Bobbed Super Redhawk

What do you guys think of a Target Gray "Alaskan"? Should I take the finish off so it looks more like a factory Alaskan?

Thats some fine work........you have given me an idea, I am going to do the same thing you have done but leave 1 1/2 inchs of barrel then PORT it. That will make one wicked lookin' Ruger. Thanks for the pics................JJ

Nicely done; wish I could drive a hacksaw half as well as you. I'd bob the barrel at 4 inches but that's just me. Using the XS front blade to preserve the use of the factory ringmount cuts will make your rig more flexible than the factory job. Good work.

Leave it grey!! I have 2 SRHs and I love the finish -- very unconventional!! Nice job, BTW!

What's the problem - they are still out there, just not in the local shop:

Search SRH 480 - 7 hits

How about this one? A like-new 480 for $399 (no box or rings) - that would be a hell of a deal even for a holster worn gun.

Used SRH 480 $399

There's a Canadian gunsmith who has a very sweet front rib that is available now to Canadian owners ONLY. A year ago, I tried to get him to agree to start offering them (in an untrimmed version for gunsmith installation using screws or solder) via the Internet for USA shooters, and, to the best of my knowledge, he never did anything about it.

You might email "Gunnar" and ask again:

http://armco-guns.com/

That's a 110 mm (4.3 inch) barrel.

I think if Brownell's carried those ribs, they would sell a ton and we would see a lot of bobbed SRHs. So just now I emailed Brownell's asking if they would pursue getting some of those ribs for their inventory... maybe we'll get lucky.

John, that's a tough looking SRH! I really like the rib. What great length to carry. Whenever I go hog hunting I strap on an SRH with a 7.5-inch barrel no matter what I'm hunting with. Makes for the sometimes necessary finishing shots!

I'd say leave it gray. Nice job.

How is the accuracy with your home crown?

Brownells sells some crown cutters that are hand driven and use a pilot to center in the bore. It would probably be cheaper to buy the crown tools then to send it out.
That's probably the only way to crown it now as pulling the barrel might be a real pain.
I have a set of the crowning tools and pilots and have done a few different rifle barrels. They all worked well and were fairly easy to do. There is a 90 deg cutter to face off the barrel flat and then an 11 deg target crown cutter and also a 45 deg for chamfering chambers in a cylinder.

I think if a person was going to try a home porting job, that it would be good to counter bore the barrel to remove the rifleing in that section of barrel. It would probably be best to not though unless you had access to some good equipment.

Nice job though, I like it.

Thanks, I think I'll leave the factory gray but maybe polish the trigger and hammer this winter when I tune the action.

I'm still screwing around with load testing, and haven't really sat down and tried for groups yet. I am chronographing different loads and will start doing some bullseye work soon. So far it seems pretty decent - though a little harder to hit the bull at 75 feet than with the long barrel.

I shot off about 90 rounds of various 400 gr loads this morning and my right thumb is a mite sore.... in spite of a steel reinforced thumb brace AND a gel glove.

AA9 looks real promising - I was getting 960 fps with a 400 gr LBT lead bullet and 22 grains of H110. With 18 grains of AA9, the STARTING load, I was getting an equal fps, and with 20 grains, nowhere near max, it's almost 100 fps faster. The short barrel definitely likes a faster powder.

I have those Brownell's tools bookmarked, but I doubt I will order them. I think the hand job will be satisfactory for a short range Bear Gun.

Thanks for the kind words.
