Steve - No, never been in a gyro, though have been around them. They are expensive though, and while very popular in RSA, not even one in Zim yet.

Thanks to my travels with the magazine, I have been fortunate to sit in a couple of choppers during game capture operations. The first time, I screamed like a girl, even though being a seasoned fixed wing pilot. I imagine Gyro-copters give a similar versatility. Would love to try.

I enjoy flying choppers as well and the feeling you get when landing one is an absolute delight but a gyro is even more fun that a chopper so try to give it a go if you get the chance. Smiler tu2

I like to fly fish for trout and salt-water fish the Texas Bays. Heading down to Rockport with family and Mom and Dad next week. And...when I am feeling in my 30's...I like to take the mules and pack into the mountains for an elk hunt or to fly fish. I like to do anything done "cowboy style".

But in regards to giving up hunting and guns all I got to say is read my tagline. I feel just like Billy!

P.S. We have more gun rights today than we did 30 years ago here in the US.

I love to fish red snapper offshore. However the Federal government has ruined that also with a ridiculous nine day long season. We made one trip this year.

Bring a kid fishing and hunting. Our future depends on it.

Mike, I am not a big fly-fisher and struggle to wield the heavier weight rods best for tiger, but not many know that the Zambezi - especially the middle section between Kariba and Kanyemba - is great on fly. I know a couple of serious guides down at Chirundu who hit it big in the winter months down there. It is quite something to watch them work their magic, and when those fish hit, it really is like hooking into a freight train. Great fun if you down there hunting with a bit of evening time to kill.

Things to do.

When I retired my wife asked me what i had planned to do in retirement.

I looked at her and let her know that my plans were to:
1. Hunt more often
Upland & Some big game
2. Fish more often
2 trips a year - with friends wanting me to go on other trips.
3. Trap Shooting.
I am thinking i will give this sport a better go next target year and try and make the All American team. I have been getting my eyes fixed...been having issues for the past few years and my new DR. seems to have my issues taken care of. I will know in September if i need a little laser surgery to make some small adjustments.
4. Travel
My wife would like to travel to Canada -Australia - New Zealand - Ireland - France - Scotland - England - Spain - I was looking at going to the Ukraine (that off now - grand mothers family came from their) and we should be able to travel as we get older.
5. Hunt
I would like to go hunting in New Zealand - Australia - Canada - Alaska (take some of the grand kids bear hunting) Namibia - Mozambique - Zambia - Argentina

I currently budget 1 to 4 of these items and a long as one health holds out i have something to look forward to doing with friends.

I got news for you Buzz, Havana WAS westernized, in the best possible way, all the amenities of the west coupled with the island life-style. The of course the communists (we call them democrats here in the States) took over and now it's nothing but a third world shithole. The fishing is still good, but nevertheless a shithole it is.. j

I am also a fanatical fly fisherman and have been so for over 40 years. I have fly rods from the small 4 1/2 foot ultra lights (00 lines) to 13 1/2 foot spey rods and everything in between. Salmon and steelhead for me in the big rivers of the Pacific Northwest, is one of my ultimate turn ons. I also love photography, bird hunting, traveling the world, reading, mastering a big garden when possible, and gardening in general. One of my other "hobbies" (and the most important one) is 9 children and 6 grandchildren. They will keep you hopping! tu2 LOL! For what it's worth, I sincerely believe that there would be an armed revolution in this country before gun owners would give up their guns. Sorry, but, with the Second Amendment, this isn't Australia or England. stir Just my own humble opinion. Big Grin

I used to fish pretty often but when my middle son and his buddies graduated from high school I looked around and found that all of my fishing gear had disappeared! I think they used it all up and good for them. I haven't gotten around to replacing it except for a light spinning rig to snag a few perch now and then. I enjoy shooting, but it's a drive to get to a good range. Nowadays I play a fair amount of golf (I hear the boos from the crowd now) but in my defense I'm not any good at it and we walk, so I stay in decent shape. My plan is to book the buff hunt, put my rifle sling on my golf bag and walk myself into hunting shape.
Other than that, I am a guns and hunting magazine loony. If I can't be out doing it, I like to read about it.
Everybody have a great weekend and do something fun.

Trout fishing for fun, panfish for food-- especially during the winter. I do a lot of deer, turkey and waterfowl hunting near home, usually a Western hunt with family as well. We have a garden that never seems to get enough attention. I read a great deal, mostly history books. I also do a lot of volunteer work-- school board, coaching high school Mock Trial, co-chair for my chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, church council. The volunteer work alone amounts to several hundred hours a year.

