Yep this is a real shame. I hope they are recovered and returned to you, John. Always hate to hear when this happens to anyone but especially a good friend and excellent artist.

Wow!!!

My good friends John Tolmay and his lovely wife Di are salt of the earth people and live off revenue from John’s sculptures.

Not only that John is a former PH and one of us.

That someone from our midst stooped to this level is appalling.

I certainly hope they are caught.

The Convention hall must surely have a CCTV system with recorded playback in its servers from which images can be retrieved.

I suggest scrutinizing footage of the main entrance (if there was a cam covering your booth, so much the better) to try to identify the "curious" individual who took unauthorized photos.

On a separate thread there is a mention of a "pre-registration" process which suggests anyone entering the hall must identify themselves as a bona-fide visitor.

John,

I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you get your property back. I can't imagine someone stealing Black Powder. I have one and it's all I can do to move. Wonderful piece. Hope you get it back but with serial numbers, not sure how the thieves can sell it.

The convention center does not have cctv in the exhibit halls, some exhibitors do have cameras, most do not. Earlier posts seem to indicate the theft took place from a truck bed ( not sure, though), there might have been a couple of DPD portable tower cameras down at the exhibitor lot, I think I saw some. The photos in the provided link have been sent to a friend at DPD to be given to the guys that check pawn shops, might help.

Unbelievable that DSC took no measures to install a handful of cameras at the main entrance and/or registration area.

Granted that one cannot expect CCTV to have been in the loading zone but certainly should have had a few at main entrance where the "roving cameraman" might have been picked up on tape, identified (must have been wearing a Pass) and
contacted for further assistance.

Who knows, he might even be present at the forthcoming SCI fling.

Stolen works of art have private buyers and never end up in public view within a pawn shop.

Checking Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace in the area might not be a bad idea either.

In the same parking lot, 20 suppressors and 3 rifles were stolen. Several thefts around A Loft.
DPD convention liaison was unaware of the bronze theft, was it reported to DPD?

IF the picture taker is the guilty party, rest assured those pieces were "pre-sold". I have read that much stolen high end artwork leaves the country. IF you can get a picture of the suspect the FBI and Interpol should be consulted.

Am I reading this right ? This was stolen outside the show from a parking lot ?

If so , it seems to me that any inference of negligence at the show is simply wrong .

I don't think anyone is inferring that the show is responsible. They may have photos of the suspect and that would be a great help for law enforcement.

Would believe that it was the effort of professionals. Happens at jewelry shows, coin shows and, yes, gun shows.

Several years ago Kirk Bryant of Shiloh Sharps was leaving the St. Louis NRA show. We had dinner and he drove off to reach Kansas City for the night. Thieves followed him all the way and broke into his trailer at night stealing many rifles which, to my understanding, are still missing. They did make an arrest of an individual who was in possession of his .45 semi-auto. I suggested at future shows to replace breach-blocks with solid non-functioning blocks. Anyone looking to replace will have to give the serial number of their rifle.

Always be vigilant.

The Suppressors in the quantity that were taken, I have questioned why they would have that many at the convention. Approval for an individual is months if not a year away before you are able to take possession. All that would be needed is the companys different versions that would be stamped demo only, they are not a working suppressor.

On the Rifles, again, the bolts should have been removed and stored in another container. I am assuming that the stolen rifles were bolt action rifles.

Bronze Africa,

Your art work is outstanding. I enjoyed our brief chat.

as mentioned, recovery of your lost works will be rare. if they have not been recovered by this time I doubt that they will.

Did not get a picture of 'the suspicious individual' as nothing like this has ever happened and we certainly did not expect anything like this to happen. Perhaps we will have some news from the security department at DSC this week? Will be following up to find out if there were cameras in that parking lot.

In this day and age, leaving anything in a vehicle unattended is just asking for it to be stolen. The hood rats have gotten very smart and bold with smash and grabs.

I got smash and grabbed at a Cavender's Western Store in Houston at 3:30 in the afternoon, 1 row back from the front door. Ran in the store for less then 10 minutes.

Watched the security cam footage, they were on my truck 30 seconds after I walked away from it, took a spring loaded center punch to bust the rear passenger window. Hood rat climbed in and started handing stuff out to his buddy. Third hood rat was driving their car. Gone in under a minute.

There was a parking lot full of people that watched it, but in this day and age nobody wants to get involved. I couldn't even get the police to stop by to make a report.

I leave nothing in my vehicle anymore.

There is no way any private organization could afford to provide camera coverage of all of the public lots around the convention center, there are dozens of large and small parking lots within a very few blocks. There is/was a “secure lot” a block from the convention center for exhibitors, it had DPD officers providing security as well as a few volunteers.
The City of Dallas does have cameras along Young St, Lamar and nearby streets (including one at the corner of Lamar and Cerimonial Dr, right by the parking lot in question). Would they spend the time to try and see these break ins? I doubt it, but they might. Haven’t heard of any vehicle being stolen but there are always a couple that get stolen.

A year ago my Ram was stolen from in front of the house under a bright LED streetlight.
Neighbor's camera caught it all.
Too far to ID the thief.

Door was locked, truck was driving away in 23 seconds from the time he grabbed the door handle
with the first motion.

Since then I have wondered if the door lock may have been prepped prior to entry.

Thieves doing this shit Know what they are doing.

I put a Ravelco kill switch plug on my 2020 F250. I frequently travel and my truck has been "probed" a number of times in hotel parking lots. $650 installed.

We have very little theft here.

But we have GPS trackers on all our vehicles.

Costs roughly $100 a year for live display on an app.

Works great.

Has a 3 month past history stored too.

In England it is very hard to insure Rangerovers.

Because of so much theft and ease of getting into them.
