After reading the "DGX Experience" thread begun by Antlers, I am re-thinking my first choice ammo.

What would be your first choice in factory ammo for a .375 H&H going to Africa hunting for plains game and Buffalo?

I've used the Federal premium with the 300 gr TSX and the 300 gr TBBC with good results. I liked the TSX load a little better as it shot better in my rifle. The TB solids seemed to print within 1" or so of the softs, so I felt it was good to go.

The Remington Safari line with A frames is good as well, but I have not used it over there.

Around here, expect to pay about $80/box from retailers.

I would answer your question but as you know, my .375 has RUM after it....

Federal premium is good stuff. Winchester is supposed to make a safari grade ammo using nosler-partitions and nosler brass-solids but whenever I go to the Buda, Texas Cabella's all I see is Hornady, Federal and some Remington in the bigbore safari grade stuff.

I used Remington Premier 375 H&H ammo shooting 300g Swift A-Frames on my recent brown bear hunt. This 300g A-Frame broke the right front shoulder of my brown bear at 13 yards, tore up both lungs and ended up in the far hide just ahead of his left rear leg. I took it home and weighed it, it weighs 299.5 grains.

I used the new Barnes Vor-tx safari ammo (300 gr Tsx & solids) in Zim this August. Great ammo, great performance.

What does Barnes claim as velocity on their Vortex Ammo? I was told 2520 but the data isnt on the site and I haven;t seen a box in real life yet.

Me, too. Done two trips with this round and they are extremely accurate in my Model 70 and very effective on buffalo and other game.

My chrono reflects what you've been told, just over 2500 fps.

Premium bullets north forks softs and cuppoints or solids, TSX will penetrate a bufs head.

I used 300 grain TSX for plains game & shot # 1 on Buffalo. For follow up shots on Buffalo I had solids but did not need them. Both shoot to same point of aim. I doubt you could find better in my opinion.

........And me four! That stuff shoots very well in all three of my 375 H&H bolt rifles, and the bullets work perfect on buffalo, or caribou, or moose, or wildebeast of zebra od eland, or just about anything else other than elephant! Sounds like good ammo doesn't it?

Swift a frame or barnes x are great choices. The barnes arent for all barrels as some will not shoot them.

Fail safe by Nosler was another great bullet but you had to cut a small cannuler in them for crimping or they wouldnt hold.

X2, Their products (Superior and NF) have gone with me to Africa twice.

My first safari I used Speer for my 375H&H and was completely satisfied with it. It also came in very neat little 5 round boxes that were perfect for the shirt pocket. Only time I have ever carried factory ammo to Africa. Every round since was my own handload.

Another vote for trophy bonded bear claws and sledgehammers. They worked well for me.

If you came to South Africa you can buy PMP African elite, they are loaded with Swift A frames.

I think if any factory load with the following bullets shoot well in your rifle that you'll have no worries.

Trophy Bonded Bear Claw
Swift A-Frame
Barnes TSX

In custom ammo you might also consider the North Fork.

I've used all the above with good results. These days if I had to pick one it would be the TSX for everything except elephant.

I loaded my own but Federal Vita Shock 300 gr. TSX is the factory load I based my work up on. It performed very well on PG and Buffalo. On the Buffalo it was one shot through the top of the heart and the bullet was under the skin on the opposite side.

ANYTHING but Hornady's DGX. I had horrible results with that bullet on a buffalo in a 458 Lott. Bullets sheared off to the cannelure or just started to mushroom and the mushroon sheared off. Stick with a Barnes TSX, a Swift A Frame or a Trophy bonded bullet. I have a bunch of them and they are going to be just practice rounds.

Remington with 300grn Swift A Frame without a doubt.
It will do everything from Buff to Leopard.

Used Federal 300 grain TSX ammunition in my 375 H&H to shoot a cape buffalo and reedbuck in Mozambique this year. Reedbuck was pretty much a bang-flop ordeal, the buffalo fell at the shot and never did regain his feet. He did require a few follow up shots to finish him, but, again, never got up from the initial shot.

I used 300 grain DGS for duiker and followup on the buffalo. I was pleased with the results and would certainly use the TSX and DGS combo again.

The recommendations for TSX loaded by Federal is to be expected and I need to see if my particular rifle is "Barnes-friendly".

The number of people recommending Remington is a big surprise to me. I guess I am (was) prejudiced against them just thinking of the cheap green boxes in the hardware store.

It is very telling (to me anyway) that absolutely no one came to the defense of Hornady's DGX bullets.

And for Tom in Tennessee....Trophy-Wife is very well, thank you. Also, she keeps great track our credit cards such as giving the digits to Wayne at AHR just yesterday

I haven't bought any factory ammo in a long time so I'm not sure who loads what anymore. But from the comments here, I think you've been given good advice.

I prefer the TSX but I think the A-Frames and TBBC will give you excellent results as well.

Concerning the "Barnes friendly" issue, I haven't seen a rifle that won't shoot them exceptionally well if the barrel is clean of copper fouling. The TSX's copper is a bit soft and tends to foul quicker if the barrel is not clean. Once clean, I don't find the TSX to copper foul any faster than other bullets.

Not to hijack the thread but cleaning the barrel of copper doesn't mean running a swab with Hoppes down the tube and cleaning it out. That won't do it. At the range on our hunting ranch a few days ago, a buddy of mine was having trouble getting his bullets to group. Woodlieghs in his custom 416 Rigby. Looking at the barrel, it was full of copper. It took 6 hours of repeated cleaning to finally get it clean. After that, it shot MOA. I think copper fouling is "unfriendly" to any bullet make!

A box of Hornady DGX is about $50, and a box of Federal TSX is $70 in 375 H&H. A $20 difference is fairly insignificant on a hunt that costs $10,000.

At nearly $100 a box in Canada, the Remington Premier ammo with Swift A Frames is anything but cheap!

Thank you Todd for your insight. I agree copper fouling is an entirely different beast and will keep that in mind.

Sevens...true the $20 is insignificant and I never consider lower cost as a criteria for choosing the best factory ammo. My point was pointing out that no one suggested I stick with Hornady and expect great performance.

You're right, Wooly! It ain't cheap and my prejudice was only based on Core-Lokt® past experience. Probably I should have just said "old green boxes". The Remington ammo is definitely gonna get a go.
