Replace Bunny in the above with Charles Askins and you have it nailed. His book, "Unrepentant Sinner" is the worst load of self-agrandizing bullshit I have ever read.

I've also read the Conrad book. The guy had a PH who had a number of shortcomings, the hunt didn't seem to be very good, yet he had the chutzpa (sp?) to write a book about how to plan a safari.

Well, I may just be backwards, but I loved Bunny Allen's book, and Lou Hallimore's "Chui" is one of my all time favorites. I wouldn't part with it for twice what I paid.

You are saying Ruark's works are among the worst? DC300

I found Bunny Allen's book "The Wheel of Life" quite interesting. However his continual comments on his affairs on safari and how it was all OK (to him!) were a bit too much. Personally he would have got an accidental bullet in the back of the head from me. But what goes on during safari is ALL OK! Right?!

The worst book: Bunny Allen "the wheels of life" this post is recurrent, I think I wrote it twice on AR & twice on Nitrox's forum. As a guy : I hate the depicted personnality n of the square-headed MEINERTZHAGEN in the book of P H Capstick " Warior". It's good to be frank. I am not sure what the worst safari book is, because I would not waste my money on buying it or reading it.

I liked Meinertzhagen as Capstick described him. Would be interested in seeing a good biography on him though. Dean ...I say that hunters go into Paradise when they die, and live in this world more joyfully than any other men. -Edward, Duke of York

I have several hundred books on Hunting, mostly Africa. Some of them go back 150 years ago, and I think I must have read 90% of them. Ruark's, on the other hand, I found very difficult to get int and finish. His books did not appeal to me as huntging books at all. As some of my friends have mentioned, this might have been due to his imbibing a bit.

Ruark knew how to tell a good story without the exaggeration and melodrama of others I could mention. But still, he wrote with great style and wit. He will always be one of my favorites. You guys really need to lighten up. Maybe you should take a drink or two once in a while. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

I just got home and noticed Conrad's book. Man, that was bad. Most of what he shot is dinky - I about pissed my pants when he pointed out that an immature kudu (picture of 25 inch bull maybe) was no comparison to the "trophy" - which I wouldn't shoot on the last day.

Well, in a spirit of helping people understand poor litrature I am prepared to make two of my "classics" available. Killers in Africa by A. Lake and The truth about hunting in todays Africa and How to go on Safari for $695 by Jaques Herter.

I've read and re-read nearly all of Hemingway's work, and True at First Light is awful. As a safari book it must be even worse. No doubt about it, Ruark was a severe alcoholic who drank himself to death before he was 50. Saeed, I can see how Something of Value or Uhuru might be a bit much, but I think Ruark's short stories are pretty good. Have you tried Robert Ruark's Africa or Horn of the Hunter? I agree that the Conrad book on planning a safari is the worst that I have read so far. A complete waste of money written by a one time instant expert. RCG
