What to re-barrel 375 H&H to

Hi my shooting buddy needs to re-barrel a 375 which he has been hunting for years.

It's a magnum Mauser CF action so length is not an issue

Any suggestion ?

He just fancy a change after 18 years hunting with this caliber

What Biebs said. The only caliber I can imagine that would be as versatile is the .404. Stick with the .375.

I think a 404 Jeffrey interest him a lot

I showed him the thread and this is one cal ire he always wanted but cost was always an issue when he was younger and there were plenty of cheap 375 about

In addition a relatively les bArky recoil for his age would be nice

To him the 404 has always been a romantic tradition caliber whereas the 375 is a working caliber ..

Most important he keep ythe bolt face and mag well then it is a straight forward change of barrel and rechambering job plus blueing

If smaller than .375 I suggest the 300H&H. If larger than .375 I suggest the .400 H&H, a simple barrel job.

Since I live and work in central London within walking distance of holland I contacted them for cases and you really don't what to know how much they want for ammo or cases

Even if want to pay their prices they may not supply you unless you are one of their customer

I think have sold him the idea of a 404 Jeffrey now

It's something he has wanted and he understand he might not have the flat trajectory as a 375 but at his age he has Ben there and done them all so a change of scenery would be nice

Also there are more factory ammo than wildcats for him. He gets a lot of invites and he likes the idea ofpick up and go rather than worry about ammo

I'd stay with the .375 myself. My Mauser .375 H&H is my "One gun keeper" if I had to give up everything else. That said, my next big bore fun project will be something from the 40 caliber group. They're very interesting, and I don't have one smaller than .458.

Does he want to go larger or smaller. 404 Jeffery or 300 H&H would be good candidates if he must change. The 375 is hard to beat for a one rifle to do it all.

I agree about the .375 being the 'one gun keeper' but since I also have a .404, it's the best of both worlds. Great calibers, both of them, and hard to find fault with either.

I didn't notice you were in London. In the USA we have a few places to get ammo and more to get brass.

what does he hunt? or does he hunt? I, myself, consider the 375 to be a medium, and pretty comfortable to shoot .. if you are reloading, a 458 lott, throttled back to 2150 with 500gr bullets is very comfy to shoot...

nothing wrong with a 404.. just more to it than just swapping the barrel. where a 416 rem or 458 lott are

Since he doesnt want to change the bolt face or mag boe I believe the 416 rem would work better than the 404 since it is same basic cartridge.

Ammo-One website has some nice cartridges but some of the information they publish is erroneous. For example, they label those cartridges 400H&H and 375H&H but that's wrong. The one on the left is a 400 but the one on the right is not a 375. It is a 300H&H.

They also write, "In response to the request, Russel Warren of Holland & Holland developed 2 cartridges to fit the bill, the 400 H&H (.416 cal) and the 465 H&H, both based on the 375 case." But that's all wrong. The technical Director at H&H is Russell Wilkin not Russel Warren. The 400 H&H uses a .411 bullet like the 450/400 and not a .416, and the 465 H&H is based on the large Weatherby case and not on an H&H case.

In fact, the diameter of the shoulder of the 375 is greater than the diameter of the 400 at the same place. As you can see from the picture above, the 400H&H looks like a 300H&H necked up and blown out. The 400H&H is said to feed as slick as the 300H&H and, if that is true, I might just have to get one.

If I didn't already have a .404 (which also feeds like grease) I would join you. In a DG rifle, as in combat, reliability is everything. A long sloping shoulder is a comfort in a tight spot.
