I wanna ask you guys: wich caliber consider you as the most proper caliber for Buffalo and DG? You see I have a Ruger Safari Magnum in 375 H&H Mag wich I load with my own shots, 300 grs Peregrine Bushmaster (VRG 3) Vo are 2550 f/sec and 300 grs Peregrine Solids (VRG 2) I Also is getting a Mauser Oberndorf M98 in 404 Jeffery, also with my owns load 350 grs Peregrine Bushmaster (VRG 3) and also 350 grs Peregrine Solids (VRG 2) load both at 2300 f/sec I know that both are more than enough for killing a buffalo, but it`s also something spesial hunting with two good old classics. Wich one would you take on buff hunt? I shoot good with both. I also can use 400 grs Woodleigh softpoint and solids.. SCI Official measurer.

404 with the woodleighs would be my choice

A 375 will do it, but the 404 gives you an edge.

Pick anyone you like. The buffalo will never know the difference.

375 would probably be easier to find shells should they be lost in transportation.

I have a .404J and really like the calibre. What with ammunition available nowadays the .375 is probably more versatile. I carried the .404J before I acquired my double. ROYAL KAFUE LTD Email - kafueroyal@gmail.com Tel/Whatsapp (00260) 975315144 Instagram - kafueroyal

I would love to see anyone can prove to me that 0.041 of an inch is going to make any difference?

Take the one you shoot most accurately..

The difference is diameter is actually 0.048" but cross-sectional area is about 28% larger in favor of the .404 J (.423-caliber). That should count for something. You are right, but in practice, I am absolutely certain it makes no difference at all. I have seen many animals being shot by all sorts of rifles, ranging to the 577 T.Rex. And have not seen any of them kill any better than the 375.

Practicality tells me the .375. But the side of my brain that causes me to like classic stuff says to go further and do the .404. Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

+1 but perhaps with Woodleigh 450grn bullets if in an area with high population of Ele

The .375 is the best cartridge the Good Lord ever invented. You will always find some in hunting camps should you lose yours; maybe not so with a .404 or others. Yes, you can go higher in caliber but with that philosophy, then why not go up as high as possible? After all, I have shot lots of plains game with my .600 while on buffalo, elephant, or hippo safaris. The .375 will do it all. Maybe not perfectly in every situation, but it WILL do it all. Go with your heart. Take the rifle that you will remember with sentiment & just that little bit of a skip in the heart. I would take a Mauser 98 that I shoot well. I would take the 404J. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Take Both. Shoot the buff with the 404 just because its a classic. Use the 375 on other plains game. Important thing is to have fun, whats the sense in having both if you don't use them? Tim

Whatever makes you happy. Why not take both?

Funny you say that. We hunt with two identical 375 caliber rifles, at least 4 people hunt with these every year, and this has been going on for many years. Our professional hunters hardly ever fire a shot, despite us telling them to shoot whenever they wish. We use magic bullets with special coatings. Kills buffalo even when shot up the rear end.

Now if you had a blaser r-8 you could just add another 458 Lott barrel and be all set Mike

Or even a 500 Jeffery for that matter :-)

Easy choice. One caliber offers +33% greater bullet weight. That caliber also offers a +12.5% greater bullet diameter. The same caliber offers a +15% ballistic coefficient advantage. All for less than a 4% increase in recoil energy. Mike

All the above add one big fat ZERO to killing an animal I have all the calibers up the 700. If for one minute I thought any of them could do better than the 375, I would use them. Bullet placement and the quality of the bullets make all the difference. A marginal shot, regardless of caliber, is not going to do any good. I have seen them all in action. Many people take TAYLOR's knock down as gospel. While in fact it is nothing but a load of bloody rubbish.

We all have our own subjective beliefs, but Mike is 100% correct on the math. Casinos make money b/c they are 100% correct on the math. I'm with Mike and Las Vegas - the 404 wins, especially if you have one available.

There you go Biebs We all know real men only shoot something with a 5 or higher. the 4s are for sissy men. I dont know what my 375 H&H and 375 ruger makes me - but I have finally decided I will spend my life as a mere 375 poodle shooter. Mike

No argument about the maths. But, I have never met a buffalo that could understand maths. The hundreds of buffalo we shot with a 375 never mentioned it. A professional hunter told me the story of a buffalo shot by two hunters from South America. Both were using 458 Winchester magnums, and they proceeded to put 28 shot in him before he died. I have shot buffalo from every imaginable angle in their anatomy - including the tail, and tehn nose. The 375 always did its job. The right type of bullet, in the right place, will always do the job.

I don't have nearly the experience many of you here on AR have. I own rifles in both calibers, and have taken game with both. I am taking my 458 Lott & 375 H&H next year to Zambia. I like the 375. But given the choice of the two mentioned by the OP, I'd take the 404J. Just my personal preference, nothing more.
|

And that is all it boils down to. Nothing else. Any mention that one is better than the other is just a figment of the imagination.
