Got tired of sitting in my bow stands seeing nothing but does, fawns, and immature bucks so I decided to go hog hunting one more time before wife and I take off on a short vacation. Two words describe the event: cold and windy. Yeah, I know, 40 degrees isn't cold for you guys up in Minnesota and Montana, Maine, Alaska, etc., but for a S. Tx guy, throw in a 10 mph wind in your face and it is chilly. And, if you can belive it, there is snow forecast for tomorrow!! But, had my sleeping bag with arms and legs (insulated jump suit)and a thermos of coffee so it wasn't bad at all. Long sit however--got on stand at 7:20, feeder went off at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 with no action. I had decided I'd get down at 11:00 originally, but had backed off to 10:30, and at 10:10 two large black shapes came thru the fence into the pasture. I got ready, but it was premature--they stood and looked at the feeder for 10 minutes before one finally came into the pen, followed by the other (do you think they've been shot at before at feeders?). The winds were from the NE so I was in my bow stand, 20 yds away up in a large oak, with my 12-ga and #4 buck up the spout. I was going to let them both get under the feeder and if they got their heads together I was going to try and pop 'em both. However, one was very aggressive and would hardly let the other close to the feeder, so I ended her aggressive streak with a bang. #4 buck at 20 yds does a number on a pig's head. Nice fat sow, about 120-130 lbs (my estimate). I loaded her on the tailgate, drove to the back fenceline and gutted and de-capitated her, and now she's rinsed and hanging in my shed for delivery tomorrow (bowhunting buddy asked for a pig to make sausage with--and someone had to shoot one for him Dang the bad luck, it had to be me). Oh, and by the way, it was a "5 with one shot" as she had 4 in the oven. Landowner is most happy. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

I've got 3 tags left but need to go back to my buddy's place (does are legal in his county and there are no antler restrictions on bucks). One strange thing about the place I'm hunting--have only one picture of a lone spike since I put the cameras out in August--lots of little 6's and 8's but no spikes. Maybe that means more shooter bucks in the future? An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

My three year old thinks Al Gore is a moron. He's seen every bit as much snow in South Louisiana as I have, since it has only snowed/sleeted here for the last two winters out of the last 35 or so. I don't think we're wimps though, Bob. Cold temps and high humidity chill to the bone no matter the latitude. The dryer cold up north isn't nearly as bad, to me at least. That being said, -20 is too friggin cold no matter what the humidity.

Dry cold/dry heat not as bad? Reminds me of my aunt & uncle that lived in Phoenix, AZ. Was visiting them in '71 and they insisted that you didn't feel the dry heat like the humid heat at home (SE Mo.) I had a legit protest when I literally blistered the back of my hand with the seatbelt buckle in the car!!!! 115 is hot--whether the humidity is 40% or 90%. However--I'll be back on stand (bow for WTD or gun for pigs) as soon as I get back from vacation. Only thing that keeps me off the stand is rain. I hear some of you southern boys like to fish a little, fresh water, salt water whatever, bring your rods up here to northern Minnesota in about two months. We'll supply the bait, the auger and the 3 1/2 feet of ice to cut through. You'll have fun, really, I promise. Barry
