"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

LOVE IT! Frankly, if someone reproduced that room today, down to the furniture, it would be one of the most hip retro style rooms around! Absolutely fabulous!

Very tastefully done. I especially like the floor. It looks like real slate. Is it? -TONY

Now THAT is a trophy room! I absolutely love the furniture, does it still exist? Also, one of the kudu looks especially outstanding to me, the first curl starts quite a bit past the end of the ear. Very nice.

Yes, it was slate. My grandfather was in the concrete business, and evidently it was quite rare to have slate flooring in those days.

I was quite young when they had that house, and just barely remember the trophy room. In one corner was a VERY large fish tank - several hundred gallons. I believe they kept bass in it from their fishing and hunting club that was next to the house.

Thanks Ann. They sold the house in the mid 70's, and most of the trophies were donated to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. My father has some of his trophies and my Grandfather's elephant tusks. Most of them were from their safari with Harry Selby, which I posted pictures of a couple of weeks ago. I am not sure what the kudu measured. I believe the sables were probably the "biggest" trophies - my Grandfather's was 47.5". The elephant was good as well, I think they were just over 70 lbs. a side, and very well matched.

I was just married and stationed in Europe in the late 60's, and Danish teak furniture was "in." That is the nice, clean look in these photo's. What a wonderful room and what wonderful memories your grandparents must have had of a safari with Selby. Thanks for sharing. Kudude

Thanks Charles, it's been a lot of fun going through all the old pictures. I am supposed to receive the final shipment of slides tomorrow, then on to the printed pictures. I am trying to figure out a good way to share them here - this started as a project for the family, but I am glad so many people on AR have enjoyed them as well!

Brant,

Great nostalgic photographs! They have the feel of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West.

Is your family from Ohio? It was the Cleveland Museum of Natural History that sparked my interest in taxidermy, as a small child. My mother would take us to University Circle, to the Art and Natural History Museums every summer. I would just sit in awe for hours, staring at the mounts, pondering over the magical art of taxidermy and allow the dioramas to take me to far off places. If time permits, I visit the museum when I go home. Was just there last summer and was amazed how so many of the mounts I remembered, like old friends. They looked as pristine as they did when I was a young child.

Thank you so much for sharing the photgraphs and stirring fond memories.

Kindest regards,
Mary
