I been very happy with a 150 grain Speer Hot core
for a long time. But they are getting hard to find.
I have 2 .308s a savage 99F, witch is very accurate, with the Speer bullet under win 748.
My CZ in limited shooting so far is insanely accurate. I blew up my jeep motor so shooting is sort of on the back burner.
I am thinking Hornady or Sierra 150 grain Flat base bullets should be more or less as good as the speer if they shoot well at 2800 fps ?
I could go Nosler , but if i wanted to spend that much i think i would go with 150 gr ttsx Barnes, my CZ put four into 1 hole and the 5th a half an inch away.
How have the Sierra 150 grain Flat base bullets done for you guys ? ...tj3006

I have used Hornady Interlocks and Sierra Came Kings
for years. They have always performed very well.
You do not need a $3.00 bullet to kill deer

Flat base regular bullets as a component are disappearing. Hand loaders must not be buying them anymore. They are still available as ammunition in big box stores.

They still work terrific. If you want to stick with a flat base, the Interlock and Pro Hunter should work just as well as the Hot Cor.

I use the Hornady 150's in my 308 and the sierra 150's in my 0-6.
the 0-6 actually has a MV of 2800 fps, the 308 not so much.
the interlocks are a bit tougher and don't blood up the onside as much as the sierra's, but they both kill deer if I can hit them.

There's also the Rem PSPCL at Midway. 2800 fps MV would be good.

I have killed many dozens of deer with the 165gr Rem cor-loc none of them have complained.

Yep, totally agree. I've used Hornady bullets for years. No need to be spendy on premium Safari bullets just to kill deer.

I'll echo what others have said. I've been using the Hornady 150 Gr. flat base interlock, in two different .308's, on deer for a very long time. Always work great for me. I rarely have to track a deer shot with one of these bullets since I always see them fall.

TJ I've used 150 gr Hornady spire pts for nearly 50 yrs on deer. The shape of the bullet tip has changed but not the accuracy or effectiveness on deer. They have been loaded in 300 Sav, 7.5x55,308 and 30-06 and never a problem. I have also used some plain old Rem PSP core-lok . They are getting hard to find as components so why switch to something you can't find??

I'm with p dog shooter, the 165 gr Cor-Lokt kills like lightning at 308 velocities. I've had nothing but one-shot DRTs from 50-130 yards.

I use Hornady 180 SSTs, and get a nice exit wound on lung shots.

I just finished a hunt in Africa and shot a lot of small antelope (among other things) and was amazed at the lack of big exit wounds with 250 AFs out of a .338 WM. I had a few Hornady 225 SPs and used one on my leopard (and must say I didn't get a big exit wound from that bullet either even though he was quartering toward me and I put it on his shoulder).

i just found 25 rounds of a hornady 150 grain interlock over 48 W 748, that used to shoot in a pre 64 featherweight.
It chambers fine in the CZ, i think i will try them, its a pretty hot load to just shoot with out working up, so i will put together a few at 46 47 and 47.5 , 748 is great powder, and 48 grains should be fast,
I like 165s in the 06 and 300 H&H, but i like to get 2800 give or take a little.
I have a couple hundred Sierra Boat tails, witch would probably be great in any of my modern 30s thanks for sharin ! ...tj3006

I see no reason to change from the 125 grain Nosler BT and Accubond bullets. My daughter has killed a pile of deer with them the last four years in he .300 Savage.M700 Classic. Just picked up 250 Accubond seconds for right at $100 delivered from SPS with their father's day sale. So I figure I'm paying 15 cents more a bullet than what you average for a bonded core.

No need for a premium bullet for deer IMO..Id go with the 165 gr. Hornday or the 150 gr. Hornady..The NOsler Accubonds are great bullets on deer and elk...Lots of choices find one that shoots good in your 99...As Im sure you know the 99 I got from you is a tack driver..Ive been shooting 150 gr. bullets in it and they all shoot great..its a tack driver.

I might add the Balistic tips are deadly, and cheap at the store, but I find them a little too destructive on the meat.

I've had great results with 168gr Ballistic Tips. Most of my shots are around 200yds or so.

Although premium bullets aren't really a necessity for most deer/elk hunters, with as much money as you spend on a typical big game hunt, another $10 - $15 buck per box is not really that big a deal for me.

Just make sure your rifle handles your bullet/cartridge load accurately and consistently.

