Steve, this Golden Goose saying is what describes Africa as whole. I think Africans might have to go through the whole process of recivilization on their own and without a penny from outside of Africa before they will appreciate the whole concept of civilization, conservation, caring about each other and so forth. It took our so called First world hundreds if not thousand years to get here. It's like a business. If Africa wanted to prosper, they would hire good businessmen from Europe, US, Canada, Australia, NZ, India, some of the Arab countries with well run economy to run their country economics and just make sure all citizens had opportunity to better themselves. But I can't for the life of me even imagine African leaders ever doing that, because they are some of the most greedy, despotic, murderous and vindictive people on this earth, who don't care about their own people one iota. Ja. It's typical bloody Africa. The lefty fidiots would have us believe it's all the fault of the white man but at the risk of getting political, not one African country has made a success of independence. A good example would be found by coparing the USA to Liberia. Both have had independence for a similar number of years and both have a variety of natural and human resources etc but whilst one has developed a democratic society, all kinds of industry, including a space industry, good infrastructure and even a massive foreign aid budget etc whilst the other has more or less mastered the wheel and they didn't invent that for themselves. Africa could and should be the most successful continent in the world and instead it's the least successful and the reason for that is the Africans or more accurately, the African leaders. | |||

I quite agree with you Steve! But the question that begs an explanation is: Why? Why would the bounty of Africa be wasted by Africans and their democratically [once?] elected leaders squander the richness as if there is no tomorrow? Some anthropologists have suggested that it is because Africa is so rich and fruitful - in the literal sense full of fruit - that the African never developed a future vision. They hold that the fact that if an African gets hungry, he simply walks from his village and picks some bananas or other and satisfies his hunger. No need to take some fruits home to use if he gets hungry tomorrow. He then simply repeats what he has done today: Take a short walk and pick some fruit. OTOH, the European who did not properly prepare his and his family's food stores for the oncoming winter, was simply eliminated from the human gene pool in that part of the world. The European therefore developed a sense of the future. In modern Africa the modern [democratically elected] leader still lacks a sense of future vision. He is therefore quite prepared to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, simply because he wants a golden egg NOW! No thought of what he will do if he again wants another golden egg the day after tomorrow! I've got no training in anthropology, but methinks that I fully understand this argument! At DSC this year I was chatting with an acquaintance that has been to Africa on business and safari over 20 times, over many years. He said, "better get you hunting in Africa done in the next five years" His opinion is whats happening in Zim is and will happen else where and the USA import bans and the Muslims will put an end to it. Unfortunately, I agree. Africa is headed downhill fast. Another question is in my mind. I wonder if those who have booked hunts are in jeopardy should Mugabe die on or before their safari is competed? What will happen? | |||

I quite agree with you Andrew.You see some of the same in South America - especially in Brazil. Have discussed the topic With many " white " Brazilians and they have concluded With the same. One more issue is that old tribe connection that we have not had in Europe. I think that Africa has to get rid of that tribe thinking to move forward. If they want to move forward ? I heard Namibia is trying some program about land distribution. It's called Land mass distribution and they have 35000 applications as of right now Old pres of Namibia Pohamba doesn't wanna get out of his seat. Here we go again. I don't have the long family connections you have my friend but I do know from bitter experience how hard & painful it is to leave Africa but if it's any consolation, there's light at the end of the tunnel and although it took a while, we've settled in to Portugal very happily indeed and wouldn't choose to go back to living there....... and I'm sure it'll be the same with you.  | |||

There was talking in Namibia while I was there in 2005 about land redistribution. At that time, I believe it was in the way of financial aid from the government to purchase land as it came up for sale. The man I hunted with was the former minister of education for the country, even when "black" rule was instituted. If they can keep China from getting their mitts in the mix, it may help. Africa has such a vast supply of resources, they just don't know how to manage it. As has been pointed out, there is very little thought to sustainability in most African countries, and they do not understand how to invest in infrastructure that will pay dividends later down the road. I purchased raw materials for 15 years and Africa set the pricing on many raw materials and when they had power outages or limited power available, the markets went crazy. They did not necessarily benefit from the higher prices, people just went elsewhere to insure delivery of the material. | |||

I will be going to Zimbabwe on May 23 for sable . Hope things hold together until after my hunt . This trip will be my 8 trip to Zim. Glad I hunted when I did and got my elephant Leopard cape buffalo and hippo. Between the elephant embargo Bobs plan to seize safari areas and the rest of the private white owned farms it does not look good for hunting in Zimbabwe. Sad day no reason for me to go back if this happens. | |||
