Just completed for me by Ron Jr (Ron Luebke Jr.) who does very fine work....next set which will be scrimmed on both sides is on the way. This one was done only on left so that it could be carried without little old ladies getting their panties in a wad.

Woodrow:

Well, I never claimed to be a saint, nor a priest (I like women, not boys.....sorry couldn't help myself Roll Eyes). I got hooked up with Ron Jr. when I just missed purchasing a knife he did the scrim on (it is the third one down on the left in the above link, Kious knife, George eng. and Ron Jr. scrim) by about 20 minutes. It sold for $3100 IIRC. Luckily 1911 ivory grips scrim,(I supply ivory grips) is much cheaper.

There are several scrimshanders who do good nudes and Ron, who is still learning and improving all the time, may not be the best YET but he's getting damn good and his lead times are short. It is damn hard to do a female face and make it look real and sexy at the same time. Two world class engravers who excel at it are Bonsi and Torcoli, both Italians. Ron Jr's scrim ain't far behind, and, like I said is getting better all the time. If you look close, it is easy to tell on the above page that some of the images are older and not quite as good, his newer stuff, like the knife and my grip panel are much better. Not that it matters but on that whole page, I think I like the "Santa" girl, the ribbon tree girl, and the girl sitting on the old rowboat best but then...there's the girl on the other Kious knife and....... dancing

Well, you have several options, he does other images, such as eagles and flags, or he can do a WWII "pin-up" type which would not involve nudity, your initials, plain or fancy, or he can even do a pic of your mom if that would work. Wink

Here is a link to ebay where he is selling scrimmed images of people from pics. Note that these images for that price are quite small, notice the quarter in the pic.

It is scrimshaw, a process where an image is scratched or dotted into the base material and the dots are filled with some kind of stain or ink. This process was developed by American whaler sailors in the 17th century. It is not some kind of decal if that's what you are thinking. For instance the image above, the one sided grip in my OP took him well over 30 hours of work to complete. There is a "how-to" book by Stevens which goes into detail about how it is done.

Not sure I understand, did you say you want a couple of naked ladies to grip? shame

The process is a secret, but it was revealed to me when I accidently stumbled into his studio as he was getting ready to make another set. Cool

First he hires a beautiful model and watches her carefully as she undresses to get ready to pose. This is necessary to be able to observe the flow of her body. The he has her lie down on the posing table and he takes a warm massage oil and slowly works over her whole body with it. This is necessary so he can examine and get a feel for the curves and musculature he will replicate on the piece he is working on. Eeker

And then he calls on his assistant, a pelado I know very well, to help her take off the oil and get dressed. There can be some trouble if Mr Johnson enters the room before she is fully clothed again. shocker

No, no need to thank me, but now you know how it is done. shame If you try to do this yourself..... lol

WoodrowS:

I didn't post this thread to sell anything, but really to give Ron Jr. some well deserved publicity. However, he had a couple of bites from people wanting to buy this last set (double sided one) before he finished them. I told him to sell them if he had a firm buyer and we'd split the profits. In the interim, he has put me on a scrim diet. Not surprisingly he has other customers that want his artwork, so I agreed to cut back to maybe one "something" of his a month.

BTW I am sort of joking, I was the one who suggested that he do this in order to 1) keep his other prior clients happy, 2) get new clients and 3) by doing work for others spread the knowledge of his talents around. I was and would be perfectly happy taking 100% of his output, but that wouldn't be the best move for his relatively new scrimshaw and engraving career. He really is improving all the time. Since the "bites" didn't come up with a firm commitment, and considering that I was not going to be getting a new set as often as I'd like, I told him to send this set on to me and they should be here in a day or so.

Bottom line, he said that he'd only sell this set for $1200 plus $15 shipping (that's my added shipping charge since I would send them registered, insured), which is a little more than they cost me, but is certainly not unreasonable. Ron has 68 hours work in this set (36 rt side, 32 left). If you or anyone wants them for that, PM me or email me and we'll go from there. Just to be clear, these are real elephant ivory grips (purchased by me from Boone's Trading Co (recommended) and shipped directly to Ron) and the artwork is completely hand done by Ron Luebke Jr. and will not be duplicated. Not that it matters to the buyer, but I'm still splitting the profit on these with Ron if I sell them. He ain't getting rich, has relocated cross country due to losing his job in this economy, has two teenagers, and I like him and his work. I told him he was working too cheap and to charge more (including me) but he said he was on the top end of what scrimshanders charge now, but that he takes more time and has more detail than most in each piece so his hourly rates are relatively low. This is pretty obvious if you compare his work with some others. I still think he should charge more. Personally I think his work will increase in value over time but that's not why I'm buying them. I'm buying them because I like 'em.

Like I said, they're available for now at the above price (I may change my mind after fondling them for a while) if anyone wants them. Woodrow has first dibs.

Woodrow, no harm, no foul, if you don't really want them, or they're more than you care to part with, just let me know. I certainly don't mind keeping them. Smiler

BTW here's a link to another friend of mine's knife selling site (Michael Donato, nice guy, and easy to work with) where he has a knife scrimmed by Ron for sale. For $1500 you get a nice knife and a good nude but, being objective, I think my 1911 grips are a much better value. But this is a nice grip.

Ron Jr. Knife Scrim

BTW I just want to point out for those who are new to knife buying that this is a pretty small knife, basically a gentleman's pocket knife. Because there is often nothing along with them to give some sense of scale, pics of anything on the net sometimes make the buyer assume a larger size than the item may actually be.
