Ok how is this? I do aim to please!

For practice ... try 17.0 gr Blue Dot behind a 158gr pistol projectile ... very cheap and very mild.
For hunting I'm still using up 4 boxes of Winchester 200gr factory loads ... then I'll swap to either the 225gr Nosler Partition or 225gr Sierra. For the really big stuff ... 37gr AR2208 (Varget) will push the 310gr Woodleigh out the barrel but wont stabilise in the 1:14" twist my rifle has. Quite mild in my rifle ... I plan on upping that last load to see what velocity I can get from the 310gr Woodleigh as a precursor to the 375-08 I'm building.

Well I'm going to assume that you are thinking about a load for shots under 150 yards. If that is the case then I'll share what I have settled for in my Mod 99-358. I don't use a scope on this one, it has a Williams receiver sight.
I like the Speer 250gr Spitzer over 45.0 grs. of H-335 and a Win primer.
Muzzle velocity is right around 2300 fps. from a 22" barrel.

The Speer bullet is very tough and being a spitzer, holds its velocity better than the round nose bullets so it hits a bit harder.
I've killed deer, bear, wild boar and elk with the Speer bullet and it works very well. Pretty good for a non-premium bullet.

The Sierra 225gr spitzer BT is a good bullet also but for some reason I couldn't get it to shoot better than the Speer bullet in my rifle.

Now if you wanted to go the premium route, I would suggest either the Nosler 225gr or the Nosler 250gr Partitions. You couldn't go wrong with these two.

exit wounds, stem to stern, on 180-250# pigs, routinly... never recovered one, and shoot mosa or better.

My BEST load for my original type BLR w/20" barrel was 51.5 grains of WW748 powder with a 250-grain Speer spitzer softpoint. This generated 2420 FPS, and gave 1 MOA groups, yet was still 1.5 grains under Ken Waters' max. load for that bullet in his mannlicher-Schoenauer .358 carbine.


This was in the days before Nosler started making .358-caliber Partition bullets. Today, I'd use the Nosler Partition of the same weight with that same powder charge. IMO, this load would be adequate for ANY North American game, including big bears.
