Hornady Custom Dies??

Dear All,

Rumour has it, that Hornady will make a (FL) die for you from a pair of cases fired in your chamber. Supposedly, you can specify the dimensions you want on your die (e.g. inside neck diamater to be able to size without an expander). I need a FL sizing die for my 8x64S, and would like to get a die, which I could use without an expander.

Have any of you used this service??

If so, would you care to share your experience??

Does anybody have a contact person/department in Hornady for such services??

Thanks a bunch for your help in advance.

- mike

I believe all of the major die manufactures will make you a custom die based on cases you send them. I'd just call the number on their web site; they should at least be able to direct you to the right person to talk to.

Since they have gone back to their threaded spindle I'd buy customs from Hornady.

Just call their toll free number 1-800-338-3220
and ask for engineering and tell them you want custom dies.

Alan Lenz is the guy I worked with .....not sure he's still there but try for him.

Ask for Lonnie Hummel. I used Hornady for custom dies for my 450-400, fair price, about 7 week turn around. Bob

I called Hornady, and it is indeed Lonnie Hummel who takes care of the custom dies. Ship to Lonnie at Hornady's regular address in Grand Island (NE): http://www.hornady.com/contact_us.php

Price for a custom die in a standard bore size (i.e. nothing too exotic...) is $100-$120 - plus shipping.

Hornady can hold production tolerances to around .001, so whatever dimensions you specify for your dies, you have to accept that tolerance on the actual dimensions of the finished die.

To have them make a die for you, either a reamer print or around 3 fired pieces of brass is what they need (plus any dimensions you'd like to specify).

Payment via credit card - or cheque (I guess?).

Delivery time: 6-8-? weeks.

Thanks a ton for pointing me in the right direction. There is an amazing amount of information available from you guys! cheers

They also make hydraluic dies, meaning no more fire forming.

Just put the case in the die, pound it with a soft hammer, and out pops either a Ackely improved case, or anything else you have specified.

That's a new one on me.....I could get excited about the 30 Gibbs if such a thing was available.
