100% Deet
Where would I get 100% Deet for a trip to Tanzania in two weeks? Thanks.

Walmart carries it, but you don't need 100%. The 29% Repel brand did me just fine in Tanzania last year, but they also make 100% if you want it. In addition is comes in a pump spray bottle that is pocket size. Good luck on your hunt.

I believe there have been studies that show a concentration of about 35% is all you need. The best stuff I have used is Ultrathon.

Anything over 30% is a waste. I work with mozzies all the time. Repel and frizz work just fine and they are 20-30% active. More is not always better.

I bought a bunch at Sportsmans Warehouse for Tanzania this year. Sawyer brand. Sportsman's should have it.

Works great for the skeeters. We used Avon Skin-So-Soft for the tse-tse's but I am not convinced it worked.

I did a bunch of research on DEET recently. The 30% is said to be as effective as the 100% products, however the 100% products supposedly need only be reapplied after 8-10 hours while the 30% products recommend 4-6 hours.

All I know is the stuff we had was 100% and it worked very well.

I use a 100% DEET solution sold as "Ben's".

Don't remember where I got it, but just Google it and you'll likely find some mail order retailers.

Just have them FedEx it if time is short.

Ben's is what you're looking for if you want the high deet content, though I'm not sure what good it will do you in Tanzania. If you thinking about it for tsetse flies, I think you'll be disappointed.
I have used Ben's but got it for the hordes of skeeters in Alaska. It works great there.

If you use 100% DEET don't touch neoprene, goretex, tents, nylon, synthetic gear, plastic camera bodies or anything similar right after application - it melts it! Its bad stuff, 30 is more than enough toxin on your skin and enough repellent!

100% DEET is available at Cabela's

100% works better than lesser concentrations for me.

MJines.....Muskol brand 100% Deet is available at Gander Mountain. Never been to Africa. But up here in Minnesota, where the mosquito is the state bird, you better use the strongest stuff you can get. (Did I mention Black flies?)
Repel, Deepwoods Off, Cutter, hell, even Raid, our mosquitos eat that wimpy stuff like candy! Kayaker, apparently, you never been to Minnesota. Up here, we need all the toxins we can get!
Seriously, if it's hot, and I suppose it will be in Africa, the weak stuff sweats off in a few minutes. The 100% stuff lasts a little longer.........Grant.

I used to use Ben's a lot when working in the bush. Good stuff, but not really worth the bother. It melts most plastic and synthetics, and when the sweat is rolling off you it lasts no longer than the lower strength stuff that doesn't taste as bad, sting the eyes as much or hurt when it gets into a cut. I actually stopped using it before it was banned in Canada.

Ditto on the above - it melyed the top coating off my dashboard on my brand new truck when I smeared it on there by mistake.

One evening I got the bright idea to spray DEET on my gladiolas to keep the goats from eating them. The next morning every gladiola was dead and withered. I'm a little leary of the stuff. The goats were smart enough not to get near the stuff.

Seems to me that at one point there were claims of health hazzards associated with this stuff and that especially children should avoid it, but that seems to have kind of dissapeared. I guess its probably more hazardous to your health to get bitten by a mosquito.

Everyone is probably correct about not needing agreater concentration than 35%; however, I use the 100% and have for years. You can buy it online from Brigade Quartermasters
