Ok, it is time for this old dog to try something new. I am going to skip scoping my Guide rifle and try an Aimpoint on the XS scout mount. The Aimpoint I want comes with either a 2moa or 4moa red dot. Which one is best for hunting? What is the best online source to order from? This could be a first step to also adding one to my S&W 500.

For a Guide gun I would go with a 4 minute dot.
It covers one inch at 25yds, 2 inches at 50, 4 inches at 100, 6 inches at 150 and 8 inches at 200.

I hope to have some input on this subject soon. I have an Aimpoint 9000 SC (newly introduced model) on order from Midway for $329.00. It's currently on backorder and their expected order from Aimpoint is supposed to arrive 10/21. I went with the 4 moa dot because this sight will serve dual duty between the .500 S&W and .475 BFR as a hunting sight. I've got a Warne base for the .500 and plan to use Warne quick detach rings so one expensive sight may serve both guns.

I got the Aimpoint today and I think I'm going to like it but the quick-detach rings were out of stock at Sportsmans Whse. so I got the regular Warne "maxima" 30 mm rings. One fits well and the other one is so tight that I can't rotate the sight even with the screws loose. The two halves don't line up very well and I'm not going to scuff up a new sight with what I now consider to be junk rings. They will be exchanged for a pair of Leupolds.

I had the 8 3/8" .500 S&W to the range today and came home happy. Here is what I ended up with ..........

Aimpoint 9000 SC 4 moa on a Warne base with Leupold medium height quick release rings. The Warne base has a front sight on it and the rear sight of the revolver is remounted on the base so low rings wouldn't work. The 350 gr. XTP bullets were loaded over 36.5 grains of H4227 for an Ave velocity of 1480 fps. Accuracy at 50 yards was outstanding and recoil not at all unpleasant. I tried 42 grains of Lil-Gun for 1700 fps but don't need that power level for whitetails.

I'm VERY impressed with the Aimpoint and 4 moa dot. Group sizes of 1" to 1 1/2" at 50 yards (using a pistol rest) were easy and my hitting was much improved using field positions. I still like my 2x Leupolds but my next optical sight will be another Aimpoint 9000 SC for a BFR .475.

I am ordering the S&W 500 from there Performance Center with the 6 1/2 in barrel and built in Weaver mount. I may add the Aimpoint to it as I added the Ultradot to my 617 (.22). I would be anxious to here if you have any problems with the Aimpoint on the 500. I did buy the XS scout mount for my Guide Rifle but still undecided what optics to add to it.

Just got my Aimpoint 9000sc yesterday. I got the 2 MOA dot and am pleased. The blade on my SRH 480 was too wide for me. I had a 357 with a much narrower blade which allowed me greater accuracy at longer distances. I was deciding between the 4 and 2 MOA and am glad I went with the 2. No problem picking up the smaller dot, and in daylight it has to be turned up at least half way to get a good contrast illumination. At that level the dot appears to enlarge somewhat. The techies at Aimpoint said the 9000 sc was designed with the large bore handguns in mind.
