Sometimes it pays off to have to take blood pressure meds.

Around 10:40 this morning, I got up to do just that and happened to look through the living room windows as I was uncapping the lids. We had some uninvited swine visitors west of the house, so I grabbed my .309 JDJ Contender carbine and lumbered out the back door, all-the-while hoping not to wake our dog, who’d surely take off after the hogs and spook them before I got a crack at them. The fence I needed to get to for a rest is just 5-6 steps from the north side of the house. From there, I noticed that two sows – about 190 yards from my position -- were in good alignment for a double, so I quickly sent a 150 grain Accubond downrange. The MV of this load is 2688 fps, and the bullet took the first hog squarely through the shoulders, exited and took the second sow right through the head, the entry neatly centered through the ear canal. The first sow spun and raced 20 yards before nose-diving into a small huisache and churning up a cloud of dust. The 2nd hog, as one would expect, dropped on the spot, the bullet exiting about two inches from the ear hole and killing it instantly.

I was thrilled with the double and began to walk towards my truck. I was planning on setting the gun inside of it while I figured out who I’d call to come over and pick up the fresh pork. I was halfways to the truck when another hog bolted from the brush, ran into an opening and then started walking slowly towards the nearest brushline. There was no time to get to the truck (to use it as a rest), so I wrapped the sling around my arm, took a deep breath or two and touched the trigger when all seemed well. The hog, which was only 175 yards or thereabouts, simply folded at the shot. The bullet nicked the liver and destroyed the lungs before exiting through the center of the opposite-side shoulder.

This was the first official blooding of the .309 JDJ, though in its previous life as a 30-30 AI, it may have killed a hoglet or 2.

The load I am using is 52 grains of N160 and the 150 grain Accubond for 2688 fps from the 23” barrel. The load is quite mild and even leaves a bit more soot on the necks than I would prefer, but it shoots exceptionally well. I had planned on trying 52.5 grains or even 53, but I just never seem to get around to my projects in a timely fashion. But I think this load will do just fine for now...

I ventilated a hoglet this morning around 7:30. Looked out and saw it limping badly alongside the driveway, so I sent a 150 grain Accubond from the .309 JDJ through its neck. This was a small hog, perhaps 20-25 pounds. It had a couple deep, oozing gashes on its right hip, smelled badly of infection and felt abnormally warm. While I hate to waste anything, this one went to the buzzards as it was not fit for human consumption.

Am guessing a tusk from another hog did the damage. Glad I happened to look out when I did as this was nothing but a mercy killing.
