cal30 1906What great calibers do you just not like?
I dont care for the
.444marlin
.308 win
.223 rem
or any of the new wsm or wssm line of shells.
the .17 rem is not a high prioity either.
I do like the RUM line though.

Thumpper470Everything between 243 and 338/378 is crud except for 300 W'by and the 257 AI. Especially bad are any 7mm, plus 300 Win, 30-06. Then anything under 375/378 and all over it except the 470 & 416 Rigby. All 22's are ok. Under 22's get real. 50 BMG genuflec, genuflec
04 October 2005, 09:15
TreeFarmerI have never desired to own a rifle chambered for either the .270 Winchester, .444 Marlin, or any Weatherby except the .300.
04 October 2005, 11:19
2ndtimerI really don't care for belted magnums, or Ultra Mags. Frankly don't much care for the 30-06 nor the .308 Win. either. Used to like the .243, but now realize it really is a 'tweener', not really big enough for medium game, more than is needed for varmints. Used to not care for any .264/6.5 mm cartridge until I bought a 6.5x55 Howa. Now I have to say the .260 Remington is probably my favorite .308 based cartridge, still think the Swede has it beat. Really like my .270WSM, can't imagine why anyone wouldn't like one. Probably because they have never shot one or loaded for one. Think it is much better than the .270 Win.
Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

seafire/B17GI heard an explanation from a lady who I know that is probably the biggest rifle nut I have ever known.....
it is modified but it fits the situation...
" I never met a caliber I didn't like.. I just like some more than others..."
that fits my perspective on the subject...

ChopperGuyThis debate is really a mater of preferences rather than "hate." I prefer several calibers over others.
I'd rather shoot a .257, 6.5,.30, .35, 9.3, or .416 cal.
I'd rather not shoot any 7mm (God save me, I'll get plenty of grief for that in the US.)
I agree with seafire/B17G - I just haven't met a 7mm yet, maybe experience will change attitude (age helps with that one.)
Regards,
Mike

dogcatTHe various Weatherby cartridges. He was a great marketer.
04 October 2005, 21:45
skl1I pretty much like all of them. The 7mmRemMag is as close to disliked as I can get, and that's probably because I'm not crazy about the rifle I've got chambered in 7mmRM.
I tend to like the old calibers and the less prosaic calibers more than the most popular chamberings. I also like to err on the side of using too big a caliber, so I have very few 6mm and below CF rifles. This is probably also another reason I'm not crazy about the 7mmRM; I can't quite make myself take it when I could take a .30 cal instead.
I like all the pistol calibers, too. I'm not crazy about handguns that are bigger and heavier than small rifles, though.

boom stickcan someone do a tally on each caliber...sorry no time, that should be interesting, i think the 270 might be the biggest loser

I had no idea the 45-70 so effective on buffalo, HA!
I have no experience with buffalo, but when did deer get so hard to kill?

the_captainDon't like:
270
30-06
220 Swift
243
any WSM, WSSM, RSAUM (but do like the RUM series)
all Weatherby stuff (except the 375 Wby)
444 Marlin
450 Marlin especially
338 Lapua
30 Carbine
257 Roberts
22 Hornet
While I'm sure these will all do their job - I won't ever have one. It sure is nice not to have to put in any justification for this list!!!

AtkinsonI don't know why anyone would hate any cartridge, the point is there is precious little difference in any of the ones named...some have different uses...
Rounds that I do not use are the .243 and 7 mm Rem mag. but there is certainly nothing wrong with either..
Why is that everytime someone wounds an animal or misses an animal that caliber is no longer any good!! Thats BS...

smedleyWith all said here I almost hate to admit I love the .243 'yotes in the wheat fields at 2-300 go down. Have dropped a deer with the 100 Partition.
The other thing I want to add is the fact I really do not like the 30-06. Probably because so many think it is the only gun to ever own. I do own and have owned more than one. I believe in diversity.
22lr more than a few
22WM best shooter I own
22-250
243
25-06
7mm-08
and so on and so on.
I know this is not the real place for this one but the 25acp is the most worthless round ever brought into existence!!!!

Add the 25-35 and the 351 Winchester SL to that list, but none of these are or were "Great Cartridges" even with a long stretch.
The 25 ACP isn't a medium bore rifle cartidge, so we are drifting, but its good for cockroaches at arms length in my book. Yuck !

