FYI to anyone shipping animals out of or through RSA
I just received an email from Leandre in Debbie Peake's office saying that animals coming from or in transit through South Africa need to receive a "letter of no objection" from the country where the animals are being shipped to due to an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease.

So - Basically if you have any skins coming from Bots or Zim that are being shipped through RSA, you must first get a letter of no objection from your home country before they can be shipped.

It would be my assumption that the USFWS will not likely sign one of these consent forms until the outbreak is contained given their mandatory policies on getting swine dipped upon entry. I know my trophies from Botswana are not able to be shipped yet because of the elephant skin in the shipment.

Anyone else have any specifics? This is all I have at the moment.

If someone knows how to post a PDF file on here, I can send them the form I received.

Ummmm....sounds like my animals from Zambia that are currently being done by my taxidermy/hunting friend in RSA may get caught up in this!?

Tom, not sure if the animals already tanned will be affected, it may just be the dry salted skins that are affected.

I suspect Greg in spot on with regards to tanned or mounted trophies. Those shipped "green salted" (flint) will cause the problems.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

butchloc,

that is how a bureaucracy works! Get a job and an office. Then find more things your office needs to be involved in to justify more funding and office space, and staffing. That's where you get the second secretary with red hair and big boobs. At least that's how hillary did it.

The name of "those people" is USFWS!
No Cheetah, no black faced Impala, no polar bear, no Ele from ZAM in years past, no PAC Ele, no MOZ Ele, etc....the USFWS is ensuring the extinction of a variety of species by being PC!!

UPDATE - I just spoke with a shipping agent in RSA. He said the trophies ARE moving right now, they have had no problems with trophies being turned away as of yet (to any countries), but the USFWS is aware of the problem and are deliberating on what they are going to do, if anything at all.

It basically boils down to if the host country accepts the dipping and packing process used as a means of eliminating the disease. If done correctly, it does eliminate foot and mouth so everyone should be fine, at least for the time being.