By the way, yesterday, a good friend of mine, Cecil Fredi, who has retired from safari and big game hunting, gave me a copy of a magazine called " Rod & Gun", which was "Sports Afield's Quarterly for Active Sportsmen". It is from the Spring of 1970. One of the articles in it is entitled: "Safari Now". The subtitle of the article states: "Five years from now, who knows what will happen to Africa's rich gamelands". This issue has been going on forever.

Besides hunting, I have many interests and hobbies. However, having had six heart attacks and a stroke have slowed me down quite a bit.

When I'm not slowly chasing whitetails and turkeys, I predator hunt a bit, fish for bass and catfish on Kentucky Lake, reload some ammo (.223, .25-06 & 9mm), ride my Harley Softail, go to car shows with a pinstriper friend and enjoy a fine whiskey or two in the evening....

Good thread Steve!!

African hunting for Joyce and I is simply an added adventure. Seeing a different part of the world while having a very up close intimate interaction with it via hunting. I suspect I would not enjoy a large photo Safari setting. We enjoyed Etosha but at the same time not the crush of people doing silly things at the lighted waterholes.

As far as what else we may enjoy that list is far too long. We've enjoyed life as a team for forty years and since Joyce recently kicked cancers ass we plan on enjoying the journey with a renewed appreciation and vigor.

Joyce is now retired and I'm pulling the plug in December.

Our immediate future at that point will include actually spending time enjoying Alaska in it's best months, without the time constraint of employment.

Winters will see us traveling to include Ecuador (very inexpensive) and even taking the "White Whale" (our truck camper) down the AlCan Highway and revisiting all the spots in the lower 48 where we once worked (14 different States) and friends we've kept in our hearts.

Cliff notes - our other hobby will be living!!

Begining to transition from yearly Africa trips to bird hunting in South America.

I still have the need to be outdoors with a gun, but in my quiet moments when I am honest with myself, I believe I've shot just about enough large mammals. I may be through with that type of hunting very soon.

Yet I still love to shoot birds in large numbers. Hypocritical? Probably.

Shotgun sports, steel challenge pistol shooting and golf round out the rest of my interests. I play golf 3 to 4 tiems a week, and take at least one golf vacation a year.

Love to bowhunt here in Montana.

Also rifle hunt after bow season and bird hunt as well. Pheasants being my favorite for sure.

Also do a lot of fishing, both ice and open water. Like bill-fishing when I get the chance.

Softball, basketball and backpacking for exercise.

Never been much of a golfer as I figure my other hobbies take away enough time with the family if they aren't along.

Also spend as much time with my kids as I can, they grow up way too fast.

Hunting has never been a hobby to me. It's more of a philosophical or even religious pursuit.

As I have completed my bucket list of everywhere I wanted to go and everything I wanted to hunt, I am now not so desperate in my pursuit of hunting. I'm now more focused on the solitude of hunting alone or with a good dog.
By eliminating the social, family aspect I am finding my hunting to be more rewarding now than it ever was. I believe I will continue hunting until my health or my government fails me.

Triathlon. Training for races takes up all of my free time. I especially like the bike leg of the sport. Owning and riding a nice bikes is almost as enjoyable as owning and shooting nice rifles.

Three weeks ago I placed in my age group in a race. I am 60 and there were only 16 competitors male and female included 60 or over out of a field of 600.

If for some reason there was no more guns or hunting I would go back to land based shark fishing. Nothing including elephant hunting has gotten my adrenalin pumping like land based shark fishing.

Awesome!! I hear you on the nice bike thing. Carbon Bikes and DR's...sweet.

I just did a bike event that had me training 15-25 hours a week for 18 months. Total commitment from the entire family for this stuff. People don't realize that without family support, training for events can cause real hardships, hard feelings.

The amount of fishermen really doesn't surprise me. I would have figured there would be more guys into classics and hot rods.

Matt, if you want to flyfish for bones, the northern end of New Caledonia is a lot closer, offers miles of undisturbed flats, and essentially is host to only 1 small lodge catering to fisherman. i spent a week in the area a few years ago after a rusa stag hunt. drove north from Nuomea in a rental car, then just poked around the north sound/lagoon fishing and diving. the fishing area is huge with little to no fishing pressure. helps to speak French, though...

One point someone else brought up, hunting never has been a "Hobby" to me, it is part of me and has been as far back as I can remember.

I have always been attracted to the natural world. Hunting and fishing have merely been aspects of that attraction.
