Has anyone ever tried and had success calling hogs?

I sat out one night with my Foxpro Shockwave and played a baby pig in distress. I ended up shooting a big boar at 244 yards with a thermal, that was just passing through the mesquite.

I'm not sure the call was what bought him through, because he never came very close and didn't seem to show any interest. I was just lucky enough to be in a 15' tall blind that could look out on a mesquite strewn hill side, when he meandered through.

Has anyone actually tried calling them and had success? I could see a boar being territorial and being triggered to investigate with the right call.

i bought a hog call as a gas, just to try it.. i think it was $35... dark green with 6 or 8 different calls on it ... used it in piggy woods... or at the edge of woods while fishing .. never felt that I called one in... but it was amusing .. i think it's still in an old hunting bag

That link refers to a guy I was going to mention - Glenn Guess. He calls hogs.

The best use of one was a friend who would use one stalking them.

He said it allowed him to get closer.

I have stalked and have shot several with in 5 feet or so. with out one.

So I don't know if it worked or not.

I have not used hog calls per se (or not that I remember ha ha), but about 25 years ago I did have a boar of about 140 pounds respond to fawn bleats when I was calling coyotes.

A load of #4 buckshot (3"/41 pellets) from 20 yards dropped him on the spot.
