just a question for the group. I have been quiet for a couple of years but did my first trip to SA. I am now looking at going back in 2025. I have been talking to Jumbo about Mozambique for Buff/Leopard. Anyone have any thoughts?

The Niassa Reserve is magic. Another outfit to look into for comparison is Luwire with Derek Littleton and/or David Langerman. Their anti-poaching efforts are impressive.

Never hunted with him. However, when Phillip Smythe was killed , Jimbo and his partners donated a Botswana buff hunt which was raffled off for the benefit of the widow . That says something to me .

I hunted with his outfit in Mozambique. Not him personally.
One of the best hunts i have ever been on.
The camp is unbelievable for a wilderness hunt.

Great hunt, Ph and game quantity

Thanks for the vote of confidence. We have decided to forgo the leopard as my new wife will be coming along and want to cut down on the pressure and blind time. We are discussing doing 10 days for CB and plains game along with an extra day of bird shooting. I am not sure if Jumbo will be my PH or one of his guys. Part of me feels that i should shop a bit but I feel very confident after a couple of phone calls. I guess I am just here to put my mind at ease.

Might want to re think the leopard.
The place is overrun with them.
I killed mine on day 2.
We had 3 hits the first night.
Sat for 2 hours and shot one.
When we went back the next day to cut down the baits and remove the blind, the camera showed another cat hit the bait after we killed the first one.

Interesting. Skipping leopard was Jumbo's suggestion. His thought was we could take the pressure off and with the saved trophy fees add red duiker and sable. Apparently he has a beach house on the Indian Ocean, we were going to do about 3 nights there at the tail end to round out our 14 days in country.

Friends who have hunted with Jumbo and his Niassa concession have all given it great reviews. My conversations with Jumbo have been good as well although I haven't talked to him since the Stu Taylor incident.

Sometime, maybe eight to ten years ago, I heard that there was a fallout between Jumbo and Stu, and Jumbo wouldn't let Stu back after he was shot. Since that time I have avoided discussing a hunt with Jumbo. Perhaps I am misinformed regarding the situation, if so, could someone clarify it for me.

I'm not wanting to stir the pot, just want to clarify if what I had heard was correct or not. Perhaps I am unfairly judging Jumbo.

Do you see this as a potential problem in booking with Jumbo? What is the Stu Taylor situation?

Frankly, no I don't. Post was just cryptic and I was curious. at face value someone having a falling out with someone else nearly a decade ago is hardly a reason to not do business with them. I think im a pretty good guy and I have had professional disagreements like most of us here have. Just making sure I wasn't missing something more worrisome.

There is a thread(s) on this forum that deals with this incident from ten or so years ago if you want to research it. You can probably spend a good part of the day reading the details if you wish.

If there is an outfitter who hires a ph. That ph is accidentally shot by a client. After two years of rehab the ph is fit and ready to go back to work but the outfitter will not rehire him. (That is what I was told happened by a third party.) If that is the actual details, then I personally have a problem with and will not hunt with that outfitter, regardless of how good he is.

There are plenty of details to this story to which I have no knowledge. Thus my question for clarification to see if others can share more light. Perhaps what I was told is not the full story. "Perhaps I am unfairly judging Jumbo." Thus far, no one has made any clarification, which in my mind means either what I was told is correct or none of the regulars here know the full story, or they know the story but choose not to share it.

PS: Jumbo did donate a hunt with the proceeds going to Stu. I commend him for that! He probably did other things to help that I am completely unaware of as well.

Stu Taylor was accidentally shot by a client, Tim Herald, in 2013. Recover has been slow but I believe he is working again. A lot of money was raised to help him. You can do a search on this and see the details.
Larry Shores has a lot of info on this incident.

He absolutely donated a hunt to benefit the family of Phillip Smythe. I do not recall the hunt for Stu. My aging memory may be the issue.

You made me question my memory as well. A quick search brought these up. I don't remember or never knew the results of the auction and don't remember reading a hunting report. It does look like the word was spread to the African hunting community pretty well.

Hunted with Kambaco Safaries many times and will go again in Oct.. Jumbo is a good friend and great PH..His staff I know very well and they are very accomplished PH's..Had 5 leopards on bait the first two days and shot a very fine one. Have enjoyed several safaris in all his camps and highly recommend them..This area has many leopards and we only sat one blind for less than 4 hrs..Tis is a truly a iconic area..John

L7 is I believe larger than the area next door and I would highly recommend David Langerman to hunt the Luwire area which Derek Littleton controls. Their anti poaching efforts have made their area the best out of the blocks within the reserve.

Other outfitters hunt the L7 borders as that area is so good. Bird hunting is not something I would associate with the Niassa. If you have not taken a Leopard then L7 is the place as daylight and very high percentage.

There might be some claiming 100% success rates on Buffalo and Leopard but if they tell you that look at someone else. Nothing in life is 100%.

Then add Grant Taylor with Mashambanzou Safaris to the list as well. 2 adjoining blocks in the Niassa Reserve. One block (L2) adjoins the aforementioned L7.

Milking an old man's memory from just reading about this.

Wasn't Stu shot thru the shoulder with a big bore?

Thank you, hope he is doing well without
major problems left over.
