Do we "embellish the tale" or the size of our trophies just like fishermen recount about the "one that got away"??

Below are pics of 2 lions, a 9.5 yrs old and a 14+ yr old. These are known aged lions from the Ngorongoro ecosystem in Tanzania. I post these because i've recently read hunt reports here on AR where the hunter claimed his lion was 12 yrs old as judged by the PH when it appeared quite lacking in physical "aged features" that become very evident in lion over 8-9 years old.

9.5 year old

14+ year old

You don't really need the lions to make that point!

Oh I don't know. Maybe I have exaggerated the measurements of my own "attributes" at times...

Mich,

Of course the answer to the question is yes and I'm sure you know that. What are you really asking?

I initiated a similar discussion here some time ago. A former friend of mine spent a good bit of time in Africa starting a decade or so ago. He now books the occasional hunt and is in the "outdoor trade". His six month initial stay on the continent and two or three subsequent safaris have become magically transformed into stories of his "living in Africa for a few years", managing a farm there, taking most every trophy the continent has to offer, and (most recently) having PTSD from "engaging in a gun battle with poachers". There is something quite sad about people who lead quite enviable lives STILL feeling the need to lie. I guess it is one thing to embellish in a good natured way among friends....but some of these guys embellish around clients who are convinced that they are capable of offering good advice. To me, that is just shady business.

I would never tell a lie.

But I don't let facts get in the way of a good story...

Yes. When fishermen don't fish, they fight...

No.
Fishermen want to take the largest fish with the smallest tackle.
Hunters want to take the largest game with the largest gun.

I am a hunter, and not a fisherman. I only like to do what I am good at doing.

And I cannot lie well enough to be a good fisherman. Wink

Now I'm thinking about my marlin that shook the hook Mad Yes that one that got away was the best fish of my life. The bull Dorado I caught did help make up for it a bit.

I think there are more hunters who obsess over the smallest caliber they can get by with, then there are who just find the largest thing they can handle and let it go at that.

Maybe but not here! Cool

But on the other hand there are all these trophy shots where the hunter sits well behind the animal to make it look enormous in comparison...
