Why not convert 44 mags to 440 Cor Bon's?

It would seem a good way to max out the power of a 44 mag pistol and you could just swap out a 44 mag cylinder back and forth. or do a rimmed version using 500 S&W brass and 440 Cor Bon dies.

If you wanted to keep it a 6 shot maybe a 480 Ruger case necked to 44.

Yes you dont need more power and the 44 is perfect ect...

Just thought it would be a great way to sling the 300 to 400 grain 44 bullets better.

Basicly try to get 500 JRH power without a barrel change, better SD and BC then swap back to 44 Mag with a cylinder swap for off the shelf ammo.

Yes the 500 JRH is perfect too...

Just a thought

Apparently your last post on the 410-500 got this started. boom stick, you're a crazy man! Wink

First off all the .440 Corbon is based on the 50AE case which is larger than the S&W 500 at the base. Which is also why they don't make carbide dies for the 50AE. The carbide ring is too thin to make without breaking. It can be done as a custom from RCBS but runs in the neighborhood of $300 for the sizing die along. Enough of that....

The chamber pressures you're talking about are high enough that you'd need a large frame 5 shot 44mag., does anyone make such a beast? None of the S&W 500's are 6 shot and neither are the BFR's, and for good reason. The cylinder walls on the 6 shots aren't thick enough for the size of the cases and pressures involved. IIRC the S&W 500 was proof tested at 90K psi. I think the perfect platform would be a BFR but they don't make a 44mag. If they did and it was the size of the 500, I'd say it's doable although the twist rate may be an issue if you decide to swap cylinders.

Look at the size of the cylinder Big Grin

Ok well the souce of actual size was pretty close so I figured whats a few thou on the base but I get your cylinder wall issue.

So I guess to K.I.S.S. and still keep a 6 shot maybe a 480 ruger/475 Linebaugh parent case necked to 44 would give a substantial case capacity advantage of 50 thou larger casehead for a more of a maximum revolver power on a smaller frame.
