I just got one also. I bought 6 boxes of the Hornady ammo and they shoot great. I can't wait to get reloading data and supplies. I would like to see some big bullet loads. Big Grin

Seems to me the heavy bullet loads equal average to medium-serious 45/70 rifle loads, which have been killing game just fine for 130 some years now. We'll have to wait to see what sort of deer medicine the goofy 200 @ 2300 load is destined to become. Good hunting!

My plan is to try the 200 gr. Hornady bullets on deer. I am sure they will work, the Muzzleloader sabots from Hornady use the same bullet but in 250 gr. and it is killing deer all the time.

As soon as you guys have done some shooting with your 460 post up a report. I'd like to hear some "first hand" reports on how it performs.

Thanks,

TH

hey i forgot where i got this but i have read it multiple times from multiple sources.

"A local sporting good store reported to SoldierTech that Smith & Wesson recommend having the barrels replaced by the factory for a $100 fee after only 1200 to 1400 rounds. This is due to the high-pressure gas cutting into the back end of the barrel. If the gun owner would ignore this problem, eventually the cylinder would also start to erode, causing all kinds of functionality problems.

This gas cutting issue could cause severe sales problems if people don't like to re-barrel so often. But even with the relatively short barrel life-span, in late April, Smith & Wesson announced that its new Model 460XVR received the 2005 "Handgun of the Year" award from the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence. "

corbon ammo for this thing is expensive! 1400 rounds at 60 bucks per 20! ouch!
hello reloading bench!

you can get them fairly short, well i mean 7 1/2 inches short anyway, thats pretty short for a 45-70 IMHO. the first time i held one i was pleasantly pleased with the way it felt in my hand.

but then again there is always the Thunder Five if you want a handy 45-70

I too am curious about the 460 xvr!!! My biggest curiosity is how lead bullets would react to the unique twist rate. I have seen a lot of the single actions, but having the souble action is a nice touch for a secondary arm.

For this gun ONLY! would it be acceptable to load 45LC UP to 44 mag pressures? I know it'd be safe to load the xvr down, but also more expensive... Any experience here?

Seeing as you are using a pistol that also chambers 454 Casull it makes sense that a fella could load the 45 Colt case to higher pressure, but as long as you are handloading I'd keep my inventory simple and cleaning easy and use 460 brass for everything.

I got my 460 xvr in feb 06. Managed to get out to the range once. Tried some 454 casulls and 460 mags at 25 yards. Gun is a good shooter.Didn't measure the groups. Ammo test: 454 casull with 250 gr xtp...300 gr xtp/mag's. 460 loads were 200 gr sst factory loads. All loads were grouping nicely. Planning to get back out this month. I'm working up a load or two for a Nov 06 hog hunt in Georgia. Enjoy your 460 xvr.. I Will.

I picked up both of those big smiths last weekend, the .500 and the .460. I definately like the .460 better of the two, but they are both awesome weapons.
I talked to the local gunsmith about that barrel change after so many rounds, he said he hadn't heard anything about that and with proper maintenance it shouldn't be a problem, even with the higher speed loads. he did mention the awards that it received and he didn't read anything about the barrel change then either.
I have had the BFR 45/70 for a while, and i love it. each one of these guns are wonderful, don't regret it one bit. recoil is not nearly what i would have thought on any of them, despite all the stories.
if youre the type that doesn't wear shooting glasses at the range, i would definately suggest getting a set before touching off that .460, the blast is pretty impressive.

The barrel change thing floating around is just another internet myth, "somebody who knows somebody or has a relative that works for, Etc"
