Several weeks ago we went on a hog hunt near Centerville Texas, it was on a friends farm where he wants us to do some hog control. With me from Ar was eyedoc and his brother dougiepoo. Three large boars were shot which was not unusual,,, the unusual part was one looked jut like a old russian boar,, all thing normal,, the second one eyedoc shot had only 3 legs. The fourth leg had been gone for a long time if it ever had one and this was a big pig as well. The last one was what we call Mule Footed,, the hooves were not split like a pigs is supposed to be, just one solid hoove, it sure made unusual tracks as well and this was by far the largest.
My question, has anyone else ever shot a pig whoose hooves were not split? The pigs family tree here in East Texas may not have many branches! drwes

I haven't but have heard from several sources that they have. Don't know how common it is but I suspect it's fairly rare.

If my memory is correct

I read that the first pigs the Spanish brought to the new world did not have split hooves. In Florida they were trying to save them . Anyone from Florida ??

I killed a big one about 25 yrs ago in Oklahoma. There was a farm years ago in Missouri that raised a mule-footed breed. The one I shot had almost wavy hair.

He was a big ole hog, over 300#, but his cutters missed his grinders (coming in from behind, rather than in-front), and that is why his cutters are so long. When this is the situation, the cutters are not sharpened, and can not cause as much harm as a smaller hog with sharp cutters.

Speaking of Florida.
I'd sure like some info about hogs around Cedar Key area. I've been invited down there for pigs and fishing mid July.

Anyone have some info about it? Sure would appreciate knowing.

I read an article a couple years ago about various domestic farm animals that weren't raised commercially anymore and as a result were in danger of going extinct, the mule footed hog was one of those! I've never seen or heard of any feral ones around here.

We hunt a ranch just a little north of there, and we have killed 20-25 mule footed hogs on that place in the last month or so. 20 years ago, you would see one every blue moon, seems to be more common in certain area's now days.