I've shot the 165 grain Hornady Interlock BTSP in my 308 Win since 1981 anf they have performed perfectly.

If you want to try the Noslers go to the Nosler proshop where you can buy their seconds (cosmetic/appearance issues) for a lot cheaper.

I’ve had good luck with the 165 Nosler BT on antelope. However, with deer/antelope size game, I think anything that will expand reliably is fine, core separation or not. I also really rem core-loks.

I second the 150 gr factory seconds from Midway USA. My personal solution would be pony up for the Barnes 150 gr TTSX. 20 years ago my son came back from the Marines in time for the whitetail season in Missouri. Shot a fat doe in the left front shoulder and we found it in the right ham while butchering. That was the old 75 gr X from Barnes in a .243, before the blue meanies came out. I'm playing with the load using a 130 TTSX in the .308 right now. Packy

You might want to revisit the ballistic tip. The 125 out of my daughters .300 Savage at 3000 fps MV has proven to be nothing but tough. It has blown through white tail and pronghorn out to 350 yards with ease and hits like a sledge hammer. My daughter will be using that bullet or the 125 Accubond on mule deer this third season, I've got plenty of both to load in either her .300 Savage or .308 Win.

I can agree in the disappointment regarding Speer bullets. For deer one of my all-time favorites has been the .308 Mag Tip, most have been discontinued in favor of either vanilla cup/core or more costly Grand Slams.

I've personally only used, in 2 .308s, the 150 Corlokt and the 165 Ballistic tip. I loaded the Hornady 150SP for several 30-06 shooters. My BIL always used the Sierra 150 SBT in his .308. I have shot bookoo Speer boat tails in several calibers, but never killed anything with them. I oloaded the Speer 130 for a friends .270 and the 165 BT in his 30-06. He killed his biggest ( East Tx) buck with the Speer BT. Lots of good choices!

At 308 velocities, a 150 or 165 gr Ballistic Tip should work fine.

I do like the 150 gr. WW powerpoints and the 150 gr Rem Corelokts, and they are cheap from Midway and grafs in bulk...I use them in my 99 Savage 308 and my pre 64 mod. 70 fwt in 30-06..They work equally well on deer and elk for that matter..Just good all around bullets..I use the 180s on elk and 150s on deer btw..

Shot placement matters much more than bullet type and brand.

There are very few bullets in suitable calibers that don't do well on Whitetails.

Use what is most accurate in your particular gun, make good shots , and the deer will die.

When I bought my first rifle (30-06)one "big" sales point was all the different weight ammo available for it. That sounded good. Practically it was a moot point. To me it would be a nightmare trying to remember which weight I was sighted in for and if not the one I wanted for the application, have to go sight in again. Easy solution. 150's shot good so it's 150's I use--deer, caribou, moose, antelope. Well I no longer live in Alaska so it's deer only, but I've stepped down to a .243 for them. A good cup and core in right place does the job. Dead is dead, there are no degrees to it.

Remington PSPCL corelokt, Hornady Interlocked, Sierra Game King, Speer hot core are all great deer bullets for deer up to 300 lbs or even more in rifles shooting 140 to 166 gr bullets at 2700 fps to 2850 fps.

This is true of 6.5, 7,mm & 308 cal.

Folks on this board get too hung up on calibers, cartridges, and bullets. Roll Eyes

Deer just ain't that hard to kill. Whistling

Even the 'minimum' cartridge your state allows for deer, assuming proper shot-placement, will typically be more than sufficient to put venison on the table after the hunt. tu2

I was having a discussion with the local game warden. He was telling me that he was investigating a nice buck that was killed.

The taxidermist called him and told him he found a 22lr bullet in it's brain.

I knew the shooter I told the warden he just most likely loaded some 22lr bullets into a 22 hornet and killed the deer with it. Thus making it a legal deer round.

Yes it can be done.
Any center fire .22 or bigger loaded in a rifle is a legal deer round in Wis.

I always wanted to make a 25acp carbine just to show how stupid these minimums caliber laws are.

If you set a caliber restriction some one well find a way around it.

One just has to look at Mi. In. to see how people are getting around theirs.

When I first started hunting in Wyoming the 150 gr. Speer out of my 30-06 did everything well except I never got one to exit on an elk. So I moved up to the 180 gr. Hotcor and then on to 180 Partitions. But for deer the 150 was one I used to say I hoped they never changed. You can still get them at Midsouthshooterssupply.com for good prices.
