Marius, with the outside chance that Africa is running the same as the US, for every case that is diagnosed, there are 9 cases where the individuals experienced no side effects, and did not think anything was out of the ordinary. Again this was found through mass testing.

Also, on the recoveries, the countries numbers are difficult to find. This is not openly reported, as individuals could test positive for months after exposure. Plus the fact that a person can test negative and then positive over and over. So a person could become infected numerous times, this is a proven fact.

With countries not testing or selective testing or only testing on some days, again the test kits are in short order and South Africa appears to have the best handle on this. A few countries have not tested in July. I am not counting Tanzania who quite testing months ago.

Life is too short, so how are you and your family doing these day. I hear the flu is running around your area also. So stay healthy and safe.

I think more deaths are occurring because people are not getting treated.

I believe there are more deaths because they are not being reported as CV-19 deaths. No one is testing the dead for cause of death.

Actually the other way around. We have had Cape Town doctors state that people have died from severe head trauma in a motor vehicle accident. Just because the victim was Covid positive, it gets recorded as a Covid Death. You can probably find it if you search for it.

South Africa usually has about 60 deaths a day from gun shots.

The deaths from gun shots has dropped to 20 a day since the COVID-19 lock down started.

I am sure that deaths are not being reported correctly in all nations, not just South Africa.

Many countries had fewer traffic related deaths. Not because they were attributed to Covid, but there were just fewer people on the road, so fewer accidents.
Some countries had fewer gang related deaths, others more. Not because they were attributed to covid, but just because there were fewer people on the streets so less shooting (in SA). In Mexico it seems to have gone the other way around, more violence and more deaths.

I wouldn’t put much value in comparing the cases per country. South Africa has tested 30 people per 1000 vs the Nigeria’s 0.5 people per 1000. They’re Africa’s two wealthiest nations. I wonder how much testing and recording is going on in the poorer countries.

Isn't that the truth. With all the govt bail outs with no tax income it's a scary situation over there!

They will certainly find the true value of tourist dollars if the shutdown continues.

South Africa, which had one of the strictest lockdowns in the world but started easing it under economic pressure, has also seen confirmed cases double over the past two weeks, with extreme inequality exacerbating the outbreak.

In Johannesburg, oxygen concentrators, which help people with Covid-19 breathe, are hard to find as private businesses and individuals are buying them up, AP reported.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s struggling public hospitals are short on medical oxygen and are seeing a higher proportion of deaths than in private ones, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases said.

In South Africa, which accounts for more than 40 percent of all the reported coronavirus cases in Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday that the country would reimpose a ban on alcohol sales to reduce the volume of people needing emergency treatment so hospitals have more beds to treat COVID-19 patients.

South Africa is also reinstating a nighttime curfew to reduce traffic accidents and has made it mandatory for all residents to wear face masks in public.

"We are taking these measures fully aware that they impose unwelcome restrictions on people's lives. They are, however, necessary to see us through the peak of the disease," Ramaphosa said in a letter to the nation on Monday.

"There is no way that we can avoid the coronavirus storm. But we can limit the damage that it can cause to our lives."

If you require hospitalization in Africa, you are pretty well screwed. While there are a handful of hospitals in Southern Africa with a tolerable standard of care, most are abysmal.

Andrew there may be, it is interesting that there is no testing or reporting of new cases for Zambia for the past week.

I got info out of Zim today. If one compares it to the prior report, it isn't good especially considering that virtually all are local transmissions.

The field hospital will send 30 of its life-saving oxygen concentrating machines to other parts of the country where they are desperately needed, an aid worker, Sean Christie, said. Where they will go is still to be decided.

“The storm of the virus is expected to hit Gauteng, which has 25% of South Africa's people, many in densely populated areas,” Bandile Masuku, the province's top health official, said Thursday.

“We expect the pandemic to grow here in Gauteng, increasing pressure and stress on our health system, from the end of July, perhaps reaching a peak from mid-August to September,” he said on a webinar by a local news site, the Daily Maverick.

With the USA at 3 million, which is only 1% of the population, this thing could take 5 years to burn out. I am beginning to think no hunting in 2021 either. Perhaps the best strategy is to open everything up, let the fittest survive, and get it over with.

South Africa Data May Underreport Virus Deaths, Experts Say

By Pauline Bax and Antony Sguazzin, July 18, 2020, 4:00 AM EDT

The official number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in South Africa doesn’t reflect the true scale of the crisis, with provinces that have been hit hardest by the outbreak showing a surge in fatalities, health experts say.

The country recorded 10,994 excess deaths between May 6 and July 6, according to the South African Medical Research Council, which publishes weekly figures. The provinces with some of the highest confirmed infection rates -- Gauteng and the Eastern Cape -- are experiencing a particularly sharp increase. Compared with the predicted number of natural deaths from historical data in the week ending July 3, the Eastern Cape had 90% more and Gauteng 71% more, the latest report showed.

