Keith, you might want to look at IMR Trail Boss. It's in this month's American Rifleman.

I have 5744 on hand, it has left unburned powder in the barrel. This is with 29.0gr and Lyman 515141 cast.

Got lots of Unique, IMR-4895.

What about 3031, a favorite for medium charges in large straight cases?

I'm working up loads for my 50-70. The loads with IMR4198. I wasn't getting accuracy until I worked up to 27 grains. That gave me 4 inch groups at 100 yards. Max book load is 30 grains but I haven't tried anything over 27 yet. I'm also getting decent accuracy with 3031 but also getting a lot of unburned powder left in the barrel. I have more loads of 3031, 4198 and 5744 loaded up for my next trip to the range, but I might not get there until after hunting season.

NONE! Use what it was designed for; it is better, safer, and a lot more fun.

Ditto, stick with black.

If you absolutely must try something else.............Blackhorn 209. It is a modern bulk smokeless.
