woodsieRussian Hog...I think Not
So where would be a good place to go to shoot a Boar with "Eurasion" traits, that doesnt look like a farm pig.
I would love one for my trophy room.
Thanks in advance,
W.

WhitworthI've never shot a wild hog in the US that looked anything like a domestic pig, but most of the ferals I've shot didn't really look like a European hog either -- not in a strict sense. I'll dig up some pictures and show you what I mean. Stand by.........

DrHenleyHere are some "Russian Boar" at the Arrowhead Ranch in McAllen, TX.
The owner bought them to breed with his feral hogs to produce hybrids. He called them "Russian Boar" and that's all I can go by. He would not let me shoot them...

MuletrainSomewhere there is an article that says that the flatter the top of the skull is from back to front the more Russian a hog has. For exampe the photo of the skull posted above appears very flat so if this is true it has a lot of Russian strain.

dustofferThat's the skull of a feral hog I shot in La Salle County Tx (Cotulla area) several years ago (That's a 7mm Rem Mag cartridge in his mouth). He weighed 208 on the hoof and didn't exhibit the Russian characteristics like this one does (click to enlarge picture):
The one in the picture is not the same hog as the skull above.

MuletrainMaybe I have it backwards. The flatter the skull the less Russian the hog has.

SGraves155Muletrain, I think you got it right the first time. Flatter= more wilder

dustofferAccording to an article which was in one of the topics here, this was a cross--as evidenced by the small tooth just behind the tusks in the lower jaw. They are covered over with what looks like a wad of gum--but are small teeth. This hog was an old one too--probably at least 7 y.o. according to the aging criteria in the same article that had the info about the teeth. You can see from this pic that the teeth are worn nearly smooth, and he has one missing and one broken tooth. The small teeth behind the tusks are more visible here.

375 AIThe San Diego bloodline is most common on commerical operations. My understanding is that it traces back to Germany.
These are pure bred boar on a farm in Manitoba. They are raised there and sold to hunting facilities in the states.
