I want to make a display for my gun room. The 30-06 family Could the members of AR kindly care to take a moment to list as many as they can think of. Keep to only standard long action as I want to do a .308 family as well 400 Whelen through 6-06...or bigger and smaller. The .25-06 and the .35 Whelen are the only factory cartridges which are identical to the parent .30-06 cartridge in everything but caliber, sharing its body length, over all length, and shoulder. Other factory cartridges vary in different ways: .270 Winchester: The first factory .30-06 derivative has a longer overall length (2.495" vs. 2.54"). .280 Remington: Has a longer length base-to-shoulder and a slightly longer length overall The rest of the cartridges based on the .30-06 are wildcats, so their dimensions will vary with the whims of whoever does the chambers. Some can be longer, shorter, have a different shoulder angle, or be "improved" with less body taper. Of course, some can be identical. 6mm/06 and 6.5/06 are frequently found wildcats which are usually chambered to match .30-06 case specs, but not always. Probably thousands of military Mausers have been rechambered to 8mm/06 using standard case dimensions. But you run into some "improved" 8mm/06 chamberings, also. Not sure, but the .338/06 may have some SAAMI specs from its proprietary originator which may or may not be identical to the .30/06. The case can and has been necked to every conceivable caliber from .17 up to the diameter which makes for a straight-walled case. Such a cartridge (about .411"? .416"? .423"?) has to headspace on the case mouth like a .45 ACP, not a very desirable circumstance for a centerfire rifle.

I've had several, but basically between wildcat rounds and factory pick a bullet and and it has been done in the case. I've personally owned .25-06, 6.5-06, .270, .280, 8mm-06, .338-06, and .35 Whelen, and I've wanted to try the .375-06 and .400 Whelen. Ted I can help you with several dummies if you want, I have died for everyone I mentioned that I owned except the 8mm-06.

Ted- .375 Whelen and .375 Scovill, a couple that are one in the same cartridge: 7MM Express = .280 Remington .338-06 A-Square = .338-06 And then you can look into these cartridge families: the OKH's, Hawk's, Howell's, Gibbs' and P.O. Ackley's Improved cartridges-

Check out P.O, Ackley's books "Handbook for Shooters & Reloaders" Volumes I & II. He shows his line of improved cartridges plus the improved lines by ICL, Gibbs, and others, and that's just what was available in the 60s and 70s. NRA Endowment Life Member Life Member Wild Sheep Foundation

The 338-06 is simply a necked up cartridge with no other changes.

If it ain't got a belt, its a son, daughter or kin to the 30-06, Its been seized up or down to almost every caliber out there that fits in a bolt action rifle..If you count shortening it you can add the rest of them, including the .308, 250 Savage, 257 Robts,6 mm and 243, and a host of others..
