Anybody Chrono the 480 Ruger Alaskan? What loads?
Anybody know what kind of velocity I can expect?I got one coming and plan on doing the Factory Hornady 400XTP's and a Cast 400gr something?,maybe the Buff Bore 410gr at 1200....I guess I will lose a hundred or so,but thats not a problem as we all know what Big Heavy Cast bullets do in this velocity range!..The "Icing" for me is thats it all in a Compact 40 ounce lil backup rig high out of the way in a high ride back of my hip holster with 6 shots ready for Grizz! SAFARIKID, I haven't chrono'd any of the factory offerings for the .480, but I can tell you that 410 grain Buffalo Bore loading is hell on hogs! Forget the XTP loading -- you don't need an expanding bullet (it's already .475 caliber), you need penetration and the heavy hardcasts have penetration in spades.

You'll have to let us know what you come up with when you get it. I've only seen one and it wasn't for sale at the time.

My 4" 500 S&W shoots the Magtech 400JSP factory ammo at around 1200fps. The box says 1600fps.

I looked at the Buffalo Bore site and they show a 480 with 410gn at 1200fps.
I used Quickload, a 410gn cast and 296 to get 1200fps from a 7.5"bbl. With the barrel length down to 2" it was closer to 960fps.
I switched to 2400 and a compressed load at just below 50k showed 1100fps with the 2"bbl. It would be interesting to see what people are actually getting from the 480 Alaskan.

This is a picture of a Buffalo that I took with the 500 Linebaugh, shooting 525 grain WLFN flat point hardcast bullets at 1120 fps from my revolvers 6" barrel. The shot was from about 40 t 45 yards. When the bull presented an opportunity,I placed one round through the heart. The bull staggard, stumbled and went down. The others gathered around and begin hooking as if trying to help him up.they actualy got the big bull back to his feet, but he could not remain on all fours and quickly fell again. The entrance hole from the big slug, had blood flowing from it,as well as from the exit. The bullet exited the animal and was not recovered. The wound channel and penetration of these big bore revolvers is nothing short of amazing. The penetration is often more than large rifles and the wound channel has to be seen to be believed . Not much need for more speed
