweight SS/S or pretty wood and polish. Me I would look at the new stainless M70 Featherweight in that perfect caliber with Leupold VX-R 3x9.

My choice would be either my Dakota Safaris or my AHR custom CZs. In SS/S, I love my Ruger 35 Whelen Hawkeye, 1 in 12 twist barrel with its Leupold 2.5-8 VX3i.

I have about the same as above in 358 win. except my scope is 3x9. I wouldn't hesitate to add another similar setup to the pile.

For Africa, I use two types of rifle, and bolt action Mauser actioned 375 H&H with a 3x9 scope in quick detach scope bases, and iron sights, Or one of my double rifles, 9.3X74R, or 470 NE depending on the type of terrain where I hunt, and what size the animal is. However for the world given the choice of only three rifles a scoped Mannlicher Shoenauer 243, a scoped Mauser 375 H&H, and a iron sighted 470NE double rifle. But I could take anything on earth with a good 375H&H bolt in a control feed action, and both scope and irons. 375 H&H for the world. How ever why limit yourself to only a couple of rifles when there are so many very nice hunting rifles! That is till the demarcates outlaw fire arms all together! Then they will be after your knifes, and bows as well. They are taking a path that Hitler did to disarm the people of Germany so they couldn't avoid his concentration camps, and we all know how that turned out! Enjoy your firearms while they are yours! ………………………………………………... ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

My pre 64 mod. 70 Fwt in 30-06. I have little use for SS and plastic stocks, albiet I do have a Ruger 77 mark 2, .338 boat tail plastic stock and SS metal, even has a ugly muzzle brake option..for those late season elk hunts when the snow is deep and the weather is wet in Idaho, sometimes I even use it, out of desperation! Tough to beat a good M70. You might also look into the extreme weather version too. One thing often overlooked in a backcountry rifle is ease of disassembly and simplicity while out hunting. It's not an uncommon thing for need to take a rifle apart do to ice or crude gumming up the works. A Winchester or Mauser makes a lot of sense do to their simple and rugged designs. It does not have to be be a very lightweight rifle. I don't know about plains game hunting in Africa, but US moose and elk hunting close and far nothing beats a 180 grainer out of a .300WM, a 170 (or so) grainer out of a 7mm Magnum, or a 200-225 grainer out of the .338WM. That said, a pre-64 Winchester or a Dakota action would be quite nice
