I would leave the gun as is and buy a Black Hawk!
Shoot the thing before going wild.

I have a Blackhawk. Big Grin

I am going to the range tonight and shoot it. If it shoots good like it is, it will stay as it is. If I cannot get it to shoot well with different loads, I will get the rear sight installed.

I found the ruger adj sight for les sthan 20 bucks on brownells. I can machine them in, no worries..

my goodness, 100 bucks for the rough country sights and then 200 more to install? LOL, okay, good on em.. those prices say "i have so much work that I have to keep up charging to keep my hours managable, thank you very much" .. and good on them for being able to charge that!

Get a blackhawk? You ever seen the hams i have for hands? I thought long and hard about it, and determined that, way back when, I could live with the groove sights, but I would pay and pay and pay to make a blackhawk into a vaquero with bisley grip and hammer.. so I bought a vaquero

i WISH i could have bought it with adj sights and a 3" barrel..

Well I shot the Vaquero Bisley last night. I did a bunch of shooting with some 200 gr. hard cast bullets. As I moved the target further the lower the rounds hit. It was shooting low even close 10 yards.

I then moved to my hot loaded 325 gr. hard cast bullets, and shot at 25 yards. My target has 2 of the 4 inch red circles. At 25 yards I kept all 6 rounds in the red circle. Not bad for the first time shooting it with my hot loads.

I once again shot the lighter 200 gr. bullets at 25 yards, and was about 6 inches lower than the hot loaded 325 gr. bullets. I am happy with the groups I was getting with the 325 gr. hard cast bullets. That is the load I will play with for a while.

I was only able to shoot at 25 yards, because that is as long as the indoor range is. I will have to get to the out door range, and see what it will do at 50 yards.

The only other thing I hate about going to the indoor range, I ended up buying another gun. A bottom feeder, Sig P6 in 9mm. I could not pass it up, $350.00 with two mag's and a holster. Also shot it. It shoots very good.

They also have a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt with a 4 5/8 inch barrel for $385 used, but in great shape. I need to stay away from the gun shops.

Boxhead, I was planning on doing a Super Redhawk conversion soon and I really like the case hardened frames. Sounds like you wouldn't recommend paying the additional $250-$300 for case-hardening?

Hold on. I have case-colored hardened sixguns that were done by Turnbull and they are fine. I am specifically referring to Ruger's "case color" paint jobs.

Damn sorry Boxhead, I only have Ruger's "case color" paint jobs.

I take care of my guns, and I don't have a problem with my CHEAP Ruger's "case color" paint jobs. Roll Eyes

I know a good bone case-colored hardened gun will last for just about forever. I had it on my Shiloh Sharps.
But for a cheap alternative, I don't see anything wrong with it. If taken care of properly it will last a while.

"if taken care of" ..??
what are you infering here?

Mine rode in the small of my back 3 or 4 days a month, in veg tanned leather, oiled each and every night, and then removed from the leather when i got home, and cleaned.

if the ruger vaquero bisley is USED the color case won't last

leave em in the safe, and shoot them once in awhile, sure must last.. but that's NOT "taking care of them" in my opinion.. if i can't use it, i sell it

I own more than one gun, I would have to have a belt with about 25 holster's to always carry all of them. Wink

Most of my big bore revolvers are my hunting rigs, not my carry rigs. I have not seen many bottom feed guns color case, so I don't have to worry about it.

If I did carry a hunting or back up rig all the time , it would be one of my stainless guns anyways.

Bisley Vaquero's are my favorite single action handguns...

I have 2 s/s 5.5" consecutive serial # Ruger Bisley Vaquero's in 45 Colt bought them with the redwood grip then bought black/gray laminate grips from Ruger for them.

I use these guns for Cowboy action shooting competitions and remote wilderness carry.

I load from light 200r RNFP's to 345gr Beartooth WLNGC's with 300gr XTP's I can hit an 10" X 8" paper target every shot at 100 yards when I do my part.

Excellent bullet proof handguns...

Here is a picture of them.

This is how I carry in the bush.

I was letting this post go for awhile to see if you got a good load working for you yet.
I do like those X grips on it, I have a few sets of Pats grips...he's a helluva nice guy.
I have grown to like my regular Vaqueros and blackhawks more than the Bisley...too much CAS I guess, although my main match guns are Open Tops with X grips.
I also took 45LC cases, cut them down and epoxied them in the hole where the Ruger crest is...they look pretty cool like that.

Yea I got a very good accurate heavy load for it. 325 gr. Hard cast bullets, 21.0 gr. of H 110. A stout load I must say.

I have been thinking of sending the gun off and have the cylinder done for a free wheeling, re-blueing with a vapor honed finish, and a few other goodies. But I will see how I feel in a few weeks.

I've led a sheltered life and don't have any single action revolvers. I notice that Hodgdon has different loading data for .45 Long Colt, one for "all others" and the other (hotter) for Ruger/TC/Freedom Arms. So, which Rugers are suitable for the hot loads? old Blackhawks only? Super Blackhawks? Redhawks? All? I'm talking .45 long colt only, not the magnums. TIA

The Ruger Blackhawk's,Super Blackhawk's, Ruger Vaquero (Old Model) and Redhawk's will take the hotter loads listed for Ruger loads.

The New Vaquero will not take the hot loads.
