It seems I have 3 .300 rums for some reason. A super grade Winchester a Montana stainless synthetic then another Winchester classic that might be begging for a rebarrel. .338,.375, or??

those choices mentioned would require changing the boltface... most common change is a .404 jeffery,, simple rebarrel...

338 rum or 375 rum same case. I meant keeping the same bolt. Yeah 404 a possibility but I have many big bores and maybe what a fast 338 or 375

I've had three 338 RUMs and have a 375 RUM currently.

I prefer the 375 for the kind of hunting I do.

It would be a tough choice for me between the 338 & 375 RUM. I have neither, but like both.
My choice would be the 375 RUM.

I had my RUM chambered rifle rebored to .425 Westley Richards. The bolt face is wrong, but I make the cases out of RUM brass and I have a spare bolt in case I ever find myself with factory .425 ammunition
(not likely).

Yes, RUMs are just standard belted mag bolt size, so no drama there.
Go to 338 RUM.

I'd vote the 338-300RUM. It's an easy wildcat to make, and I'm guessing you already have a supply of 300RUM brass. This basically has the best long range ballistics you can get out of a "standard" rifle. It's fun to play with, but expensive to feed, so I have a few other barrels that share the same receiver.

I have the same problem and am 99% decided on the .404 Jeffery.

I have never found the .338 Win. Mag or .375 H&H Mag. to be lacking.

So, I can see no need for RUM/Jeffery based versions of those fine rounds.

I have even settled on a .300 H&H Mag. as my .300 Mag. of choice. Plenty of power for anything I would want to shoot with a .300 bore.

In the same vein, the .404 Jeffery offers plenty of power and, beyond that, is also a classic. (As you may have figured out, I’m a sucker for classics.)

It would also get me one third of the way toward my classic dream battery of a .303, a .404 and a .505! Big Grin

As jimacat said, the Model 70 CRF rifles in 300 RUM were sought after for conversion to 404 Jeffery rifles.

Good advice all. Except now I have more options to consider.

Votes for 338 rum
375 rum
404j
460 GA
425 WR

375 sounds pretty useful. I’ll look at them all

I got a good assortment of big bores so I’d like to find something that compliments them in some way. Not sure exactly what that may be but I’ll find something

Ross,

A 225 ACB at 3150 fps is a hammer in the 338 Ultra. I love the 338 caliber. I've had great results with 338 WM, 340 WBY, 330 Dakota, 338 Ultra and 338-06. To my mind the Ultra is the best of the lot.

I share the appreciation for 338 cartridges. The common 338 Winchester seems work well on most anything in North America.
The 338 RUM does bump up the velocity a couple of notches. And added case capacity has advantages when using the higher bc bullets.

I am just more intrigued by the 375 RUM. A 270 grain LRX at close to 3000 fps would not be too shabby in flight and upon impact.

I can easily get 3000 fps with 270 gr TSX bullets from by .375 RUM and have used that combination in South Africa for a variety of animals from a Steenbok to a Cape Eland.

Occasionaly I'll find 7mm RUM or .300 RUM cases at the range and they easily neck up to .375 RUM. Big Grin

Maybe think about a 35 caliber on the RUM case, I had one built and love it. Or try a 416 on the RUM case.

404 is the obvious answer.

375 RUM is one of my favorites and has a lot of versatility...270gr at 3k, 300 at 2800, 350 at 2550 can do a lot with recoil as the only downside. They never made any Left Hand M70 CRF's in the Ultra's so mine is a converted 300 Win.

In the process of building a 416/375 RUM for an upcoming brown bear hunt on another converted M70 lefty...mainly to run 350 TTSX at 2800 and because finding a 416 anything left hand is crazy expensive.

Keep in mind the .338RUM and .375RUM are different length cases.
338's are shorter.

IF any of you have a spare 50 7mm or 300RUM cases
I would like to pick up that many more.
I built a .358RUM. Split too many cases before I annealed the rest. I can't use the .338RM's too short.

Thank you,

George

I think one is usually best advised to sell his existing rifle and buy another in whatever he wants like a 338 Win or a 300 H&H or whatever blows his skirt up! or neck up your RUM to a 338 cal. if you must

If you really want to play with it, go .358 caliber as you can load bullets from 90 to 300 grains.

Bottom line is I cannot imagine life without at least one 404 Jefferys...but apparently you are of the velocity clan and would probably be more content with a wildcat .338 of sorts. And of course, there is no problema with that.

Yep .338 Edge! Hell of a cartridge, easy to tune and simple to form.
