Hey Guy's, I can knock one more off the list now. I just got the barreled action back from Mike McCabe and it's about perfect. The rifle is just a bunch of parts picked up here and there, but sum total of what they made even surprised me and was there though the whole process.

The barrel came off an old "guild" mauser and was auctioned off on Ebay. It was an 8X57J but the bore was ruined. It was sent to Jim Dubell for a re-bore. A .338-06 was chosen. Mark Stratton installed the barrel.

The action is one of those Italian made Mausers Legacy sports was selling at one time. It's called a Safari M98 Global Trading Mauser. A little rough around the edges, but they clean up real nice. A few years ago Legacy wanted out of the Mauser action business and deeply discounted these. I was able to pick it up for a song. The only thing that was done to it was a new bolt handle added. The old ones look like the old F.N.'s. They were nice, but I wanted something different on this rifle. Mike McCabe added this one.

The stock blank came from from Luxus Walnut. Adam of at Luxus put me in a far nicer piece of walnut than I should got for what I spent. He explained it was a "second" and couldn't get full price for it because of a bark pocket it had that probably wouldn't turn out. Shane Thompson turned the blank and worked real hard to miss as much as possible. He couldn't miss everything, what he couldn't miss he layed it out where it would be easy to fix. It turned out very nice. An almost local guy named Tim Lyon-Smith checkered it for me.

Major credit goes to Mike McCabe on this project. He changed the bolt handle, rust blued the barreled action.

It turned out very nice, I especially like the 'red' in the stock.

Yea, pretty neat bunch of spare parts eh?

I used the English red stain because after I got it all ready to finish the stock just had too much figure in it. It would almost cause vertigo if you looked at it too long. Stain has a way of toning down the figure in wood a little, that's why most stock makers don't like it. In this case it was a life saver.

The .338-06 is a great choice in caliber/cartridge also! It duplicates the .318 Westley Richards, which was an original chambering by Mauser, but without the hassle of having to use .330" diameter bullets.

.366, yes it's all integral. There is a plug in the rib near the action. I think it was for a claw base, but it was long gone before I bought it.

It looks like a $25K rifle to me.

Dempsey, Shane sent back some bandsaw scraps of the blank after it was turned. I picked a nice piece and chiseled it out and then shaped it with a Dremmal tool so it would fit tight in the bark pocket, After that I mixed up some Miles Gilbert bedding compound, flooded the bark pocket with it and then pushed the patch in. I let it cure and sanded it flat. I think it's pretty good.


500Grains, you're far too kind or the camera really likes this rifle.

The .338-06 is all new to me. I've admired it for years but have never owned one. I'll get a blood on it this year for sure.

Yea, that's Pilkingtons English red on it. I hadn't planned on staining it, but the figure with the color was just a little overwhelming.

I think the stain just kind of brought it all together.

Is that a Gerome Glimm bolt handle or did Mike do the checkering also?

It's a McFarland handle. You can buy them at Brownells. I do have a Glimm handle that I plan on using on a different project. It's 1st class stuff.

Impressive work. That stain was just what that stock needed, but I would not have realized it beforehand. You have an excellent eye.

Is that a S&B 4x36 I see on it? Good allround scope with a minimum of fuss. If you find yourself in a really tight spot merely remove it and use the irons. I plan on having my 8x60s set up exactly the same.

Yes, it's a S&B 4X. I really like those scopes. It's a great little scope. Clear and tough. I'm down to 2 right now. At one time I owned four of them.

What technique did you use to finish out the stock after staining it (to keep from wet sanding thru the stain)?

It turned out very nice. I really like the reddish color for that stock.
