It may not be everyones cup of tea but it would be pretty hard to get close enough to an elk without some bait. I'm usually against baiting anything except bears and wolves but in this case I have to say "good chucking."

If it would have been archery or anything else except a spear I'd say it's a chickenshit way of hunting.
