Okay, here 'tis........

jwp475 and I went to Shady Grove, Florida this week to hunt piggies with an outfit called Florida Slam Outfitters. This was a free-ranging, fair chase boar hunt. It proved to be a tough hunt but well worth the effort. As some of you know, I have been itching to blood my .475 SRH and I finally got the opportunity. Took a 175-pounder with a shoulder shot at 80 yards after a long stalk. The hog went down like it had been hit with a ton of bricks.

Shot another one that we never recovered as it went into the really thick stuff and it was after 9:00 and nearly dark. It was mortally wonded and the offside shoulder was badly damaged. Bummer to lose the animal, but it happens unfortunately........

Here are some necropsy photos to illustrate the heavy damaged delivered by hardcast flat-nosed bullets. I shoot a 420 grain WFN that was designed by bfrshooter, that flies straight even at distance. I am very happy with the resuilts!

Here is the offside shoulder:

These are the two shoulders where you can clearly see the hole the WFN punched through.

And for more perspective as to the size of the hole, here is the shoulder with a .500 JRH round held up to it for comparison.

The two pistoleros........(but jwp cheated and used a rifle on the two hogs he shot! Big Grin)

Thanks Redhawk! Actually JWP had intended to do some handgun hunting, but decided that he wanted to do some long range hunting instead and that is exactly what he did! There will be a full hunt report on the hog hunting forum above.

I would love to own that funny little gun! That thing is badass! Don't forget that it has been thoroughly gone over by Jack Huntington.

The first 3 times out we were not able to get a decent opertunity with in handgun range, so I took a stand that covered a vast amount of distance with my rifle.

bfrshooter, I trust the 500 JRH very much as it is does a number on anything that it hits

Way to go Whitworth. thumb Sounds like you had a great time. I need to keep the name of that outfitter on file for future reference. We get to start chasing hogs again in about a month here in the N. GA Mtns. Have to use muzzleloaders though, so I will be using my Encore BP pistol.

Oh, and I really like the looks of your Redhawk. Who built it for you? Tell me more about the sight too, please sir.

Again, congratulations on what sounds like a very fun and exciting hunt!

Thank you Darrell! That is a fine hog you killed there!! Congratulations!

That is a Super Redhawk that started life as a .480 Ruger (bought it new when they just came into being), that I had converted o .475 Linebaugh with a 5-shot cylinder. Jack Huntington performed the conversion and he can be reached at 530/268-6877.

The sight system is an Ultradot 30. It's a red dot sight that doesn't amplify your target, but it certainly gives you a big advantage in low-light conditions! It was one of the best things I have ever bought. It will live through even the worst recoilers and it has a lifetime warranty. It was only $135.00 shipped. Check it out on www.ultradotwest.com

Whitworth, I have to agree, the Ultra-dot is great. I have one on my 500 Mag Encore, one on my BFR in 500 Mag and one on my new 410 GNR Encore. I have one that has well over 5000 rounds of heavy 500 mag pounding.

Congratulations on your hunt Whitworth,
Nice shooting, you must have enjoyed that; only I don’t think most of us could ever get that shooting and hunting itch quenched.

We don’t have hog’s here, and there’s no all year around open season on any thing here in NY. No hunting farms either. I’ll just have to occupy at the range and wait for fall. Frowner

But, Let me know when you start to BBQing that pig and I’ll drive down with the drink to Virginia for some eats, Big Grin

Oh, never mind, with gas at $4.45 a gallon I’ll just stay local and get a ham sandwich…maybe next time brother.
Thanks.

Good goin Whitworth ... I reciently met a man who has and uses a low # 500 Linebaugh he had built on a 357 Ruger frame .. He has nothing but praise for it so I may go with the 475 L , so I can make up a simular caliber rifle .... ie 470 Capstick ... or 470 AR ..

.........So here,s a question .. Of the several builders of 475 & 500 ,510 cal. revolvers ., which is the most affordable ???????? How do they compare to the Casul ??....... There is a huge difference between the 480 Ruger and the 500 Smith& Wesson , blast and recoil wise any way ?? ... But I,m kind of thinking about a single action . ??

For a quality factory offering, look no further than BFR. While the fit and finish won't be as nice as the Freedom Arms, the price difference more than makes up for it. A new BFR can be had for less than $900.00 and a premier grade FA will run you about $2300.00........ I won't get into the longer versus shorter cylinder argument here, but the BFR can be loaded with longer bullets that the FA.

Now, if the custom route is the way you want to go, I would look no further than Jack Huntington (530/268-6877). The .475 in it's commercial loading specifications is shorter than the original .475 Linebaugh and it has a smaller rim because of Jack Huntington trying to make it fit in the constraints of the FA revolver, so he is well versed in this cartridge to say the least. Plus, he's priced right and you will find the same quality from the likes of Hamilton Bowen. You can get the BFR in .500 JRH as well (JRH = Jack R. Huntington), which is also a wonderful cartridge for taking BIG game!

The .475 is a definite step up from the Casull. They kick hard loaded up. Loaded to .480 levels, they are much more pleasant to shoot, but even at 1,200 fps a 400 + grain bullet will get your attention. I have shot quite a few .500 Smith X-frames, and I think my custom .475 SRH is considerably more abusive on the shooter than the .500, but then agian, it's in a lighter platform and it has no compensator.

Yes the BFR would be a great way to step into a big bore handgun for a little bit of money.

The 500 Mag in the BFR is also a way to go, I have one and it is a very accurate gun. I am very pleased with the gun.
In my opinion there is a big difference between the blast of the 480 Ruger and my BFR 500 Mag and even my S&W 500 Mag. Compensated or not, the 500 mag loaded to the upper limits are a handful. The good thing is, in the lower limits of the load data, the 500 Mag still performs like a champ.

If you want to go by the way of a custom handgun, there are a few good custom gun makers out there. Just do a little research and find one that will make you happy. But expect to pay a lot more that a good BFR, about double if not more in price.

Gumboot,

I don't know what folks prices are currently, but Jack Huntington had quite reasonable prices in the past, and I've shot several gun's he built for a friend, he does great work.

I haven't shot an S&W 500 yet, but have put a fair number of rounds through various 454's, 457's, 500 Linebaughs in both SA's and DA's. For me I settled on the 480. The 480 feels just like a big 44 mag. The 475's and 500's have a signifigant increase in recoil. I still remember a range session where I was shooting my 480 390 gr @ 1170 fps, then shot my buddies 475 5 1/2" bisley over the same chrono, 410 gr @ 1210 fps and to me the recoil fealt doubled.

I simply can't handle the recoil of the bigger chamberings. I know I'm flinching based on the target, but I can't feel the flinch.

And how well you shoot a rifle and handle recoil has nothing to do with how you'll handle a handgun. My shooting buddy has had alot of the big boomer handguns, shoots them very well, but doesn't even like a .308 rifle. I've never been bothered by a 458 lott or my 500 Jeffrey, but in a handgun the 480 is my limit.

I figure if a .475" 400 gr @ 1200 fps isn't enough, I'll take a rifle. If you need more power, then go more power, like say 570 gr @ 2400 fps.

There is nothing that will walk away unscathed from a 1200 FPS 400 grain 475 cal projectile, in fact when well placed it will flatten them
