OK, seems like the handgun forum has all but died, so figured it might be interesting to know what your favorite hunting handgun and calibers are. And why. . . . .

Yup, saw it. The only thing I can say about it is: Come on guys, let's hear what you REALLY think!

I wanna shoot a .475. Have no idea what they are like. Wondering about they're long range capibility. You know, like busting rocks at about 200 yards or so. . . . . Anyone?

While I do truely love my .41 and .44s for hunting I have to admit the one handgun most used for hunting is my Ruger Single Six .32 H&R magnum. It is an original run with 6 1/2" barrel. Since I hunt and shoot far more small game with the .32 than big game with the .4/.44s the .32 is obviously my "favourite. However, if I am hunting big game with a handgun then the .41 Ruger Bisley with 7 1/2" barrel and a Burris FastFire II sight gets the nod.

It use to be the 44 in blackhawk or redhawk version, but for a while now its been the 45colt w/a 4 5/8 bl ironsights and 255,275,300,or 350 cast loads. And for the answer to your question the 475 will bust rocks just fine at 200yards.Like the others it can be loaded mild to wild.

Five gallon buckets at 300+ yards with either the .475 or .500 Linebaughs are fun, as are the 500 yard rams.

1976 vintage S&W M29-2, 8 3/8" barrel, Has several thousand raounds through it and shot the best group that I have ever shot with a hand gun...3 shots at 100 yards, off a bench, open sights, that you could cover with a 50 cent peice. (By off the bench I meant that I was resting my arms on a bench, no sand bags or any other type of rests other than my arms.)

I just stick my hand in the safe and ask which is the lucky .41Magnum this trip. For big, nasty creatures, my FA, Reeder, or Bowen built .475LB gets pulled from the safe.

Actually, he last few years of production of the 29-2 model, S&W had standardized the barrel length to 6" so there were quite a few manufactured. I have owned two or three of them. They are a lot more uncommon than the 6.5" version, but don't seem to bring as much.

My 475 and 500 Linebaugh's shoot wonderfully out to 200 yards and beyond. One of the places I shoot at in Idaho has gongs at 100 and 200 yards. Once the front sight elevation is figured out hits are fairly regular and quite apparent. And rocks on the bank are good too as the big slugs do let you know where you are hitting. I load to 1100 fps, maximum. Plenty.

I would have to say that my favorite is still my Ruger SRH 5-shot in .475 Linebaugh. It has a 7.5-inch barrel, and an Ultradot 30 on top. My standard load slings a 420 grain cast bullet at 1,350 fps and has accounted for a bundle of game.

I too play out past 200 yards with my .475. Not that unusual, really. The drop at those ranges is very predictable and consistent.

That said, I am really warming up to my BFR in .500 JRH!

Hmm! That is an interesting challenge but I am going to pass. The recoil is rather severe and I don't know where the gun would go!

My 8 3/8" model 57 that I had Jack Wiegand work over. It is sweet.

And damn Dave (onefunzr2), the way the rest of these guys are talking I was expecting you to say 150 yards or something. Smiler Nice shooting. Hell, I can't even see 600 yards...even in the daytime.

I use about all the calibers but my favorite is the 44mag and if i had to choose a gun it would be a toss up between my 4 inch 629 and my stainless 4 5/8s super. Nothing fancy with either of them but they shoot real well and put meat on the table.