Tracking excess mortality is widely seen as way to gauge the full scale of fatalities from Covid-19. It includes those suspected of having the coronavirus who died without having been tested, as well as people who died of other causes after being unable to seek treatment because hospitals were swamped. Neither of those categories would be reflected in the official pandemic tally.

“Particularly in the Eastern Cape, we are getting a significant underreporting of mortality in villages and smaller towns,” said Ian Sanne, head of Right to Care, a non-profit organization that provides treatment to people with HIV and associated diseases. “The risk is that we are missing quite a bit.”

South Africa’s outbreak ranks as the world’s seventh-worst, with 324,221 confirmed cases. The government adopted a mass-testing regime weeks after the first infection was identified and has tested more than 2.3 million people, a response that sets it apart from all other African nations. Authorities have said they’re confident they’re grasping the true scale of the epidemic and release detailed Covid-19 reports daily.

Yet hospitals say they’re buckling under the strain, and the closure of Home Affairs offices during the first stage of a lockdown has led to administrative backlogs and unregistered deaths. South Africa also has the world’s largest HIV epidemic and a high prevalence of diabetes and tuberculosis, which are major causes of death.

Even though the Health Ministry added more than 100,000 confirmed cases in little more than a week this month, the Covid-19 mortality rate is relatively low. As of Thursday, there were 4,669 deaths in South Africa attributed to the virus, far fewer than the 37,574 deaths in Mexico, which has roughly the same number of infections.

“I’m sure there is some underreporting of the deaths,” said Richard Lessells, an infectious disease specialist at the Kwazulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, a Durban-based research institute known as Krisp. “The discrepancy between the excess deaths and the reported Covid-19 deaths could be explained by this underreporting, or it could be a sign that the epidemic is having a knock-on effect on deaths due to other causes.”

Anban Pillay, a deputy director general in the Department of Health, criticized such assessments.

“We disagree completely with this analysis,” he said. “This is a theoretical argument.”

The World's reaction to the numbers still don't make sense. South Africa was at 350K cases, 150K of those recovered with the rest still active cases, and 4500 deaths. That is a mortality rate of 1.2%
If the media was not reporting on this, would we know that we were in a pandemic?

I am skeptical of the reported number of deaths due to this virus.

It seems to be so widely different from country to country.

I see that the UK is revising this, since they have found that anyone testing positive, and dies of any other cause - car accident - he is reported as dying from the virus!!

Marius.. I liked the reporting one laboratory who only had positive test results, no negative test results. What is the likelihood of every test being performed being positive?

This is my thinking that if you are close to a hospital and die, you become a Covid number regard less if you have the virus or not. The data reporting is not correct, and for the medical and politicians to join together to push a narrative is troubling. I do believe that something else is afoot and going on, and we will learn about it at a later time.

Again my thinking is that the medical community have kept individuals alive just because they can, and this virus is cleaning house. Just look at all those dying who's organs are not usable for transplant. I am sure that surgeons are seeing $$ flying down the drain.

Stay Safe, I was reading about one of Port Elisabeth medical hospital and the report was not good. Again with todays reporting, you do not know if it is true or not. so many made up stories.

Many American hospitals have been butchered financially because of Covid. All businesses have their areas of profit and loss. Many medical services which have traditionally carried hospitals have been put on hold. Likewise, they can't legally turn away indigent patients (including Covid). The gov't is reimbursing hospitals for Covid expenses. Having worked in hospitals my entire career I can assure you that if something can conceivably be coded as Covid-related, it sure as hell will.

7-20.... South Africa the leader in Africa's covid testing.

A country of 200 million has carried out just 212,000 virus tests Updated 6:29 AM EDT July 21, 2020

Nigeria's ruling class have been hit particularly hard by Covid-19 while the government's initially swift response to the pandemic has since been hampered by low testing numbers.

It may sound harsh but I have zero sympathy for hospitals. They billed me $20K PER TREATMENT for Chemo. The drug costs $199 wholesale. The "room" had a chair and a stand for the IV. Well there was a TV. Treatment took about 1 1/2 hours, no doctor, just a nurse who set the thing up and then disconnected it when done. That's it.

Any institution that cannot make a profit with these obscene margins must be so badly run that it must be "re-imagined".

Russ - Quite true. And on top of that many chemo drugs like Carboplatin were developed in the 1980's and cost beans to manufacture today. Before CV-19, I had two friends travel to Brazil for their treatments. Their total out of pocket including living expenses was less than their chemo treatment WITH Obamacare.

The US medical system is collaborating with Big Pharma and the insurance companies to make us pay for everyone else in the world.

That being said, if I acquired CV-19 i would rather be treated here than anywhere else.