PerforatorOddly enough, I don't really favor .30 cal anything. I have a Win. 30-30 and a T/C .30 Herret but don't shoot them often. I have complete reloading setups for about five different .30 options but don't own any rifles chambered for them. I've never been enamored by the 30-06 as a standard bearer, for no particular reason. I guess cartridge selection is really an individual process and not many cartridges are totally useless.
If I selected the best battery out of what I have on hand it would be: (Rifles anyway)
.22 Long Rifle
.22 K-Hornet
.44 Mag
7mm Mag
.375 Belted Rimless Magnum
.458 Win Mag

grizz007This is funny!!!! Some of the best calibers being "targeted". I thought long and hard as I laughed at some of the prejudices but I can say which ones I will not own but not hate and maybe have owned at one time or another is the .7mm Mag, .300winnie, Weathebies, convertin my .270 into a .338-06 --so I guess I just shucked the .270 but love the .45-70 it is one of the finest rounds out there along with the .30-30

makeminestainless30-06, 223 and 45 ACP. All are excellent, have available components and come in excellent firearms. I have ran into too many blowhards at camp who spout off how your “not a manâ€, “a fool†or some other insult if you don’t use one. Nothing is so frustrating as to have someone yell at some kid all night about how the 280 is inadequate for deer but the 30-06 is just right to get you to associate that asshole with the caliber. It’s a testament to John Browing’s design that I don’t hate the 1911, despite how many assholes go on and on about its absolute superiority!

fredj338Jarrod, calm down buddy. No one wants to take your wifes .243 away from you.

You can certainly kill deer w/ one but there are better rounds out there for general deer/antelope hunting IMO. You're all grown up now, time to get a real deer rifle.

bja105I've got a new one. 30 Carbine. Only good for making noise, and not cheap enough to make noise well.
308 - I blame Dad's Savage 99.
30-06 I just fell in love with a 1903 sporter. Now I just hate 30-06 users. Most of them are afraid of theirs.
22 mag - all the limitations of 22lr at 3 times the price.
338-06, 35 Whelen, 9.3x62- All the bickering about whose best drives me nuts.

That's the stupidest statement I've heard in a long time. Maybe you should try tell that to the few hundred deer that my dad has killed with one. Several of them 300 or more yards and a lot of them dropping in their tracks.
Or tell it to my 12 year old nephew who has used his since he was about 7 or 8 and killed deer every year with it and some of his at 300 yards. Most of his using 65 or 70 grain bullets with most dropping in their tracks.
Like I said if you find it a challenge to kill a deer with a 243 then go to the shooting supply, buy some buy plenty of bullets and powder or factory loads which ever you use and go learn how to shoot.
By the way when did whitetail deer become dangerous?
I did not mean to piss anyone off. I think this thread was made for fun. My statement was a poor attempt at humor. While I have no doubt you can kill deer with a 243, and I do know and believe that shot placement is first a foremost when hunting. However I think that there are much better cartridges. Most have been listed here as worthless.
It will be alright, have a drink on me! Heres to the 243!

billhilly66.35 Remington - too slow
.357 mag. - too loud
.243 - (I don't care if Jarrod does use it for elk)
45-70 - refer to all the other threads
.270 - what the hell, dog pile

Dont worry nobody getting excited here. Actually I havent deer hunted with my 243 in a few years. Yes I have used other calibers also for deer. Like 257, 270, 45-70, 300wm, 338wm etc. but the point is I've seen the little 243 drop them in their tracks just as fast as the bigger calibers. IMO bullet placement and construction are the main factors. That's all

DufurI don't hate any calibers. I do hate a few rifles. cartridges that I don't use and probably will never buy a rifle chambered in are: med bore only now:
8mm rem mag, 358 norma mag, 303 british, 257 roberts, 30-40 krag, 340 weatherby, 7mm weatherby, 300 wsm, 25wssm, 307 win, and 7mm mauser. Although we have no need for alot of the newer cartridges/chamberings it is good for us shooters as it give us more choices and to further split hairs such as this on which are better and why.

schromfJarod,
I spent some time in the far North ( and South but thats a differnet story ). I was very suprised that the most popular round by the native population was the 243. No guys I am not nuts and I certainly thought they were. I couldn't think of a worse round for Polar Bear, or Walrus. I always figured that the reason for this is they had dogs, and that gave them advantage they needed against bears.
They also hunted Caribou with it. After harvesting several Caribou north of the Artic Circle I decided that these are not near as big bodied as caribou in south of the circle, so this didn't suprise me.
I really think they picked it cause it worked so well on seals and they just don't buy anything else.
Anyway strange and wierd in my book but thats what they used.
